I had extreme pain in my Patellar tendon area of both knees whenever I did something that would stretch the tendon from aged 15 to 18. I played basketball and volleyball. Bad enough pain that I had to take 4 ibuprofen before every sports practice or game just to be able to function. Two visits to a doctor and they never gave me a diagnosis of anything, however. They just told me to "strengthen my legs". However, at the time it hurt way too much and I was scares to lift and put my legs under more of a load. I then went to a chiropractor (yeah yeah, make fun of chiropractors), and in the imaging they took of my knees, they pointed out the apparent damage of that tendon area. Through working with them, it was discovered that my hips were rotated a certain way that kinked the chain of energy up through my knees. My feet had always been at a 90 degree angle of one another my whole life when I walked, stood, or ran, but I never thought anything of it. The rotation of my legs literally caused exactly what you described in the video with the lateral shifting of the tendon when I bent my legs. For about a year I went every two weeks to keep adjusting my hips as they literally straightened out when adjusted, but in a few days got crooked again. Over time, I had to go less and less frequently, and my hips stayed in line. At that point my pain was almost gone, and any lingering pain went away once I got serious in the gym and strengthened my legs after all. So that's my story. Maybe the doc helped, maybe the chiropractor helped. I dont care
@blackout24305 жыл бұрын
A lot of chiros are quacks but if you find a good one you’re lucky. Mine fixed my hips and my back pain went away for good. People also sleep funny (and also have bad posture like you explained) and getting your hips adjusted clears up most common problems

Dude hearing your story, I have a feeling that your a point guard who moves side to side alot or you got flat fee? When you crossover attention to your knees, u can see that it's bending outwards. Or if your a dunker do u land on the heels? If yes to these then you have to relearn all those movements again that puts less stress and prevent knees bending. If your a dunker try to land on your toes instead of heels

I have jumpers knee. I hurt my knee last August in basketball, and it's now July. It's extremely painful when going down slopes and stairs. I can't even bend down on my knees without excruciating pain. I can't run or jump. You literally feel like an 80 year old man. I recently started focusing on quad exercises to increase quad strength, as well as taking naproxen. I also take a collagen supplements, as well as l glutamine, protein shakes and fish oil. I've noticed a huge improvement. Hopefully I'll be back to dunking soon.

Great video! I was a catcher in baseball and goalie in hockey. I’ve had issues with this for 10+ years. Started with a 8 month rehab and was back. Fast forward several years the pain got severe again. I ended up getting injections that didn’t help, in fact one knee got worse and ended up requiring surgery. What I’ve noticed is that the post surgery rehab is brutal. Definitely going to show this video to people asking what’s wrong with my knees.

Now I know I need to lower slowly and perhaps assist myself back up. I have quadriceps tendonopathy, but I can run full speed sprints with no pain. If I try to squat, the top of my kneecap kills! I had the same issue from my 4th year of college basketball, where I landed wrong after a lazy layup and my left knee started hurting. It never healed throughout the next two years while i continued to play, I'd use knee support, which would prevent the pain while playing but without it i was practically immobile. Cut to almost 1.5 years of not playing basketball through the pandemic, now when i go play basketball, I'm completely healed and i also continue the rehad to strengthen my hip flexures and abductor movements which caused the issue back then. So long break and rest is clearly the one of the ways to let the knee heal, so if you get an opportunity like that be sure to take it and make the most of it.

Thus far I’ve only applied the PRICE technique in terms of rehab. Anyway this vid was very informative learning about the q angle an the fact that weak quads could be a contributor was eye opening. I will also be resting rather then pushing thru the pain for now on. Appreciate it!

If you have jumper's knee, make sure you really take time to understand how bad it is with your doctor. I think most stuff online always concludes to "How to recover from patella tendonitis" but that purely depends on how badly you damaged your tendon. I had jumpers knee for almost 3-4 years and even the pain did go away. In those 4 years, I didn't play any basketball as much or as frequently as I did before the injury (including dunking, etc...). However, 7 weeks ago, I decided while playing basketball, "You know what, let me try to dunk the basketball again" and lo and behold, my tendon ruptured 😩 I'm even typing this in bed with a knee brace right now lol. I was super confused as to how or why it happened, but after some weeks after the surgery, it all started to make sense. I never really took the time(having ultrasounds from the doctor etc...) to understand how badly my tendonitis was. If you have jumper's knee, I do wish you a speedy recovery but please, please nag your doctor for as much info on how bad your tendonitis is. I'm glad I ruptured my tendon at 30, imagine it ruptured at 50(in terms of how long it would have taken to heal).

