I love the movie. If I can say one thing, I sincerely hope people come to respect farmers. They work hard for lil profit, but without them we will not survive. Thank you to every farm big or small, I thank you for feeding our bodies and soul.

The farmers get the short end of the stick all the time. Saying working hard is a understatement. The middle man makes the money but don't understand that the farmers get run out of business then they don't have a way to make profit.

It hurt to feel Andy's pain to be with her Grandpa when he passed. Alexa Yeames did an outstanding job portraying the Grand daughter's sadness and then picking herself up and taking control of the farm she and her Grandpa loved so much. I'm now an elder, 73 years old, a Grandpa 9 times over, soon to be a Great Grandpa and this movie hits this old man straight in the heart. I and my 2 siblings (brother and sister) were raised many of you early years by our Grandma and Grandpa (Gramma and Granpa we called them) on a small 80 acre 'C' grade dairy farm in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. We loved them dearly and always remembered them with a smile on our faces. Grandpa on Sundays was the local Church of God minister and Grandma played the piano while leading the little choir. Life was a struggle for them but we didn't know it, they never let on what it was like for them to take care of us while our Mother rambled about somewhere else. We weren't unique, we knew other kids being raised by their Grandparents so didn't know. Our Mother finally got her stuff together and found a really good man to marry and we reunited in our early teens. Grandpa sold his little farm when he no longer could take care of the chores and they moved to the little town of Willow Springs. We did not do a very good job of staying in contact with Grandma and Grandpa only calling them once or twice a year - ohh how I wish we weren't so caught up in our own lives to forget what they did for us, what they suffered to keep us fed and clothed. As they grew old they eventually moved to an assisted living place. Grandpa spent the last 10 or so years not knowing anything due to dementia but Grandma remained sharp to the end. They passed in the mid 90's without any of us knowing. If only we would have payed more attention to their well being. NOW it's my and my Wife's turn to be alone. Young people, if your Grandpa and Grand Mother are still with you, call them, go see them if you can. Let them know you love them. One day when they're gone you will feel good that you kept in touch.

I love this movie. And I am single. My family including my mom made me walk out of the house in the clothes that I was wearing all because I wanted to marry a Christian man and not be forced into a HINDU religious wedding and packed off to the in laws house. I was not in love at that time. Yet, my life is so lonely even now. I am also an epileptic patient from birth. Suffered enough seizures all my life and was molested by my own brother when I was 23 years old. I wished my mom would even look at me. But my family have told me several times that it were better for me to die. I have gone through wilderness and drought. But truly God has been my comforter and strength. I wish some gentleman would marry me and make me feel like family. But at 49 years I am told that will never happen 'coz I am prone to suffer epileptic seizures and no one would want the burden of taking care of me or giving me love. This movie reminds me of family and what it should mean to the next generations.

Oh wow, this goes right to my heart, beautiful. I was the closest to my grandpa! He bought a big farm, I was the only grandkid who accompanied him and enjoyed the country life, I got my engineer degree in agriculture... I remember listening radio on AM running with batteries, in the crountryside of Madagascar, we had candles and chimney for light for supper! He had cancer, the entire family managed to go on a trip back to his farm before he passed away, he took his last breath in my arms his back against my chest. I am so glad the farm is still in the family, and I got an important portion of the farm from my aunt! God bless her she understood how much I am attached to it! taking my husband and my kids over there over the weekend leaving tomorrow early morning and I happen to watch July raising!!! what's the chance of that... I know this story is about a girl struggling with her life but im thinking about the farm. There was a time small family farms like this stretched all across the country and formed the backbone. Things changed, big farming came and wiped out everything because the small farmer couldnt run fast enough to keep up. But this movie doesnt discourage me, it motivates me to divorce our mess, find a little land and make it work, even for my own family.

Some of you may think this is just an American story. It's not this story is the world over. But as Robert Rocca says the day of reckoning is at hand. How this day plays out is unsure but keep your family and friends close your going to need each other in the coming months and years. The status quo / establishment is now just held up with lies and deceit. The working class has been sold out for money, power and prestige the world over.

