Clips of some of the late June Foray's BEST WORK in the Fractured Fairy Tales! (I should really say, RECENTLY "late"June Foray, as she died less than 3 months ago). More than 95% of the time, she was the SOLE female voice in these Jay Ward cartoons! Out of 91 "Fractured Fairy Tales", there were only three, when she was not available, so they used Julie Bennett then. Also, on another Jay Ward cartoon, "Peabody's Improbable History", actress Dorothy Scott filled in, when June wasn't free. Other than that, June did everything for all these cartoons associated with Rocky and Bullwinkle between 1959-1964. She also was the lone female voice actress in Jay Ward's late 60s show, "George of the Jungle" (which included the side shows of "Super Chicken" and "Tom Slick"). I hope you enjoy my tribute! Brian Kistler

Thank you. I definitely agree on all counts! Betty Rubble in the pilot. I have yet to figure out if something went wrong between her and Rankin-Bass which did a lot of holiday cartoons. In Frosty the Snowman, they eventually replaced her voice with somebody else. And other than one other Rankin-Bass holiday cartoon, they seemed to stop using her and got other women instead. Paul Frees, however, was always a big favorite for Rankin-Bass.

Some of them are truly great, but no surprise with 91 of them, some of them are not. A lot of folks talk about how the animation from these early shows was very primitive, and that gives the voice actors a lot of credit, since the animation was not super great. I only saw a few F.F.'s where I thought the animation was sloppy, so I would not agree with that. Long before I was able to buy a DVD with all the F.F.'s----back when I was around 12-14 years old, I tried to tape record all the F.F.'s as I saw them on TV. I never really got all of them. I will say this: without the video, when I would relisten to them on my tape recorder, it was almost like being back in the Golden Age Era of Radio, since I had only the voices to go by, and not the animated images. The irony is that most of these great cartoon voices from the show got their start in Radio.

June, Daws Butler (the voice of "Huckleberry Hound" and many other Hanna-Barbara cartoons) and Peter Leeds were part of the great cast of Stan Freberg's national radio show in 1957. Two classic routines from the show were released as a comedy record and can be found on KZbin - "Saint George And The Dragonet" and "Little Blue Riding Hood".

Daws Butler did a lot of those H-B voices at the same time he was on these Jay Ward cartoons. But my understanding was that because the two sets of cartoons had different sponsors for the commercials, he thought he would get into trouble getting credit for both, so he opted to get no credit for the Fractured Fairy Tales since the lion's share of his work was with H-B. Daws Butler (and also June Foray) also got no credit when they did voices for Warners Brothers Cartoons, because Mel Blanc had a deal with them that he would get exclusive voice credit since he did the majority of the voices most of the time.

There's an extremely rare 1967 screwball comedy called "The Perils Of Pauline", starring Pat Boone & Pam Austin, apparently designed to be a spoof of the Pearl White serials &/or the 1947 "Perils Of Pauline" film starring Betty Hutton. A lot people may or may not know this but June Foreway was the 1st and original voice of Betty Rubble when just before The Flintstones were named originally they were named the Flagstones But apparently the Hannibal bureanimators decided to go with another voice as it turned out it was none other than Bea Benaderet In the forties and early fifties she was a radio voice and also did Animated voice over work with the great Mel Blank in the looney tune cartoon. In the mid to late 50's she guessed stared on the Burns and Allen Show With George Burns and Grace Allen. It was ironically from Mel Blank's suggestion after he grabbed the voice of Barney to make her the voice of Betty. And that's how she got the part she was Betty Rubble for the 1st 4 seasons of the show and left the series after the 4th season. I'm sorry it was entitled Shady Rust not shady rust Anyway Bea died sadly in 1968 from lung cancer. June Did come back to guess voice in an episode from the 3rd season of The Flintstones as a nurse by strange Coincidence it happened to be the episode where Pebbles was born entitled Dress Rehearsal Or The New Arrival. June also guest voice in the funstone movie entitled the man called Flintstone as a phantasymphotel assistant to the villain of the film the green goose voice by her old friend and colleague Paul Frees. June went on to guess star in alot of the sixties adventure Cartoon series such as The Lone Ranger The Impossibles Birdman. But of course as anyone knows her best known voice was on the rocky and bowling coast show between the star of the series RockyThe The Flying Squirrel and played the voice of Natasha Fatale The evil female assistant to Boris Badanoff voiced by Paul.Fress.

Yes. I actually heard about that and I saw a clip from the 1959 pilot The Flagstones on KZbin. Daws Butler was also the voice of Fred in that pilot instead of Alan Reed. I heard they went with Alan instead of Daws because this was an adult cartoon show at the time, and Daws was associated with a lot of their kid shows at the time and sponsors did not want the same voice as that for Fred. I did not know that Mel Blanc had suggested Bea. I was just thinking that because Bea was more famous than June and had also been a nagging wife in Burns and Allen that they felt she would be a cut above June in the cast. My understanding was that for the last 2 years that Bea did Betty, she tried to juggle both the Flintstones and Petty Coat Junction, but then after 2 years she had had enough.

Yes, I remember that episode, which was called "Living Doll." The name of the doll, "Talky (not "Talking," as you said) Tina," was probably a parody of "Chatty Cathy," a real-life talking doll that was popular among little girls in the early to mid-1960s. "Saturday Night Live" also spoofed Chatty Cathy in a comic ad for "CATTY Cathy," a doll that makes sneering and insulting remarks about whoever plays with her, and makes little girls cry. The original commercial for Chatty Cathy was even used in a recent ad for the Geico insurance company, with dubbed voices making it sound like one version of the doll is complaining that her car insurance is "too high," while another version replies that she saved money "by switching to Geico." By the way, the male lead in the "Living Doll" story was Telly Savalas, best known as television's "Kojak."

