This week we're giving you the Hayden Christensen nightmare that is Jumper. This was the first ep we recorded when piloting the show, so we're still figuring out the structure, and it is as chaotic as ever.

The book is 100,000,000,000% better. Jumping is an allegory for David Rice running away from all of his hard things in his life. His abuse father, his abandonment issued with his mothers, trauma from being sexually assaulted, (yes that happens in the book) and his character arch was coming to terms the fact that he cant jump away from his life. Non of that is properly conveyed in the movie.

My moms cousin wrote the book! Steve! I LOVED it my entire life so when the movie came out our whole family was HYPE but then I walked out. I was SO MAD at the absolute butchering of the book I couldn't bear it. He wrote other books to try to help but the KZbin Red show based off the idea was so much better. I still want the movie redone to actually reflect the book. The only similarities are that he can jump and the river jump to the library.

This is one of those movies where they vaguely took the premise of a book, then completely made up 90% of the rest so it in no way looks like the book. There were no paladins, though there were sketchy men in black type operatives, but he spends a good chunk of the book fighting terrorists to avenge his mother's murder, and you may note that simply doesn't happen in the movie lol

Girls I’m a year late bUT JUMPING=JUNKIE someone commented that it’s a commentary on not being able to escape a shitty family/trauma. I think jumping is like doing hard drugs, I think that’s the metaphor, that’s why the cops are after them and they’re looked down on for jumping. Maybe someone else commented this but either way I had an ahah moment so 😂

As a film school grad I love the nitty gritty details and behind the scenes talk. I’m wondering if it might help newer film buffs enjoy more of you included a primer on some basic concepts? (Like in this episode, mentions of Dutch angles, ADR, etc.) Could be a special episode or a recurring segment. Or a pop-up video style special. Either way, love the show, loved the trip down 2008 memory lane.