I don't believe it was so much not being able to keep up as it was the government wanted control. The way to get that was to get the little farmer out so the big corporations could take over. Back in the 70's and 80's farmers took it right up the backside, big promises by the government, only to have them turn it around to force farmers out. Corporations were right there to buy it up. Milk prices are set by the government regardless of what it cost to produce, sure to keep the small farmer poor to eventually sell out. This is just another for the overall plan to rule everyone. Control the food supply you control the people. This has been the part of every socialist takeover. Corporations control the farms, they control the government. They get rich and could care less if you starve. Grow as much food for yourself as you can
@ranter7100

@@jpyagar5390 I Agree with most of that. But "This has been the part of every socialist takeover. " The last thing that is happening is a socialist take over. This is a corporate take over in fact it's done they have takin over. Our neo liberal world is up for sale to the highest bidder Everything is for sale from health care to rain forest the world over. Public controlled enteritis have been sold off to private interests. Not for better service but for profit, not for the profit of the masses but the profit of the few. Our planet itself is now struggling our climate starting it's collapse, which is happening now not in 200 years. We (meaning life on this planet) will not make it to the end of this century. The reason for all of this is money and what it beings to the table. There is a set of physical truths our physical world and indeed universe is build on. These truths some of which can be measured by science will bite us hard by changing our world for profit we are forcing a change in these laws / truths forcing our planet to warm. Just as our physical world relays on truths. We relay on truth. It's becoming hard to find. The lies and deceit around today most of which comes from the establishment is there to protect them it's there to protect their power wealth and prestige. They are stopping needed change for their profit. Either people wake up fast and change the system, to one that helps working class people and the poor and the planet or we are doomed. Corporate power must be removed from govt. It other times and in some country's this connection between govt and business is called fascism. We dont have socialism we have fascism we have an entitled ruling élite. These people are bringing the whole shit box down just to protect themselves their power, wealth and prestige even though this means they will kill themselves and their own family's as everything collapses. Economy means many things but most of all it means their economy not yours. Their world is a death cult. Their economy is a death cult. Our ending is so dark most can even go there. Until we all do nothing will change. Truth does matter what we think say and do matters. Money and all it is beings to the table has no truth. It destroys truth it works against the truths that our physical world relays on and the truths we all relay on. You cant have infinite growth on a finite planet.

Another beautiful movie brought to all of us by MC. I certainly respect farmers. I lived on a small farm community when I was 8 years old in Germany. I made one very good friend in school. Her 2 brothers and sister owned a farm. I learned to help out, and in return they helped my mother out with food from their harvest. I watched a pig being slaughtered. When the pig started screaming so did I, and I took off. But my mom and I got to enjoy some wonderful soup and sausages, all made right there on that farm. After I became 12 my mother and I moved to the city which I learned to love. I went visiting that farm town when I went home. It is no longer a farm town. That was very sad for me. I have many good memories of that small farm village. I actually miss it. And that is 40 and some years later. I can never go back to my homeland. My health wont allow me to travel. I now visit Germany on you tube. Thank you John for another awesome movie. You do show us very good movies.

I feel like the director was leading the audience to think that eventually Andy would accept Ryan's love..... why wasn't she able to try? Was it because she knew deep down they wanted different things? Her best friend and Ryan cheating together - pretty bad betrayal. Horrid. I felt sympathetic to Andy, but she was SO hardened..... maybe things could have worked out better if she knew how to relate to others a LITTLE.....to open up a little. Why could we never find out what happened to her parents? Iironically, just as I was typing this, the best friend says, 'you are incapable of normal social interaction', which one of the truest lines in the film. Still, extremely watchable, even in all of the slow mundane scenes, which is a real feat. This film's ending is somehow much deeper from the extreme lack of a tidy ending, and no farm and no boy.

Agreed, Ryan wasn't as devoted to her as he tried to come across! Clearly! Who the heck does that, even if they're mad?!? Terrible.

If you know anything about farming, she will likely never end up farming because all farmland like this movie’s land is apparently worth more to people as developments than to grow food. One person, unlike one person of fifty years ago, simply cannot afford to go out and buy land beca7se it is so expensive. Only large corporate farms have the money behind them to buy land that will produce crops to make payments on that land. Soon corporate farms will be in the hands of just a few and when they go to sell their corn or apples, they will get what they want for their crop and not whatever the crop price just happens to be when the farm payment is due as it is today.

