Heavy arrows make your bow quiet. Unless you get over the speed of sound you're never going to beat them. Quiet kills period! I'm testing some Sirius Apollo arrows in 250 and 300 spines right now. Bare shafts are flying wonky so it's time to get the bow tuned up. It's not the arrows.

He isn’t exposing any lies he’s promoting them. The title of the video is can a fast arrow beat a pig. But they’re shooting slow arrows. Because they’re shooting 550 grain arrows. Teds arrow in the best of all worlds in the most favorable conditions is moving at 234 feet a second. When it’s very easy to have a bow that shoots an arrow at 324 feet a second. 1/3 faster just look at the videos the arrow would already be through the pig before he moves. He’s doing a bait and switch On you.

Jurist not true at all
@_jurist4 жыл бұрын
greg nicholas no it is true. If you need to find out you can look up when Ted bought that bow last year. Then you can put in Ted’s drawl length, which is 28 1/2 inches. And then I gave him the benefit of the doubt saying he’s shooting 70 pounds. It’s only 1 foot a second per pound. And with a 550 pound arrow and the IPO speed of his bowl at best to zero is moving it 234 feet a second. When it’s very easy to have a bow that shoots 324 feet a second. And the aero would already be through the pig before the pig had a chance to move. Because it takes .05 seconds for the sound from the shot to make it 60 feet. And when it takes .28 seconds for your arrow to get there. That means .23 seconds the animal has to react. A human being can react in 2/10 of a second. But if your Arrow gets there in .18 seconds then the animal only has a .13 of a second to react from the time he hears the sound to the point of impact. 1/3 faster and looking at the arrows in the video footage they’re showing the arrow is 3/4 of the way to 7/8 of the way to the pig before the pig moves. And with the fast arrow it already been through the pig. So he’s playing a bait and switch, because he wants to prove his conclusion that he’s already set his mind on. The point being they’re not using fast arrows.
@tompeplinski4 жыл бұрын
@@_jurist you are correct. I don't know about the bait and switch but showing video of a slow arrow to prove the point that you can't beat a deer is not a good test. Even a slow arrow at very close distances will beat a deer and they can't drop. The faster the arrow the farther you can be from a deer before they can react. Simple science and physics. But if your whole youtube channel is based on promoting heavy arrows, then you prove your point by showing heavy arrows not beating a deer. Then all the viewers who want to also believe that heavy is better jump on the band wagon.
@timothylove88394 жыл бұрын
@@_jurist That's a very fast bowl he has then.... But in all seriousness I believe you are missing the big picture of what hes trying to say. I believe he means that a fast arrow might get there sooner but it wont penetrate far enough to actually kill it, while a heavy arrow may get there .18 seconds slower it will drive its way through whatever is in its way (being that it has the right broad head for the job)

Glad to see you guys talking about this. I did research with Dr. Grant Woods and actually created a device to simulate drop. Speed is important for range. The rule of thumb I found is your bows speed in FPS/10 = max range. This will get you in the range of 3-4" of drop from the animal which I consider acceptable. We had a 430 fps crossbow that was able to hit a water filled balloon at 40 yards that was simulating a deer dropping while aiming at the middle of it. I'm an engineer so probably in the minority but I love to see the lab work as much as the anecdotal (though a large amount of field experience is certainly considered good data). This topic is very interesting.

Ii watched that video. Very cool. My question is do deer move because of bow noise or because of arrow noise. Deer hear all kinds of noises that should make them drop and they don't move. Send that arrow down th we y go. Maybe ranch fairy could test by shooting a way from pigs to see reactions from them. Bow or arrow noise
@wolfpack41284 жыл бұрын
@@troydebruin1651 our theory is the thunk is what causes them to start to drop but the whizzing sound is what causes them to keep dropping (sometimes until their chest nearly hits the ground) and what makes them turn away. I was looking at doing a video with them looking at different fletchings and recording the sounds but it never materialized. The skinnier vanes seemed to produce the least noise. Would be a cool topic for them to cover.

This debate about quiet bows vs fast bows was a big deal 20 years ago. I'm positive that quiet bows (and heavy arrows help quiet bows down) cause animals to jump the string LESS, and less severely, but there is no bow/arrow they can't hear. So, nothing prevents it entirely, not even a heavy arrow out of a super-stable longbow or whatever. And, I'm more and more convinced that the ARROW noise is just as bad as the bow.

