Go read an anatomy book. I'm stunned any of these guys are thinking there is a problem with a double lung chest pass through, even if it doesn't hit the heart . It cuases double.pneumothorax, I cant.imagine they are running far. If you think it will pass through, get slightly bigger blades. Blasting a big hole through ribs isn't a bad thing. Expandable broadheads are for like people who wanna drink soda pop. Its water with fake flavor. Also, when you wanna break bones, you don't want a flimsy mechanism supporting the blades. I don't even know how they.make a long video about this

Great job guys. I have had some issues with the arrow passing through, broadhead going through but full length of arrow not. This had mainly been on two deer that were big bodied deer. One at 27 yards quartering away and the other at 8 yards (1 1/2 body fat on this one) and the point of the broadhead just came out. At that point it's was when I told myself I don't want that to happen anymore. I have been in touch with Troy and he had been a huge help to me to get the arrow flight perfect for broadhead. Keep up the great work guys.

Always good to see you guys and look forward to your videos w/Troy. I have never used mechanicals. Not that I wasn't tempted, but my first few experiences w/them were helping family or buddies track deer and had bad experiences. A couple never opened, one hit a rib and reflected through the guts and one bounced right off the shoulder. All shots under 25 yards. 2 deer we recovered and a couple lost. Meanwhile as I was hunting w/my G5 Montecs, I was sharpening them (cuz an older hunter showed me). I got a pass through on a deer and it went right through a rib. Then I noted the older hunter that showed me how to sharpen broadheads wasn't losing deer and getting mostly pass throughs. As I was looking into coming out west I noted that some western states don't allow mechanicals. So I took that as a hint and stuck w/ fixed blades.

Bow Hunting WI winters can be tough, especially with expandable blades. Years back, a couple of hunting buddies using expandable blades lost nice bucks due to the blades freezing in place and not opening. Condensation, warm to freezing cold, not good on expandables. For that reason, I continue to use fixed blades, 100 grains. Works for me. Thanks for the interesting blog!

I dipped into the mechanical world for a couple years but found myself back to fixed very quickly. Never had a bad experience with mechanicals but am a firm believer in target shooting with the broadheads you will be using which is easier with fixed. The "flies like field points" on the packaging and the mechanical practice tip never made me feel confident. I've been using G5 fixed and love them. Cutting diameter is large and they are incredibly strong and durable. Each to their own but I'm a lifetime fixed hunter now.

Aaron makes an essential point early on - discipline requires experience. The inexperienced has not undergone the difficulties associated with a lack of discipline in shot selection and has the "out of body" experience when facing a high-pressure event. Great point. Also, Aaron's point about discussing topics that tend to cause disagreements among people is important and enlightening. Lastly, Greg still seems upset over losing that particular buck - a sign of deep respect for the animals he hunts and a desire to cleanly kill them. Much respect and admiration.

Mike Guy Its interesting to hear so many people say this. I’ve used mechanicals since the vortex came out over three decades ago. Never had a penetration problem. Always complete pass through, and doing so out west where shots tend to be further. I believe the furthest a deer traveled after the hit was about 25 yards. Usually they pile up after about 12-15 yards.

I haven't started the video yet. But I've tracked alot of deer with my tracking dog for strangers just helping other people. Probably upward of 200 tracks in recent years. My stats I recorded over the years were 90% of unrecovered/wounded deer were mechanical broad heads and 75% were crossbow users. Thought the statistics I found here in Oklahoma deer country might lend a helpful viewpoint. For these reasons I don't use mechanicals. Most of the crossbow problems came from hunters thinking they could shoot 40-50 yards before the deer moved, but in most cases, the deer's reactionary movement before arrow impact caused the bad shots.