Hi Doc, thanks for the video, unfortunaly I can really relate to this, I was diagnosed with this (i didnt know it was called "jumpers knee") and I havent played basketball for 6 months and I have been doing physiotheraoy. Interestingly, I havent done the exercise you mentioned, I have just done exercises to overall streghten the VMO, to get the kneecap back to place. I also found that a patellar tendon strap really helps out a lot during sports activity ( I still play from time to time). Again, thanks so much for the information (not only from this video), keeo up the good work! You really helped me out (and possibly many others) young players, that want to make it to professional, but at the level I am currently at I dont have an exclusive sports doctor. So, once again thank you so much! P.s: could you make a video about ligament avulsion ( i had an ankle sprain in which this happened)

Something that helped me get rid of or at least being able to keep the "jumpers knee" in control is using IMS (Intra muscular stimuli) needles for my tractors. The physio for my team gives me this on a regular basis like every third week depending on how much weightlifting and jumping I have been doing. Is this something that is commonly used for treating this condition? I'm also working on making the VMO muscle stronger + the glutes in general to ease the load from the patella joint. Thank you for the instructive video!

Very interested in jumping patterns when it comes to knee issues. I've noticed in some NBA players (KD, Reggie Miller) that their shooting motion brings their knees together. I was always curious if that leads to certain tendon strain vs a Klay Thompson style of (proper motion) knees aligned with hips or slightly outside. Which quad muscles put differing strain on certain tendons.

We call that turning in knee valgus, and this won't affect tendons, but ligaments around the knee.

@@Anon.G Over the long run is there any evidence of a difference in long term sustainability with that motion v having the joints line up? BTW I discovered your channel recently and I'm very inspired to change fields to help people like you are already doing. Much love!

Can you do a Part II elaborating on efficient landing biomechanics versus potential dysfunctional landing patterns? Thanks!!

I'll put it on the list! Didn't think people would be that interested in that part haha
@peterf.2295 жыл бұрын
@@BrianSuttererMD actually I think that might be interesting. I also wonder about those people who jump , land wrong and get an ACL tear, a few years ago there were a lot of injuries for NFL players in training camp jumping to catch passes, I forget all the players now but a few of them were fairly big names that were lost.

I’m 21 I had this since I was 19. It truly never goes away if you keep playing on it. I fucked up my life and feel like committing suicide sometimes. It’s really depressing bc I was a high lvl soccer player now I can’t play. All my friends always ask me “you’re always injured”. I foam roll, stretch, stregthen most days. My sports days are behind me. Pls don’t be like me don’t play through injuries. Rehab it ASAP or you’ll lose your ability to play forever. This is the most brutal injuries most people don’t know about when it’s chronic. :(

Michael Aguilar, have you looked into your feet and ankles as being the weak link, I'm currently focusing on that and my knee problems are fading away
@Philomath-23 жыл бұрын
Of course I don't know you but I can relate to the pain and frustration, I went from squatting 500 to not being able to stand up without help, journey started with strengthening hips glutes snd hamstrings but never address the foundation the feet and ankles. Might seem obvious but it all starts with your feet and works its way up the chain

*FOR ANYBODY WHO HAS THIS TYPE OF INJURY* Imma be real, ive been suffering from a knee injury for years. I injured my knee while hiking and me being an ignorant teenager i didnt goto the hospital and walked it off. It didnt hurt alot, just was weak and uncomfortable. Years later i got it checked out (MRI and a visit to the doctor) they said i needed to rest and made me wear a knee brace that blocks the movement completely. I wore it for a month, it was painful and annoying, it just made it worse i lost all my muscles in my left leg and it felt crazy weak. Because of that i relied on my right leg to do the left legs work. Now guess what i have pain in both my knees, NEVER TAKE WHAT ANY DOCTOR TELLS YOU AS FACTS, GET 2ND OPINION OR DO INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH. Now my patella injury is chronic and it aint gonna heal without a surgery, this has seriously hurt my passion for sports. Dont be me and GET A 2ND OPINION AND DO RESEARCH BY YOURSELF. Physical symptoms would include Protruding Patella Tendon Pain and discomfort regurally Swelling Any stress causes pain Shoes with bad cushioning cause pain Cold temperatures cause pain Weakness and lack of explosiveness Side effect this chronic injury were MCL tear (Minor) Right knee problems (Left knee is the one i injured originally) Tendon tear, above the patella (I dont remember the exact name)

MRI even shows nothing but still extreme pain when I try to play soccer and can feel it at times when going up and down stairs or even standing up sometimes.

Can you please give more guidance on some more ways ( or exercises ) that can help with the pain?
@Tiger24kicks5 жыл бұрын
You should do a video of exercises for people recovering from patellar tendon surgery. I have not fully recovered and can't jump or move side to side and can't run.

Do Hudson-Odoi next! He ruptured his Achilles tendon. How does that affect him in future, especially for someone that's a speedster? Love your vids! Not a med student but super informative! :)

Yep, landers knee is more appropriate. I have gotten this recently from playing talble tennis and its only in my left knee because thats where I put a landing motion from my right forehand stroke by pushing my weight (jumping) off from the right leg to catch my weight on the left leg.

My knees (patellar tendons) have been killing for about a year now. I went heavy on them with a few days of long snowboarding in the park and on moguls and they just haven’t healed.
