👩🏻‍🦰 A B O U T M E:
Ashley has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

How is everyone else’s gardens coming along? It’s been mega slow here in my neck of the woods 🙃. Out of curiosity what video would you like to see next? 1. Four things you need to master for a garden to survive without purchasing a thing? 2. Seeds to start in July? 3. Keeping plants watered on vacation? 4. Common Gardening misconceptions. What is actually possible. 5. Your suggestion! If you like someone’s suggestion feel free to like it!

I have a raised bed garden in front yard for my dog to serve as a fence. Its either fence that I cant benefit from or raised bed that i can benefit from and i chose the latter one. My cool plants are thriving but my summer plants are not happy😢😢😢. Cold and raining here in Calgary.

@@91210paige I put soya meal from the Co-op on my turf, it is cattle feed, 35% protein, as fertilizer it is 7 in nitrogen. It does smell a bit as soon as it starts breaking down but the lawn is Green. Cutting at 100mm and mulching the clippings. Best it has looked in years and 20$ for a 20 kilo sack.

One thing that I have noticed this year, tagging along with dragonflies and damselflies are frogs. As a kid growing up way back in the 70's was the last time I ever saw frogs or garter snakes. But plant wise? Everything here in Winnipeg is getting blown to bits. Daylily can handle the strong gusts but the Asiatic and Oriental Lily just snap off in the wind. That and the blasted rabbits they are so bold now they come right up on the deck and jump into the container to eat lilies. One thing that worked for me to control the Scarab Lily Beetle is compost. They seemed to thrive in soil that is struggling/depleted. A top dressing of good compost has enough "good bugs" in it to take care of those "squishy" babies that cover themselves in their poop. Keep smiling

I don't think anyone, who has never gone through these kind of situations in their own family really realizes how hard these kinds of situations are; and especially with regard to anniversaries. Right now I'm thinking of all the thousands of parents and siblings of young people who have been lost to fentanyl overdose in B.C. and indeed this has touched my family as well. Your garden looks amazing! I thought I was the only one who had failed at Zucchini but for you I think there's still time.💚

Juneau, ak here! I think your getting all of our cool weather and rain. Been a great season for growing here, have actually had some sunshine and edging towards just over 70 degree (21 Celsius) days! My ranunculus, borage, cosmos and some others are all just starting to bloom! My peas are just starting to give enough for some light snacking. Did bad at planting the inground garden, so that sucks. My dad passed this spring. So with yah on the giving yourself grace for stuff. Gonna be sowing some stuff soon and just fingers crossed that the season keeps doing well! Good luck with the growing season everyone 😊

Hello fellow Saskatonian! I have an all container garden, so I've been grateful that the rain hasn't drowned out my plants. I've been very fortunate that the only issues I've had so far is my spinach gave me 1 week to harvest after it started growing its true leaves before it bolted, and my basil failed to germinate. Every night the temperature dipped below 6C I wrapped my tomatoes and pepper plant in blankets, and they seem to be doing better for it (or so I tell myself). The gorgeous petunia you show at 5:16 is a Crazytunia Black and White, and I am also obsessed! I discovered them last year and could not wait to get more this year. Mysteriously, they are the only petunias this year that I have purchased that have died on me :( For those who are curious the petunia at 18:04 is an Amazonas Plum Cockatoo (I love and have these as well) I'm sorry you and your husband are going through such an emotionally challenging time. I wish you an abundance of love and support 💜

Every year is EXCITING, FRUSTRATING and OH SO DELICIOUS once things are done. Last year my Squash plants started off with nothing but Male flowers. This year the exact opposite. I was afraid none would be pollinated. BUT today I found a male flower so I'm not sure if I'm going to self pollinate or let the bees work it out.

Zone 3 in Manitoba here ............My garden is up for the most part and doing great , watermelon are struggling but see what July brings ,It's been a wet year here as well , seems every other day we get showers ! Thankfully my soil is a loamy sandy mix and it can pour one day and i can till the next .July is the month when i can say if there will anything on some plants ........Broccoli which i bout starter plants i have had two harvests so far , four to five inch heads and one thing about the rail etc ,.......no bugs to eat or lay eggs on the plants , my Brussel sprouts are reaching up and i can see little buds appearing . I did have a worm ? eating into my squash seeds but i replaced them and they are already getting ready to vein so there will be lots .Zucchini ? I wouldn't give up on not getting any ...............last year i got hail and it looked like a lawnmower had gone over everything ........the zucchini which had no leaves left after the hail came back with a vengeance and as always i ended giving lots away so don;t worry about getting a crop

I am just west of Saskatoon. The peas and cabbage are liking these cooler temps and are doing very well. My corn is “ Knee high by the fourth of July “. I start it indoors and then transplant it outside when safe to do so. It transplants so well but I do start a few extra plants in case I do loose one or two in the process. This is my third year for 36” high raised beds and although they usually seem to be very dry this year everything is doing great. A combination of the warmer soil being up so high and all this moisture seems to be the ticket.

