The biggest tip I ever received was to sit trot up to the jump, if I'm posting already I will sit 2-3 trot strides out! You'll get the hang of it ❤🎉

I balance by putting my knuckles on his neck to keep the reins free, and anticipate an earlier takeoff with the higher jumps. I lesson on an awesome pony who resembles Tucker. He loves to jump and will take off surprisingly early but once you expect it could happen the knuckles on the neck keeps your balance. Also not getting into two point too early so the pony is free to lift their shoulders and front end to jump. You and Tucker look great!

I have struggled so so much with trot jumps too! Now, since I had to figure it out because I am an equitation rider, I have a step-by-step system to help me. First, I trot forward(but not speeding off because running to jumps messes everything up for me). I count the rhythm of the strides in my head as I trot forward (up on 1, down on 2 when posting). Next, I sit and keep counting. I squeeze with my legs to prepare my horse to jump, but not hard enough for him to run to the jump or jump right when she feels my legs. Then, as soon as I feel my horse pick up her front end to clear the jump, I get into two-point and hold until a stride or two after the jump. A common problem I had and see others have is folding and closing their hip angle way too much over the jump. For jumps under 2 feet, you really just lean maybe 30 degrees forward and stand up more. For jumps between 2 feet and 3 feet, you should be farther forward, around 50-60 degrees. Most of the time 3 feet is the tallest a trot jump is in competition. Hope these tips help! You'll get the hang of it and then it won't feel as hard. 😊

It takes practice, but let the reins be loose and let him find his spacing. I’ve also found that doing a sitting trot or slightly raised trot makes it smoother. Then I’m only focused on looking forward and not distracting the horse with my thoughts about my seat or counting. Once I’m comfortable doing this; then I can try to improve myself and start counting for optimal spacing to jump. Adding the polish as an old instructor used to say to me.

For you I feel like there is a lot of tension and anticipation as you approach the jump. Something I like to do is sing row row row your boat as I approach the jump, and just focus on keeping a good rhythm. You can also two-point for a few strides before the jump so you don’t just keep guessing when to go up, and feel out how he trots over jumps. Then progress to sit trotting before the jump, then try to post before the jump when you feel comfortable.

You could two-point (rise) a few strides before the jump, or sit trot before.

I'm just learning how to jump and haven't cantered any jumps yet because I'm still learning.( I originally learned to ride western, so this is a totally different and wonderful experience! I think jumping might become my new favourite riding discipline! I know Carmella used to foxhunt; I'd love to do that someday! ) So anyways, for trotting jumps, my teacher is teaching me to go up into 2 point as soon as I turn down the side of the arena that faces the jump. ( that way, she says, you don't have to worry about a bunch of things at once while soaring over that jump. All you have to do is let your horse jump, since you're already in 2 point.) I hope this helps you, Carmella! -❤Sadie

On the last stride of the jump sit and ask him to go forward so he does like a mini stride of canter then let him jump it then do three stride of canter after and pull them back to tar and then do that over and over again and that should build up yours and his confidence of jumping fences.

Granted, I'm still relearning how to jump, but what makes me comfortable (especially on lesson horses that I'm still getting to know or who have an especially bouncy gait) is going into two-point two or three strides ahead of the jump. It helps me feel balanced, gives me plenty of time to grab mane which in turn keeps the reins be nice and loose for the horse as we go over the jump, and lets me remain focused on looking ahead and trust that the horse knows what to do even though I don't feel confident in myself. I've also found that practicing on larger horses is easier; my experience is that their gaits are smoother. It could be that Tucker has a slightly bouncy trot that is throwing off the rhythm and count of the jump for you, so it could be valuable to borrow a friend's larger horse for a day or two and see if the experience is different for you. It might show you where you excel at the jump at the trot and what you can transfer over to how you ride Tucker over them. Since it sounds like you primarily canter over jumps, it could also simply be that you're not practiced enough at this speed anymore. Jumping some short bounces might be helpful too. I'm sure you'll figure it out!!

My instructor tells me to squeeze with my legs before I get to the jump and move my hands up the horses' neck and grab mane when the horses' front legs start to come off the ground. If he wants to canter after the jump, let him. I think you need to move your hands forward so he can stretch his neck out.

Can you please make a crash course on English riding? Maybe like go over common terms in English riding, talk about how to sit a half seat over poles? Please? I’m going to summer camp soon and I’ll be riding English for the first time. I’ve been trying to educate myself on everything English related.

@Lexi Lewis #roadto600 There are a few basic things that you've probably heard of, such as the cinch being called a girth and a lope being called a canter. Another is the 2-point, which you might know, but I know nothing about western so I'm including it anyway. Basically, you stand up a little out of the saddle, lean forward, and grab mane to stay balanced over jumps. A half seat is like an in-between of the 2-point and the full seat (how you're normally sitting). You pretty much just tip forward a little in the saddle.

One thing I do is when I jump, I put both my hands on the side of the horses neck as far up as I can reach while in two point during the jump. This allows my horse to stretch his neck out over the jump but then when I sit up again the reins are still as tight as they were before the jump and I can pull my horse back into the trot.

She's the correct size for him. She does not look overly big on Tucker sooooo... And considering that you have a 17hand horse, not really the best. That horse is more likely to throw you over, specially considering you're not big(strong/tall). A horse should be good considering your size. Not a horse too big or too small.