Still not going to the 600-700 stuff but i want to try and add the 75 grain inserts plus an inch to my arrows. How Fairy said he doesn’t want to test at range, obviously everyone would agree the movement is only amplified but a point to be made is Momentum and KE. Your buddy the DIY sportsman did a video that proved that a heavier arrow maintained these features down range substantially better then a light arrow so even though you are slower, IF. You wanted to take longer shots you would still have substantially better penetrating power even at range. Something maybe to watch and be able to reference in other videos! Keep it up guys!!

First thing to go are the mechanicals, but I have a shit-ton of 350 spine arrows, with more on the way (bought and paid for before I stumbled across these videos) and no local/Canadian source for these really stiff arrows and inserts. Maintaining the 350s as my arrows, how heavy can I go with a fixed broadhead/insert/extra weight combo on a 30" arrow on a 65-70lb draw weight? Edit to add: Biggest critter I'll be shooting this fall is an Alberta Whitetail. Not super huge, but we have a couple of bucks cruising through our plot of land that are easy 250+lbs. Odds are good I'm not even going to see those, but a smaller buck or a doe are sure things.

Great video, especially interesting to me as I lost a dandy 10 pt last year, 22 yards, calm, standing still. I have had jumpers before, but usually still a good vital hit. This one was so bad he almost laid down on the ground while he spun. I'm shooting 74 lbs, 30" draw and 560 grain 300 spine, and have blown through elk and deer like nothing was even there. The hit on this one was perfect front to back but hit high, went through both shoulder blades I believe, sticking out both sides. I waited overnight and trailed in the morning, 400 yards and never bedded, was back to checking scrapes at the end of the track. I always go for a low shot, and usually even if they jump I'll get something good, that one still haunts me. I think I would have had to shoot for the dirt underneath him to hit the sweet spot, who has the nerve to try that.

Hi one way to get your bow to be quieter is by some yarn to your string. Just go to a craft store buy some yarn and take it and wrap it around two of your fingers around 12 times and and make two cuts that will make equal length of strands. The zip tie the yarn to your string you will be amazed how much quieter it makes your bow specially with your heavy set ups. It will help with the animals jumping the string.

Even with Whitetails they usually move AFTER the arrow hits. When I shot recurves mid 70s thru 1992 I did need to aim bottom low because the whitetails did duck most of the time. So slow - quiet - bows are deadly and have their place. Great shows though Thanks

this video would have very different results if a fast bow with sound suppression was used. Those broad heads are extremely noisy and that arrow is not traveling fast at all. Not busting anyones balls but that bow has one string stop and no sound suppression. (limb silencers, string silencers.) This is the whole reason behind spending money and buying quality products to hunt with. If youre shooting a noisy arrow with fletchings and blades whistling through the air in slow motion out of a noisy bow what do you expect to happen? Its like racing a dirtbike from a pawn shop vs a name brand in the same class... Its the combination of speed, silence and the animal not seeing you release the arrow that keep animals from ducking a string. anyways.. just sitting here in quarantine giving out my 2 cents. This is a very interesting argument. But I feel like it would be a lot more useful with more numbers. Like, how far can a deer drop at 30 yards, vs. various arrow speeds. One of the articles I find interesting on the subject says at 30 yards "Now if you speed up the arrow to 300 fps, the deer will drop roughly 8.8 inches by the time the arrow gets there." Which they say is within the diameter of the vitals, and therefore worth attempting to aim at a spot that will be in the vitals, whether they drop or not. Honestly, I think you might have a more valuable set of data, that effectively shows that if a deer jumps, a fast arrow won't save you. But the lack of numbers makes it less convincing. Edit: The deer numbers you gave us: 0:42 450 grains, 29 yards 5:05 420 grains, 25 yards What were the arrow speeds? What were the draw weights? Some people recommend 350 grain arrows for white tails, to get maximum speed out of your bow. These arrows are 1.29 and 1.20 times that weight. Would an arrow roughly 1.29 or 1.20 times faster have been fast enough, if you aimed at the bottom of the vitals? It seems to me, we're right on the edge.
@TheHuntingPublic3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We don't use numbers because we don't believe one can accurately predict how far the deer will move. Nobody knows the exact point the deer begins to drop on a 30 yard shot. In fact, some of them may drop quickly after the arrow is released, some may not drop until the arrow is almost there. There's no question a faster arrow will get there sooner but our argument is that there is no way to accurately predict how far or how fast a deer will move at the shot. It's possible to do this with a object like a water balloon or weight of some kind. However, every situation when shooting at a deer with bow and arrow is dynamic and changing by the second. Making it impossible to predict.