Speaking of films where the persecuted characters have mutated abilities or are somewhat superhuman, like "Captain America" & "Jumper"+, may I direct you (and possibly guilty pleasure review/react) to what I feel was a marginally the superior film to "Jumper" that was released around the same time ("Jumper" came out in 2008, the film I'm referring to was a year later in 2009, with "Captain America" releasing 2 years later in 2011). It's a little film called "Push" starring a post "Johnny Storm/Fantastic 4's Human Torch""> & a pre "Steve Rogers/Captain America" Chris Evans, (along with Dakota Fanning# & Camille Belle, and fellow actors who later played live action Marvel characters, Ming Na "SHIELD Agent Melinda 'The Calvary' May" Wen*, Corey "Yellowjacket" Stoll, Djimon "Korath" Hounsou~ & Haruhiko "Yashida" Yamanouchi). Instead of simply Jumpers & The Paladins, the superhuman characters are sought after by an adversarial government contracted corporate group called The Division who have subdivided their target subjects into 9 types of psychic abilities: 1) PUSHERS: Can affect their minds by placing memories, thoughts, and emotions within their target. The more talented the Pusher, the more people they can control at once. It’s considered the most dangerous of all abilities. 2) SHIFTERS: Can affect the physical appearance of an object temporarily, thanks to light manipulation. The illusion will remain for a brief period of time after a Shifter works it; talented Shifters can leave their illusions in place for longer. 3) WATCHERS: Can see hours (and sometimes days) into the future, experiencing both images and sounds of what is going to happen. 4) STITCHES: The equivalent of superhero doctors; they can heal people, but also remove the aftereffects of damaging procedures by actually manipulating and reconstructing cells. 5) MOVERS: Can move objects by altering the gravitational field around them. The more advanced the Mover, the more microscopic the level they can work at, creating fields in the air around them for protection. 6) SHADOWS : Can work their powers on their fellow psychics, shielding objects and people from their sight and senses. Shadows mainly work in opposition to Sniffs. 7) SNIFFS : Can track people and objects with their powers. They mainly work through images, which is a limit to their power because they have to be able to recognize surroundings and landmarks. 8) WIPERS :Trained to erase memory, in both temporary and permanent cases. The more experienced the Wiper, the more certainty of pinpoint accuracy when in memory erasure. 9) BLEEDERS: Bleeders can emit sonic vibrations. These vibrations can actually rupture the blood vessels of their target. Because of their deadly powers, they’re often employed as assassins. Additional notes/connections/info dump: +Jamie Bell, who played Griffin in "Jumper", originated the role of Billy Elliot, which was later brought to the stage and played by a young Tom Holland, who went on to play the MCU's Spiderman ( Stan Lee stated he was his favorite actor to play Peter Parker.) As pointed out, by Zack at 54:25 Goyer also did reinvent the superhero films going dark game 10 years earlier when he wrote the screenplay to 1998's "Blade" with Wesley Snipes. Plus there was supposed to be a sequel where Rachel Bilson's character Millie Hills was supposed to eventually become a jumper herself, though that never came to fruition. >Johnny Storm/Human Torch was also portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, who later appeared in 2018's "Black Panther"as N'Jadaka/Erik Stevens/Killmonger cousin, briefly king of Wakanda & mortal enemy to Chadwick Boseman's Prince/King TChalla/Black Panther. # Fanning, who was in "Push" is tied to Kristen Stewart (who played Christensen's sister in "Jumper") because of their "Twilight" film connection. Fanning played Jane, an evil Volturi vampire who telekinetically could cause massive pain, while Stewart portrayed the series protagonist Bella Swan, who later as a vampire could telepathically & telekinetically form a protective invisible shield around herself & anyone else in proximity near her^^. < Jane has a twin brother Alec portrayed by Cameron Bright, who played another live action Marvel character Jimmy The Leech who could temporarily, as long as it was physical within proximity of himself, nullify other mutant abilities in 2006's "X Men The Last Stand". Unintentionally but oddly enough, there was also another comic character named Jane, published under Marvel's subdivision Icon comics, with similar healing abilities to Wolverine. This Jane goes by Painkiller Jane, while Fanning as Jane in "Twilight" is literally bringing pain, Painbringer Jane if you will. *Wen's character has a long history & was later developed to have an intimate relationship with fellow SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson, who was the tying thread and the reason^ for The Avengers to fully unite in "The Avengers" film MCU series beginning with the 2012 film. ~Korath has appeared in "2014's "Guardians of The Galaxy" & 2019's "Captain Marvel". Hounsou earlier voiced "T'Challa" (a character portrayed by the incredibly gifted and late actor Chadwick Boseman, also favored by Stan Lee in that role & rightly so. Even Hounsou would agree.) in the 2006, 6 episode, animated Black Panther series. Hounsou is one of the few actors who have worked on both Marvel & DC productions (these rarefied few include Ryan Reynolds, Angela Bassett, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Keaton, Halle Berry, Idris Elba, Zachary Levi, Natalie Portman, Josh Brolin, Zoe Saldana, JK SImmons, Michael Fassender, Taika Waititi, Tilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe, Tom Hardy, Ming Na Wen, James Marsden, Ben Affleck, Chris Evans, Chris Pine, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Danny Huston, Clancy Brown, Ciaran Hinds, Joe Manganiello, Brett Cullen, Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje & Brian Tyree Henry), as Papa Midnite in the Keanu Reeves starring 2006 film "Constantine, as Fisherman King Ricou in 2018's DCEU (where Diane Lane, who plays David's Paladin mother from "Jumper" appears in the DCEU universe as Martha Kent, Kal-El/Clark Kent.Superman's adoptive mother) "Aquaman" & as The Wizard Shazam (not to be confused with Billy Batson/Shazam portrayed by Zachary Levi) in 2019's "Shazam!" & 2023's "Shazam!: Fury Of The Gods". ^Okay this is more of aside side note, but no question, don't at me, best reaction to this reason has got to go to Cobie Smulders outtake as SHIELD Agent Maria Hill (and Samuel L.Jackson's Nick Fury's right hand woman) reacting to what Loki did to Coulson in "The Avengers". I feel like if Kelsey was playing HIll (a sharp, matter of fact, undervalued, great at her job bada$$ woman with a wicked sense of humor, gee I wonder if Kelsey can relate) she too would be just as emphatically declaring the same monologue. ^^Fine I'd also recommend a series of recent parodies on the way Kristen Stewart's acting as Bella in the "Twilight" films by actor & comedian Brody Wellmaker (even Jackson Rathbone, who played the Jasper Hale in the "Twilight" films, has been a part of these skits.).^^^ ^^^Alright, rambled on long enough, yup got to hit the 'ol trail now, think I'll take my leave here. Again, please enjoy or at least MST3King/Riff Tracking the hell out of the guilty pleasure that is "Push", which I'm genuinely, wholeheartedly looking forward to seeing all of you & perhaps a special guest or two potentially review.

The book is far better… the movie is great in a way but also so bad. The book is dark but awesome with much better character arcs and more. To sum up the differences I stole part of what I found online mainly because though I’ve got the books it’s been a while since I’ve read them… “Put it this way. Here, in a nutshell, are all the significant similarities between Jumper the book and Jumper the movie: Both feature a protagonist named David Rice, who finds out, as a teenager, that he can teleport. He abandons his alcoholic father, drops out of high school, and moves to New York City, where he books himself into a shitty flophouse, uses his power to teleport into a bank vault, and teleports back out with a whole lot of money. Also, there's a love interest named Millie who doesn't like being lied to. ADVERTISEMENT And that's really about it. Given that, it really isn't necessary to address every plot point from both versions in order to discuss the vast differences between them, so this column will be less spoilery than past editions of Book Vs. Film. Besides, I'd recommend Jumper the book, and I'd rather not give away so much of the story that people don't feel a need to read it. Instead, I mostly want to talk about the differences between the two versions' tones and goals. Turning a quiet, methodical coming-of-age story into a brainless action-adventure film is kind of missing the point, but it's also kind of typical of what happens when Hollywood gets its hands on a good story. Far more disturbing to me is the way Jumper the movie turns a morality tale into an anti-morality tale, and transforms a kid's search for himself into a sociopath's wet-dream justification for any crazy, murderous thing he wants to do.”
