Your methods of getting at the bees without destroying the the house are first rate. I worked in remodeling in my youth and often had the task of fixing what someone else did without a single thought of reversing the process and putting it all back together whole. I find myself thinking right along with you. "Try pulling on it a bit.. No....Maybe a cats paw on the other side?..Yes....Nice..We are going to be able to reuse every nail." Cheers JB!

Pretty calming video from the last one I watched. Good dear gussy , I was a wreck on that one. The bees were so mean. It's still amazes me how pretty and precise the combs are set up. I know this is wayyyy out there, but this is who I am. Have you ever observed when a bee is weak , do they kill it , because it's not doing it's job? They are constantly working , fanning ,or doing something.
@JPthebeeman8 жыл бұрын
+Lynn Etheridge colonies that exhibit good hygienic behavior get rid of weak & inured bees all the time. They usually just grab the injured bee & fly off with it, depositing it away from the hive. Most colonies remove almost all of their drones at some point going into winter. You should see that spectacle Lynn! Being a drone at this time of year really sucks! :-) You wouldn't believe what they do sometimes with undesirable queens & virgin queens routinely kill their sisters by stinging them through their cells. All because they want to be the queen. There's no such thing as insect politics Lynn :-)

+thalx Heck yeah, she's a beast no doubt! Honestly I was gauging how long they'd been there by what the home owner was telling me, figured they had to have a decent idea considering the bees were in the ceiling to the right of the front door. That's why I added "Most likely 2.5-3 months" in the video upon dropping the ceiling. Surely they had to have been there more than a month & a half, but wow, all that new comb is a dead give away!

new subscriber here, also soon to be new bee keeper. Came to your channel via ralph jones III as he mentioned you when putting music in his last video LOL I've been soaking up bee info learning as much as I can before getting started. One thing, your colorado bee vac looks really nice, but the same contraption can be easily constructed. $285 seems kinda steep even with the Vac included. That and you can use either an 8-10 frame size deep (or medium for that matter) as a capture container. I mean build it to suit your hive size/setup. Still it is much easier just to buy the setup good to go. may be worth it from a time/effort perspective. I did like it and was tempted because you never know when and where some free bees will swarm.

A quick couple of questions. Can you tell if your bee hives are about to swarm? Can you get them to go to an open hive, or do you just have to wait till they come out on their own?
@JPthebeeman6 жыл бұрын
Lorrie Ruff when they begin making swarm cells they are about two weeks out from swarming. When you can hear queens “piping” that usually is an indication that the hive has swarmed or very close to doing so. As for getting them to go into a bait hive that’s up to them. Placing several bait hives in the area greatly increases your chance of catching a swarm from the parent colony but there are no guarantees that they will choose to go into one of your bait hives. Again, putting out several bait hives ups the ante.

Watch your vids over here in the UK really enjoyable and informative would love to keep bees but not got the space really We have a guy on our allotment who keeps bees but lost all 4 hives we are not sure if it's due to him selling off all the new queens he got this his first year or the fact that two allotmenters used old diesel oil to kill off a large area of Hungerian Balsm weeds. keep the vid coming Bill
@JPthebeeman8 жыл бұрын
+Billy The Loam Gardener if you have a flat roof you could actually keep them on the roof of your house! That's what they do in New York all the time! Bees will comfortably forage up to 3 miles from the hive so I doubt what was growing in the allotment made much of a difference if anything. Get you some Bill!
@BillsAllotmentDiary8 жыл бұрын