I’m in the PNW and it’s been cold here too. We didn’t have a late freeze, just cold weather and soil. The tomatoes are finally taking off. They sulked in the beds for about a month. The potatoes actually are producing a not too bad harvest and are starting to die back. My okra is 1” tall and I am fighting off snake sized slugs, they managed to eat all the emerging cukes before I caught on and at most of my basil, but I guess that’s farming. I keep looking at the ferns and flowers and keep saying, rain is good for the ferns! I’m hoping that your garden looks up soon!

I'm in southeast NB, zone 5a/b (right on the cusp) - last year was our horrible year for growing. It was either pouring down rain or the temperature was 10* or 35*. It was horrible. This year is doing better - we've had a lot of rain, but like the good amount, and most of the time it's been closer to our normal summer average of 25*, with a few spikes higher (this week the average is 32 I think). I'm actually super surprised by how well everything is growing, and looking forward to harvest time. I expanded this year as well - I live in an apartment so I container garden on my deck, plus I have a larger garden at my best friends house that we both look after, and this year I also put in a new garden at my parents place. I think we may be burdened with abundance in the next month or so.

Wow. You're going through a very difficult time. Take good care of yourself! I appreciate that you still managed to put out a garden tour video. A lot of gardeners I follow are in much warmer climates, so it's nice to see someone's garden that's more like my own! 😄 I think we have been a bit warmer than you (we're in central Manitoba), but have also been dealing with a lot of rain. This year, I tried sowing summer squash directly in pots, and the green zucchini were the only ones to sprout! I've got a yellow zucchini in a planter near some tomatoes. I replanted the others in pots (white scallops and Magda), then when I found I had space in between transplants, I planted those two, plus G-Star patty pans. No germination yet. I had to resow some purple bush beans because only one germinated, and some of the new ones are coming up now. I had almost no purple pole beans in one bed and green pole beans in another germinate. I had seeds for the green ones left, so those got resown. Most of what we have this year, however, are transplants. I had to rework most of our low raised beds, and didn't finish transplanting until near the end of June. I'm glad we've got the raised beds, though, because with all the rain we got, we would have lost everything. I've never seed flooding in that area like that before. But, as you say, it's better than fires!

Every year has different challenges for me here in NS zone 6. My tomatoes (started inside) and beans are going well, plus my summer squash. My carrots, parsnips, and beets are on their way. I had a hard time getting cucumbers to start by direct sowing. My potatoes are fantastic. I have replanted my cuccs 3x this year. Also, in zone 3, Edmonton. So wet and cold! I'm so relieved to hear I'm not just Bad at gardening, and you are struggling as well! And my squashes are all like only 3 leaves! 🍃

Zone 4b. Probably 1/3 the strawberries as last year. They started super strong but the wet/heat/wet/heat we had here conked them out early. Zucchini plants are huge but can't get a cucumber going to save my life. Very slow start, then the ants mow them down. Bush beans are rockin' but pole beans facing what the cukes are.

Your borage and sunflowers are bigger than mine! (zone 5 Montreal). My cucumbers and some flowers seem really slow this year, other things are doing really well (roses and raspberries are loving this year) and some things are pretty normal if not slightly early (nasturtiums, basil and tomatoes). We've had a lot of back and forth with the weather, drought followed by downpours, heat waves followed by pretty cold nights, etc. I also occasionally film my garden and get tons of stares/questions about it, not sure why it's so shocking to people why we might like to photograph our gardens 😅

The heat wave that settled over the Northeast a few weeks back injected a lot of growth in my garden which was lagging behind. Sorry to hear about the challenging conditions. Next video request - Mammal Deterrents? (Rabbits/Groundhogs/Deer)

Zone 3, looks crummy this year. The lettuce and rutabagas (and weeds...) are doing fine, but otherwise it's slow. All the warm weather stuff is stagnant or worse, including those in the greenhouse. The days of labor that went into building planters for the squash and peppers is feeling like a waste of time. Seems like everything needed to be babied WAY more while being hardened off, which is an ask. Lots of wind and cold nights.

I'm in Grande Prairie and i thought it was my new bed I built this year was the reason for seeds not germinating... cucumbers, turnips, pumpkin all did not germinate. I'm gonna start those indoors next year! But potatoes, onion, broccoli and cabbage are huge! The deer are walking into my yard though and eating my stuff and now I really need to figure out a fencing solution. They have also walked all over my onion bed and I'm not sure what to do.. just stand them up and maybe add more dirt? Loved the tour btw and I hope you feel better as time passes.