@robertwhite3752

Thank you for bringing this up and thanks for that information. People should definitely be listening to you. You bring up a huge point here. I’m a crossbow hunter. Many young crossbow hunters, especially ones new to the game, think that just because the newer crossbows can shoot 400, 450, 500+ fps and can accurately deliver an arrow at 60, 70, 80, 100 yards into a “TARGET” think that those types of shots are okay on an animal, and they are not okay. I’m not saying that there’s never a situation that will arise where you can’t take a deer at 60, 70+ yards successfully with a capable crossbow, but I am saying that those situations are very very rare in all reality. Extremely rare! There’s far too many variables that come in to play when taking shots at those kind of distances on a live animal. Too many! I personally ran into the same young man several times just this last season who had shot three deer, 1 buck and two does in an area I hunt in. None of which he recovered (0). Then come to find out that he had shot the buck at 64 yards and the two does right around 70. The first thing out of his mouth was that his crossbow could shoot 100 yards no problem and he was using Swacker broad-heads because they leave heavy blood trails and do immense damage. That they deploy and open up to a 3” inch cutting diameter into the animal so even if it wasn’t a kill shot he would successfully be able to track the deer to wherever it died. I blame many of the manufactures of these mechanicals as well as many of the crossbow manufacturers for much of this BS. But, just like everything else in this world it’s all about profit and how much of their product they can quickly push out into the market for maximum greenbacks. Much of their marketing is highly irresponsible. Thanks again for your comment.

Wow, a 60+ yard shot is just unthinkable to me. I'm new to crossbow hunting and consider myself to be an ethical hunter. I'm thinking 35 yards max.
@robertwhite3752
@robertwhite3752 8 ай бұрын
@@jrvane11 I have a Ten-Point RS440 Havoc. My arrows chronograph at 456 fps. I took a really nice doe last year at 64 yards. The only reason I took a chance on the shot was because she was bedded down. After that shot, I really kept going over and over in my mind of all the things that could’ve went wrong even with her bedded down at that distance. So I have sworn off anything more than 45. I just won’t take that kind of long shot on a live animal ever again. There’s just far too many variables for something to go wrong. Then you have a severely injured animal that may take days or even weeks to succumb to its injuries, more than likely by way of infection. A very agonizing and slow way to go. Not that I haven’t made bad shots on a deer before because I have, and if you hurt long enough, you eventually will also. But we want to avoid that at all cost. Like you said “ETHICAL!” good luck to you this season.

Ever since expandables came out Ive had my criticism on durability. After 4 or 5 years of hype and seeing ridiculous blood trails I had to try them out. It's like you guys said, they're pretty much one and done. Bent blades, screws falling out, rubberbands getting hung up in my quiver, etc. I shot an 9 pointer that was slightly quartering towards me at 11 yards with one and I went back to my Muzzy fixed blades that night. My arrow went in right behind the scapula, got about 5 inches of penetration, and then fell back out. I'm guessing it was a rib that did me in, but it should've been a single lung/liver shot as I had harvested many deer from identical shot placement previously. Instead my target buck was harvested two properties over two days later and the guy said he didn't even seem effected. Save your money and get a sharp/durable fixed blade broadhead. Happy hunting everyone!! 🦌🦌🦌

I love you guys and agree.....but I've had insane success with the 100gr 2" cut swhacker. Over 13 deer all pass through (70lb bow) 28" dra, tiger arrow weight. It's crazy, most run 25 yds, stop and look around like what happened? Then tip over, very effective, I think with a heavy arrow, and the blade not opening on the entrance makes this possible. With that said I have 2 packs of 175gr tooth of the arrow XL sitting on the shelf begging to be shot! Keep up the great work boys, thank you .

Thanks so much for all the great information, I'm 56 years old and like a lot of others have killed a lot of deer with fixed and mechanical heads. The great thing about good fixed broadheads are they don't fail like a mechanical head does sometime when striking bone and at sharp angles. I switched back to a fixed head a couple of years ago and now shoot the QAD Exodus 125 gr. and I can say that one of my biggest archery bucks I killed with the QAD Exodus made it a whole 28 yards with a complete passthrough with a great blood trail if you actually needed one. The stronger and sharper fixed blade broadheads really do make a difference for me. The QAD Exodus is very sharp and extremely tough and this is what I'll be sticking with as long as I can keep getting them.

