Cool to see more VRF content. We've had a bunch of issues with the gen v units losing compressors. I'd assume most of it was install/commission issues more than anything. We cut one open and the scroll was shattered.

@@JumpermanTech Never messed with the Gen4 units only experience with the 5's. We have had LG tech support out from Korea. Still waiting for the report back from them. Ducted airhandler airflow was never setup properly at this job. However, I feel that's not going to solve all the issues. We put surge/phase imbalance on the units and still loosing them. We never get any codes from unit prior to the CH21 once it shows a CH21 its mechanically failed. Biggest thing to cross off the list first is proper installation and piping along with proper nitro brazing. Obviously it can be hard to view some of the piping once its already installed. Other than that just recording the units and going over the data if you see crazy EEV readings or temps that don't make sense investigate. These units are becoming more common in my area seems like yours the last 20. Finding guys that are knowledgeable on this stuff is hard and the manuals only show you so much.

@@JumpermanTech I would check the level of oil in the compressors coming out. I would also check the clarity of the oil, odor, and test for any acid. Flooded starts are the number one killer of compressors. Sounds like you have had multiple compressor failures on some of the units. I would check for proper installation or design problems, or possibly power problems at the site. I wish you luck. Are the compressors out of warranty now? Do you think the inverters are killing the compressors, or do the inverters fail due to grounded compressors? I don’t know much about these systems, but do know a lot about the cause of compressor failures. Those roasted compressor jackets look like their getting hot. Is this a common problem with other buildings? I use AEMC hand crank meggohmeters. I’ve got three. You can’t find them reasonable on eBay. They are industrial quality. Been using them for 25 years. They are analog, and don’t use a battery. Test voltages can be set for 250, 500, or 1000 volts. Also has a built in voltage tester. I don’t like ohmmeters that use 9 volt batteries. I usually test with twice the motor voltage. It will also read high, if there is any moisture or contamination in the system.

I work with VRV mainly. We have issues with compressors just like any VRF. Most of these issues stem from bleed by on indoor eev's. We've seen proper maintenance through the year greatly reduce bleeding by. With older models such as the lll's, we saw that autocharging prematurely set charges wrong. By doing routine maintenance on outdoor main eev's, you can see that they crack over time. Changing these out are very beneficial to said compressors. We've also had bad luck in past years with aluminum(rough lock) installs. With aluminum, leaks are almost always a certainty. Keep up the good work brother, love the channel.
@HVAC544 Жыл бұрын
Is that just indoor unit eev's or even the ones in the heat recovery boxes? One of our compressors the scroll shattered almost like it slugged liquid. Was told the unit should catch it before that happens however in theory is not always the results in field.
@samuelsteffan6987 Жыл бұрын
@asdasda z we've had eevs in the bs boxes flood. But, I believe that's more of a rarity. It does happen, but is rare. We've seen more and more indoor cassette eevs and outdoor eevs bleed.

Liquid refrigerant migration can cause compressor to short out. Maybe even temporarily. That’s why compressors insulation resistance requirement are usually lower than other motors. It is usually important for the freezers and coolers - but you are still in a cold weather, you should check crank case heater, whether it’s even installed, and whether it’s still good. And if it’s bad - why board didn’t produce the fault code and didn’t shut down the machine. And if the compressor didn’t have heater installed from the beginning - someone who ordered this equipment did screwed up.

The converter board is nothing more than a glorified bridge rectifier 3ph to DC board with a bank of capacitors to smooth the DC right out, also those two black square things I imagine are contactors - when you first apply power these should remain open while the capacitors are charged, slowly by some resistors, then after a few seconds, the contactors close to put the rectifier directly on line - without this, the inrush current to charge the capacitors would pop the breaker. If the breaker pops immediately on power up - check for welded /failed contactors on this board. Also the brown deposits on the boards look like flux from having things like the IGBT module replaced, I think you said these are refurbished but approved boards?

You are so lucky you get all the interesting jobs with burnt out compressors on LG units. In the last decade, I have never had an LG unit compressor failure. I must be doing something wrong.. You should never use the Subco magger resistor Ohm tester on these inverter compressor’s . They will test out BAD often when they are not..