I thought that this was a well acted, well written, and well directed film. In my area, there were a hundred small to medium family owned farms forty years ago. Now there are less than a dozen. Of those, only a handful are self sufficient. The others are selling insurance or otherwise propping up the farms in order to keep them running. July Rising captures the truth of the family farm and the losing battle faced all across America. It does it through a tremendous character.. Well done.

I agree the first comment is outrageous. But is it right to be getting deeper into debt and delaying the inevitable to continue doing something that matters only to her? In what sense would it matter to anybody else? One can argue that building hundreds of houses would matter to a lot of people, at a time when the cost of production of food was clearly lower elsewhere. I think there might have been a politer way of phrasing it, but considering how rudely she treated everybody else, it would not be surprising if others were a bit rude to her, at least indirectly in the sense of being blunt.

@@resilient3708 I was born in 1948. Until I was late in my teens, credit cards were not available for normal people. I was raised in a generation that said you pay as you go. People often built their homes by themselves over many years. The result of this kind of thinking is that you far more appreciate what you are getting because you are putting in all the effort, all the sacrifice. The main reason people are in debt now is because they lack these concepts….and so their stomachs (their feelings) are never satisfied. It is a shame.

@Hi there You don’t need to think that big. There is a pretty popular video on KZbin about a family in Los Angeles that provides a year’s worth of food for four, plus they sell extra - on a 1/4acre. I do the same here in the High Desert of California. Look into permaculture - you don’t need any equipment at all. All you need is straw (about 18” deep) seeds, and water. If you are dead set on farming traditionally you are sabotaging yourself. I have 5 acres but I only use about a half acre for food production. Espaliering fruit trees for instance, like I do, I have almost 30 trees in a 30x30 area. Espaliered trees will produce prolifically, they are easy to take care of and use less water. Cover crops in the spring/early summer can produce enough beans for two for a year. The nice thing about living in the high desert (3400’) is that I can grow year around. Land and houses are pretty cheap really. You can still get 3 acres and a cabin for less than 90k. We get a fair amount of rain up this high, and snow so rain catchment works well here.

I love this movie, even the title. I was going to write about the thoughts and feelings this movie has stirred inside me. But, for some reason, I started reading the comments posted before beginning. And, now that I have read the other comments posted I no longer feel the need to write about my reaction to, "July Rising," except to express my sincere thanks to the author of the book or screenplay that won the support and contributions of time, money, and talent. To the entire cast, crew, director/s, producer/s etc. involved in the making of this film, I am truly grateful for your individual and collective efforts. I think I will always remember this movie for its understated beauty, power, and questions. Perhaps, it was for these reasons that I felt the necessity to, first, consider the expressed reactions of others. I am glad I did, for in these comments I found a community of like minded people who also touched my heart and drew me in...as if we are one, and in many ways we are learning, suffering, and healing as we walk the paths of life before us. Perhaps, the experience of "July Rising" asks each of us to continue on-- to take what we have been given herein--accept that life will keep delivering the unexpected while, most always, challenging us to rise, to be empowered and committed to meet what lies before us unafraid, thankful, and enlightened.

What's wrong with a woman working a farm? I grew up on a farm from the time I was 5 years of age. Where do people think chickens cattle vegetables and fruits come from? It takes hard work decation love of what you like doing. Yup banks are greedy and so are people. Life goes on. You just have to keep going. Lessons in life are not always pretty and candy coated. You say, "Yup banks are greedy . . ." I think not. Banks are a business just like farming is a business. Banks are obligated to the shareholders to make money, just like farmers are in business to make money. Banks provide a service and are in competition with other financial institutions. If they were greedy they wouldn't have many customers and would lose money and go out of business. Some have, just like poorly run farms. Banks who provide a service at reasonable rates and treat the customers right stay in business, and yes, they make money by serving the community, just like farmers.

I just like what I like. I like movies about good character, honor, teaching about the value of hard work, even tho the ending wasn’t what you’d expect she fought the fight and that’s what you should do. I like little to no profanity tho that’s something I need to work on myself. Anyway, it’s a rainy day off work and I found the right movie for the day. Thx!

The drinking wine was deeper than that. It was her aunt, who kept emphasizing that she was such a child was giving awareness to how hard she pitched n at the restaurant. It was like a step up to her pulling with the team at the kitchen in a tie of need. It was recognition symbolically for her help, offering some thing on an adult level.