Awesome video, facts, real life moments. I started bow hunting in 2000 at 12. These videos hit home for me after going through exactly what you guys did. 40+ harvests on deer and one black bear 125 gr thunderheads+aluminum super slams. Not one wounded animal. Sharp kills and does it very effectively. My question to myself from looking back is why did I switch anything? Carbon and mechanical(3blade rage) was my biggest mistake. Lost 2 does 10 ringed at 15 yds. 3rd doe was at 25 yds 10 ringed went 20 yds painting the landscape red. 33% doesn’t cut it and is unexceptionable. Compromised and went to a 100 gr thunderhead and Easton fmj. I’ve been tweaking and getting back to what I used to shoot. Shoot a gold tip kinetic kaos with a 125 gr slick trick now. Total weight of 650. It’s been doing as good as old days. I think I broke because of my feeling that well this is supposed to be better, unfortunately it wasn’t. I bought some 125 gr iron wills and will be using them this year. Might update to 150 wides. You guys try any of the wides? These videos help me switch to new and better things+ save me money. That deer within 20 yards I wasn't getting a pass through. An it made no sense. I shot deer at 5 steps and it would get stuck in their shoulder. I loved the blood trails, but if it didn't at least poke out the other side the blood was no better then a small fixed blade. Since I switched to a heavier arrow and a good fix blade I was able to smoke my biggest buck to date. Right at 20 yards clean pass though and I had to look in the dirt under the leaves to find it. I've had the same experience with mechanical's. Started off shooting 3 blade muzzy's on an aluminum arrow up until probably 2011 or 12, then switched to light arrows and mechanical's and killed quite a few deer with em but also lost several that were good quality broadside shots, so I switched to hybrids same story shot several found most but lost a couple. The real kicker for me though was when I shot my first really good bow buck he came in directly behind me chasing a doe I had to get stood up and make a 360 degree turn and sit on my gun rest bar of my climber with this buck and doe inside 10 yards! The buck actually caught my movement and we had an intense stare down for what seemed like several minutes while I was shaking uncontrollably, lol...l finally I got turned around and drawn he was quartered away I aimed for the opposite leg and let it fly hit right where I wanted and got what I thought was decent penetration long story short didn't find blood for 80 yards and found the last drop over 3/4 of a mile from the shot looked for 3 days and never found him. So needless to say i started doing research and actually found Dr Ashy's study! I instantly switched to a heavy 500 grain micro diamer arrow and a 175 grain fixed blade and have gotten nothing but pass through s ever since and my recovery rate is perfect to date that being said I try to take ethical shots only and only shoot 30 yards max! but that's just me have plenty of buddies who still shoot mechanical's and we get along just fine they give me crap about my heavy setup and I give them crap about there flappers lmao.

Unfortunately I had to learn all of this on my own when I first started bow hunting, first deer I lost, show placement was great but no penetration, had great blood for about 40 yards then a drop every 10-20 yards and then nothing and I tracked the prints in the dirt for ever and never found it, second one I shot with the same type of broad head, 30-06 blood bath, aimed slightly high sense I was in a tree, arrow deflected off the rib and went up so came out even higher than the entrance even though I had to shoot on a downward angle, luckily it didn’t deflect too much and I was able to recover the buck, however I said right then and there I wasn’t using a mechanical ever again, I figured the first one was a fluke and maybe I hit the shoulder or something but then I got the second one and seen it not only deflected but also closed up on the exit hole, I knew it was just unethical for me to shoot mechanical broadheads and I wanted fixed blades, I can’t afford to go spend it all at once and just jump into a set up like y’all are using but I am using the magnus stingers and have 500grain total weight arrows, when I get better arrows I’ll add inserts and get to that 600 grain, I know ranch fairy absolutely hates carbon express, but I’m using carbon express pile drivers and with the magnus stinger 150 grain they’re flying great so far, I went from getting about 4-5 inches of penetration on my target to shooting through my target and having to dig my arrow out of the dirt behind the target, needless to say I had to get a better target lol and I am very happy with the results so far