How does the comb support the weight of all those bees and honey without falling down?
@JPthebeeman7 жыл бұрын
sqrqlq honey bees are amazing little engineers! I am not a scientist nor an entomologist so to explain how their comb sections can support what we consider an incredible amount of weight I did a little googling to give you a more scientific explanation: "One such phenomena which mother nature instilled in the bee is the nature to use the least expenditure of energy and materials." "The bees somehow know that the square, the triangle and the hexagon are the only three self-tessellating regular polygons. Of the three, the hexagon has the smallest perimeter for a given area." "So, when bees are constructing hexagonal prism cells in the hive, they use less wax and do less work to enclose the same space than if tessellating space with prisms of square or triangular bases." "The honeycomb walls are made up of cells which are 1/80 of an inch thick, yet can support 30 times their own weight." "A honeycomb of 14.5"x8.8" can hold more than five pounds of honey." That also explains why they are so heavy. The bees are creating hexagonal prisms in three rhombic sections, and the walls of the cell meet at exactly 120 degree angles. What is even more amazing, is the fact that the bees work simultaneously on different sections forming a comb with no visible seams. It is built vertically downward, and the bees use parts of their bodies as measuring instruments. In fact, their heads act as plummets...."

Every show I've watched you don't wear one. ..is there a reason and my other question have you ever dealt with the Africanized bee (killer Bee)? @michaelmcneil41687 жыл бұрын
A brilliant piece of engineering. And so bloody obvious too. Apparently you can use a regular shop machine but you will kill the bees if you don't leave it running all the time they are in it.
@JPthebeeman7 жыл бұрын
Michael McNeil you can use a shop vac or blower motor, etc... to power a bee vac but you cannot vacuum bees right into any ole shop vac's reservoir or you'll kill the bees. A "bee vac" is a specialized piece of equipment that contains a pressure regulator of some sort to control the amount of suction. The catch box reservoir must also have the ability to be ventilated during and after the process. I helped design & test the Colorado Bee Rescue bee vac. Guy Shingleton of Denver, CO puts them together & sells them.
@michaelmcneil41687 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't consider making do but there is a video of the use of a regular industrial vacuum cleaner used for such. If I had room to keep an hive I would certainly get the the proper thing. But I just watch this stuff to relax these days. It is a pleasure to watch lunatic Americans getting stung occasionally. Not too often mind. I don't like to think of any bees dying to make me smile.
@JPthebeeman7 жыл бұрын
Michael McNeil you could perhaps use a modified version of a shop vac, just needs a pressure regulator of some sort. If the bees are not ventilated properly they get stressed, overheat & regurgitate which leads to a high mortality rate. The Colorado Bee vac is very user & bee friendly, makes my life & the bees I remove that much happier! 🐝🐝🐝

Bees swarm and fly al over my garden from the two bee hives next door.l have a young baby an am really scared to take her on the garden.when l say swarm it's almost like a black cloud when they are swarming in the air.help.l am so frightened.

I think you should speak with your neighbor. One thing they could do is put up a tall wooden fence to keep the bees’ flight path high. I’m sure if you go about it in a nice way y’all can come to a happy compromise.

Hi JP!!! Just yesterday in Scottsdale, AZ a big nasty hive of Killer Bees killed 3 dogs from a home, sad. Are there killer bees in your area? Love your videos, Keith
@JPthebeeman8 жыл бұрын
+Groovyman 1968 Its really a shame those doggies were killed by bees. Its happened here as well, usually when they are chained up & can't get away from a defensive colony. Lots of Africanized bees in your state, not so much here, 8 cases validated here throughout the state in the last eleven years.

+JPthebeeman Your lucky, I had a couple of hives get africanized a few years back. Not fun to work with.

HOW MANY HIVES DO U HAVE AND WHAT DO U DO WITH THE EXTRAS U HAVE ? , BRUCE
@JPthebeeman7 жыл бұрын
BRUCE TURNER used to keep em in several bee yards, now down to one main yard where I house a maximum of 55. Lots go to my buddy Schawee who keeps bees on 3,000 acres of swamp land. I also sell Nucs.

WH Y DONT U GE T A TRUCK WITH A BUCKET ON IT ? IT SEAMS U COULD GET A USED ONE TO USE .
@JPthebeeman7 жыл бұрын
BRUCE TURNER I rent tow behind lifts anywhere from 1-5 times a season. If I were to purchase a bucket truck it would just sit there, which is the worst thing for any type of lift. It's best if they're used on a pretty consistent basis or they suffer hydraulic issues.
