Sermon Series: “At the Table with Jesus”
Sermon: “Two International Meals”
Scripture: John 4:27-38
Rev. Dr. Peter Moon
In our service, we will hear two stories of Jesus generated after two conversations with smart, witty, and well-informed women. They never get to the meal, but the occasion of food makes profound points. Both stories remind us of the innate spiritual hunger within us, but more importantly to these texts, in those who are not part of the community. The outsiders are hungry for the crumbs under the table (Mark). The foreigners coming to Jesus are the food that drives and satisfies the holy hunger of Jesus himself (John). The disciples are thinking about regular old dinner with Jesus. Jesus is feasting on the picture of the coming harvest of people hungry for him.