Have you picked a single bevel blade yet? I've got some Grizzly stiks that shoot unbelievably well and they're really, really tough. Harder to sharpen because it's high grade tool metal if you get the black ones, but they are horrifying when you get them all the way sharp. They are not cheap but I've got eight and none spin crooked even the 2 practice heads with chips out of them. They don't look that rugged but they are. Don't give them away but they have great sales on their site pretty often. Folks have lots good to say about cutthroats too, but I got some used and they didn't spin as well as the used grizz. Probably not the fault of cutthroat though. The only thing with single bevels if that you're better off going with a decent cheap double bevel like magnus than a cheap single. The thin edge just rolls over like a trained dog if its discount steel. First bad word I've heard about g5s, interesting.

Really great - informative video. Best I've seen in a long time. From years of experience hunting with rifles and bows ... no matter what species of animal you harvest ... you WANT pass through! Case in point: I shoot whitetail deer with a .30-06. I used 180 grain bullets for years but because of shoulder pain a few years back, I dropped down to 150 grain bullets for lighter recoil. I shot 3 bucks broadside with the 150's, and in each case, the bullets expanded before exiting the other side. All three deer were very hard to find because of a minimum amount of blood to follow, OR ... blood trail stopped completely. Shooting 180 grains -- always get passthrough and a GREAT bloodtrail to follow when shooting the deer broadside. (AND a lot less meat destroyed due to bullet expansion inside the deer with the 150 grains). I've never hunted deer with anything but a fixed broadhead, so wouldn't know what a mechanical broadhead might do. The "principal" of a big exit hole sounds HUGELY WISE ... but if the thing isn't allowing pass through, I say it's a DETRIMENT. Again - thanks for your video. I think VERY helpful to bow hunters.

Let me guess, 150 core lokts or power points? Maybe a blue box federal? If you do not understand the physics at play to make a proper bullet selection then that is on you. I can load an 80gr in a 243 and get pass throughs on any shot within 60 degrees of broadside. That's just down to knowing how to select a bullet with proper construction.

One thing I’ve found that massively effects performance with mechanical broadheads is proper arrow tuning. I’ve had great pass through shots with a tuned arrow shooting expandables and horrible penetration when not tuned well. They fly like field tips..You really can’t tell if your not tuned well without looking at flight with a slow mo video or something. I keep broadheads and expandables in my quiver now. Broadheads for ground and pound public land stuff.. and exapandles for small parcel hunting where I’ll wait for perfect placement because I need the deer to die inside the property lines. If I hunted a different state with larger farms and parcels sizes I wouldnt hesitate to completely switch to broadheads. In my opinion it’s so cool having so many to choose from for everyone’s unique hunting situations. Great video guys! Real life footage is the proof 👍🏻

I changed my arrow setup a couple of years ago to the heavier arrow and heavy up front after hitting a doe with a mechanical that should have been a lethal hit. It wasn't and I never found her. I think what happened is when the arrow hit and the blades deployed they hit the shoulder blade and the arrow stood straight up instead of containing through the chest. Shot was taken at 18 yds, slight quarter to from a treestand. After that day I switched to fixed blade broadheads. After watching videos from THP and Ranch Fairy, I went with the Magnus Black Hornet. Since then I have taken 5 deer and watched all but one fall. It was my first mule deer and I messed up the shot. No equipment failure, just operator error. I did get him though. What Zack said about the cross bow broadhead not opening, last season I had a 8 point in front of me and I watched it for 4 an half hours before it came across the feild to me and I took the broad side shot at 45 yards and I had a pass through but I wasn't sure if I actually hit it cuz I didn't hear that smack you hear. It just ran 100mph into the woods 😂 but I was disappointed cuz it was my biggest buck so far with the bow and I thought I messed it up because there was 0 blood like not even hair or anything and I backed out after looking around for my arrow and blood for 45 mins and it was getting dark. So next day I had 2 of my buddy's come out and it ran over 150 yards with a double lung it and my bolt was gone I had another with me and I knew right away when I saw the whole it didn't open it was like you took your 2 fingers and poked a whole straight through it.