@@TheHuntingPublic I feel like the answer would come from shooting at some deer right around 30 yards, with 350 grain arrows, and 60 or 70 pound draw weight, and aiming as far down on the vitals as you could reliably hit if they don't jump. And reporting how often that's successful. If that doesn't reliably kill, I think it would authoritatively establish that a fast arrow won't beat a jumping deer at 30 yards. Which I think would be incredibly valuable information.

Hunting feral hogs off a feeder is about the only way you can consistently hunt them and control them to any degree with a bow. They are very smart and learn not to make the same mistake twice. I am always amazed when an animal ducks so quickly when you release an arrow at it. That prey-flight response is instantaneous. I've had whitetail does do it twice on me and my arrow passed right over their back.

Heavy for calibur always hits harder and kills better even if slower speeds. I load my own rifle ammo and always lean heavier on bullet weights. Ive never used the wimpy 100 grain heads with my bow setups and have no plan to ever use them. Currently run 125 cut on contact heads with good success. Will be going even heavier in the future. 150's anyway.

I shot a spotted pig one time, bout 90lbs at 72 yds. I was shooting 450 grains (including broadhead) at 248fps. That hog was broadside facing right. I shot and the hog jumped and spun 180° and i ended up with a perfect double lung shot facing left... after that i never took another shot over 20 yds on a hog.

6mm FMJ with 50 grain brass inserts and 100 grain fixed broadhead for 520 grains, makes for quite a quite setup.

I know you guys are all about heavy set ups. I get to a hair over 77 ftlbs out of a 407g arrow at 292fps. If I remember you all are 700g ish and.... 220 fps? so 75 ftlbs. Is the kinetic energy not what puts them down?

I agree that speed is not the answer. I shot a doe a few years ago at around 30 yards. She spun at the shot and I double lunged her on the OPPOSITE side I was shooting at.

Awesome video guys, I did the math on this and even if someone shoots a speed bow that shoots 330 fps (actual) at 30 yards it takes .28 seconds. Even with a heavy set up that only shoots 200 fps at 15 yards .23 seconds, as you showed in this video they can move a lot in a 1/4 of a second, as you guys said you can't beat them

After watching so many videos and reading so many articles, I have no idea what set up is best. I have seen all kinds of evidence both ways. I think I've decided on a 450-ish gr total weight arrow including a 125gr Grim Reaper Pro Series 1 3/8" cut with 70# bow. No idea if that's a good idea, but it's what I've decided on.

Wish we had pigs around here (they are apparently here but no one I know has seen them). All I get to shoot at is pigeons, gophers, and coyotes.

I agree with some of this as there are times a heavier arrow is needed for more penetration.However , making up for a bad hit is not one of them.If I were hunting bear , elk , or something like that , I would go heavy.Just like you said about the comments.......shot placement is most important.That being said , a faster arrow will usually hit a deer in the vitals more often than a heavier , slower arrow because the time for the deer to react to the shot is less.A miss that is 6" off the mark with a heavy setup may still be in the vitals with a faster , lighter setup.It's true you can't predict what the animal will do , but giving the deer more time to react by using a slower setup just doesn't make sense to me.This is the same dumb theory that some rifle hunters use when hunting deer with overpowered guns thinking they can make up for a bad shot & get the animal anyway.

I watched a friend shoot a mule deer doe at a little over 30 yards. She was nervous. She knew something was not right. By the time the arrow got there she swapped directions. He was shooting 400 grain arrows. He said his old Martin bow was shooting right at 300 fps. We followed her for about a mile and a half before we found her. We were talking about leaving and not pushing her anymore and coming back later when we spotted her. The arrow hit her high and well back and on the opposite side.