Just saw the end of your video. That’s a lot of emotion to deal with. We are struggling this summer with a family member who is depressed, which of course is the priority. I find that working in the garden is quite therapeutic for me. Take care and things will get better!

I’m up near PA and am in the same boat. It got down to 5°C only 4 days ago. But the high temps are coming! It sure is muggy. I’ve been saying the same thing, at least there are less fires this year. I will be shocked if I get squash of any variety this year, they are so behind.

Fellow Canadian in Zone 3 here. My vegetable garden is so far behind as well. I don't think I will have any yield at all coz my seedlings took a long time to grow and some died from all the rain and lack of sunlight. Gotta try again next year 😂

I'm on the line between zone 3 and 3b in ON, and it's been a challenging start. I waited 2 wks after May two four to plant out and still lost everything to harsh frost! It even killed the frost tolerant perennials 😢 The only things that are doing well is the garlic, chives, walking onions and potatoes. I've planted my 3rd round of beans and peas since the frost got the 1st round and only 2 beans have come up 😮 I have 1 lonely 1.5' tall pea plant that is starting to bloom though 🤣

I'm in Tacoma WA (zone 8b) and all of my plants are stunted this year. I have been gardening for over a decade and it has never been this bad. I was talking to someone a few days ago that said her neighbor was complaining about the same thing. It's the beginning of July and we still haven't had a solid week of sun. It's been overcast. There was just barely a dusting of snow on one day this last winter so I thought it was going to be a hot summer.

Bad seeds from Amazon? I have read a lot of comments about germination issues and had the same problem myself this year. It made me wonder if something was being done to seeds to bully people who order off Amazon. A bit conspiracy theory but a lot of people really hate Amazon and there isn't really any way to track if everyone is having the same problem unless people take the time to write a bad review.

Same issues here in the Netherlands. We had 4 nice days this summer, and now we are back at unusual cold and wet weather. I had planted 300 flower bulbs and sown thousands of seeds all at the recommended time of the year and I had a handful of blooming flowers that were not even able to stay upright. At the start of the summer we had 4 nice days and just before that I have sown a bunch of wild flower seeds in pots so that I could put them at the most sunny spot in my garden, and that worked, but now we are back in the cold weather so I am not sure if they will get to a stage where they are going to bloom. There is nothing wrong with the seeds. It is just that the weather is too cold, not enough sunshine, and too wet.

@@EmpressKadesh Naw, I'm in the same area. Even seeds I saved from last year didn't do too great. It's just this cold season we've had. We pretty much skipped spring going into summer. Extended warm winter 🤷‍♂

Thanks for the tour. All things considered weather wise, the yard looks quite good. That front plant you were asking about looks like Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare). If I am right, it is extremely invasive. It has been so cold and wet up here (north of you), I never got my main in crop garden in until June 28...tomatoes about a week before that...I am not worried though because I am of the opinion, it will be what it will be. I have planted this late before and have done well. Only difference this year is that my bedding plants are pitiful due to the poor soil I bought this year - a very common theme it seems. Thanks again for the tour. Sorry to hear about all you and your hubby have going on - look after yourselves.

I wish it was a little cooler here in southern Ontario. We had a very wet, hot June (humidex values in the low to mid 40's). Now we're having humidex values in the mid 30's for at least the next 10 days. My regular tomatoes are already 5 feet tall and have fruits on them (but they'll still be a while before ripening.) Peppers are full of fruit and more flowers. I've already picked 5 cukes & more are almost ready to pick. I started everything from seed and they are growing in large pots & planter boxes. (I don't have a lot of growing space.) Rabbits having been eating my flowers in my front garden & squirrels are digging up the plants. It was suggested that I use blood meal around the plants as the animals don't like the scent. I've been trying that for a few weeks now & it seems to be working (as long as I remember to reapply the meal after our frequent rain.) Hopefully your weather will turn around soon & your garden will really take off.

Zone 4 Shelburne, ON. We have a strange mixture of things out of control (tomatoes, raspberries) and things that never got started (carrots). My issue at the moment is with with the squirrels and chipmunks, who have decided to top all my potato plants (or simply dig up the potato I planted). I mostly did planters for everything this year (either pots or raised beds), and now have some unexpectedly empty areas. I would therefore love a video on What can I plant now (direct from seed) that I have a chance of harvesting. Also, any tips on what to do now to prevent tomato blossom end rot. Last year (regardless of how far apart I had the post), I lost most of my tomato plants within two weeks. I had some amazing tomatoes that suddenly became inedible. I remember the shots - I feel for you. Be kind to yourself.