I've never had a good feeling about mechanical broadheads. The first time I picked one up a buddy had it felt cheep and flimsy. I shot Wasp back in the day then I switched to Muzzy fixed 3 Blade and I'm still using them 20 years later. It's not broke and I'm not fixing it.

Awesome show fellas! Heavy arrow with fixed broadhead is the way to go for me. 530 grain total arrow weight: 125 grain QAD exodus swept blade with 75 grain brass insert out of a 70 pound bow hits like a train. I got hung up on arrow speed years ago but lost 2 deer and I went heavy.

This video is a year to late. I lost two bucks last year in the beginning of the bow season. ALL I HUNT IS PUBLIC. THESE WERE GIANTS. Smacked one of the shoulder blade blade first night of season, no penatration, and then 2 days later. A different big buck and mechanical didn't open I think, center of body(I was scared to hug the shoulder). Looked all night and next day for both.. both would've been biggest bow bucks of my life. I quit bow hunting for the rest of year and have switched to fixed. PAINFUL LESSON. Learn from them and me.

After reading most of the comments, I’m really interested in what setup everyone is using to not experience complete pass through a with mechanicals. I used to pull 75 pounds, but I’m down to 65 pounds now. But have never had a bad experience with mechanicals. Always complete pass through and always complete devastation. To be honest, I have much better luck with archery than with rifle.

Im wondering myself ! i shoot 315 fps with a 390g arrow and always pass throughs. Did clean a deer with a fixed blade stuck in the shoulder bone. A mechanical would not have passed through either .It all depends your shooting abilities and some luck when bowhunting.

@@bowhunter4893 absolutely I agree! I started going with heavy arrows because I started to hunt hogs alot at night with a red light on my bow and it’s not very often that a perfect angle presents itself when you put the light on them and it’s go time. Once the light hits them Big solitary boars around my are give about 2 seconds before they get spooked and roll out.

Classic case of user error and ignorance and they’d rather blame the broadhead instead of their lack of knowledge about their setup.

Glad to see someone else calling this somewhat nonsense. My experiences are the exact opposite of the message in this video. I have seen 10 ring fixed blade shots with absolutely no blood, 4-8 hrs to find deer. I have seen behind center line shots with a large cut expandable where the deer died in sight. No broadhead is perfect for every situation. I will send my 425-440 grain arrows with a rage trypan on the end at any animal in north america at any resonable shot angle. I have put over 1200 inches of antler(not trying to brag) on the ground in North Dakota in the last ten years of dakota-sas subspecies(giant bodied whitetails) probably 70% of them with rage. I experience all kinds of shots, angles, situations hunting in the open prairie and have made some poor and questionable shots, a couple of which I would not have recovered the deer without a 2.5 inch hole in the deer. We have alot harder time finding my good friends bucks he shoots with montecs, then the deer I shoot with rage and shwackers. I have killed a couple deer with expensive fixed blades that I used for elk hunting that season and watched those deer die as well. I have alot of respect and love the hunting public channel but this was alot of blowing in this video, so I guess this is me blowing back.

Great video and with Troy, the Ranch Ferry along with The Hunting Public team, these guys have a ton of real world experience. For me this season, I"m sticking with my fixed MAGNUS Black Hornets. My RAGE tips will stay in the drawer.