Thank you so much Brian for this - I was born in 1956 so these wonderful cartoons were a big part of my childhood. I did not always "get" the humor, but I love to re-watch these gems today and have a good laugh or three. Would you do a tribute to the wonderful Edward Everett Horton? My God, what a career he had - from silent films to co-starring with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. (And so much more!) Cheers and thanks!

I'm about three years younger than you. :) I guess I was a baby when the show debuted; I read it was supposed to start September 1959, but it did not actually start until November. I'm glad you liked my selections. That would take some doing to do a tribute to E.E. Horton. I'm not familiar with all his work, although did you see the two or three TV episodes when he guest starred in on Dennis the Menace as Mr. Wilson's uncle? I did see him in movies like Arsenic and Old Lace, Lost Horizon, Pocketful of Miracles, Top Hat (with Astaire and Rogers). His last film, Cold Turkey, in which he played a wheelchair ridden mogul of the tobacco industry was kind of sad, in that he had no lines for his last film, although they showed him a lot in the movie. That was in 1971 and he died before they released the film. I don't thi nk that was the last thing he did however. I think a guest spot on Love American Style and the sitcom The Governor and J.J. were his last jobs.

@@briankistler8349 Thank you so much Brian for the kind reply! I will have to look up the "Dennis the Menace" episodes (hopefully, they are out here on KZbin). You are very spot on regarding many of Mr. Horton's most notable films. I did not know about the film "Cold Turkey" and how he had no spoken lines - Yes, I agree, this is a sad footnote. Edward Everett Horton (1886-1970) had an incredible career which (in films) started in the "silent era" and, along the way, he would rack-up 200 film credited appearances. Of, course, this does not include his countless stage, radio, and television appearances. His narration of the "Fractured Fairy Tales" was my first introduction to him. He spoke in such a clear and concise way that many people thought he was British - of course, he was born in Brooklyn, NY. One last thing - about twenty years ago, I purchased several "Playbills" from a very nice (elderly) collector from New York City. I received several true "gems" which I was thrilled to obtain. My favorite? It's not the most "valuable" (from other items I picked up) in terms of "collectability," but it certainly made my day. It is a Playbill ("Carousel") from 1965 - staged at the newly opened "Lincoln Center" in New York City. Mr.. Horton played the "Starkeeper" (his last stage role) and wrote a very big and clear autograph across the front of the Playbill - others in the cast signed it as well (including Jerry Orbach). Cheers and thanks again!

June Lucille Foray was the woman of a thousand cartoon voices : Rocky in the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, Lucifer from Disney’s Cinderella, Jokey Smurf, Magica De Spell, Cindy Lou Who in The Grinch Stole Christmas, the little old lady who owned Tweety Bird and Sylvester in Looney Tunes, the delightfully evil Witch Hazel in Bugs Bunny, and countless others. Often referred to as the “First Lady of Animated Voicing” or “The Cartoon Queen,” Miss Foray was a trailblazer in her field. She is credited with the establishment of the Annie Awards, honouring excellence in animation. She was also instrumental to the creation of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2002. Her career spanned over seven decades‼️ No wonder she has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame : 7080 Hollywood Boulevard. I think June grew into it as she got older. When she was really old, she told the producers, she could not sing, when they wanted Granny to sing. So they put a headset on her and had someone sing the lines and she imitated them. Eventually they spliced the song all together. After that, they decided, no more singing for June. It was a lot of work to make that happen.

Wikipedia, for one, talks about that. You are right that June did voices on Tom and Jerry, but I think that Mammy 2 shoes was done by Lillian Randolph........I do see, however, after doing some research: June did redub Lillian's voice as Mammy 2 shoes for a few years (and then someone else redubbed June for a few years): the whole reason for that: the original voice was considered racist against African-Americans. @Brian Kistler - Yeah, I think everyone heard the "matched shrewskin" hood, which for me, evoked Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" which I haven't read, and the fact that some nasty women have been called shrews, i still don't know why, and one of my earliest, and unpleasant early 1960's childhood memories consists of overhearing my parents having a serious argument where my father admitted calling my mother's mother a "shrew". IMO the comedic value is multiplied for me because for this unpleasant woman, a "twin shrew" (double shrew) might be appropriate for this character, and I can just picture the FFT writers doubled-over in laughter after they came up with the "TWIN" shrew idea and name for the hat. Then I did get the impression that the writers "Piece de Resistance" of the "lemur-lined" hat, note also their well-used alliteration, was slightly mumbled, and I did not want anyone to miss this gem, so I had to share my translation. And BTW I also thumbed up other people's comments who caught things that I "missed" here, too. Thanks so much for this compilation/distillation it was a great idea and effort.👌

I can't think of too many from her era who were really BIG. As far as TV cartoons go, I believe Jean Vander Pyl (who did Wilma Flintstone) was getting started in TV cartoons right around the same time that June was. And not just on the Flintstones. But Jean had nowhere near the versatility that June had.

Although the shows on which the Fractured Fairy Tales appeared (Rocky and His Friends and Bullwinkle), ran from 1959-1964, the 1960-1961 season was likely when narrator Edward Everett Horton, June Foray, and all the other voice actors recorded their very last fairy tale. Why? For starters, the producers had already started recording and producing back in 1958. So by the time the show premiered, they already had the entire first season in the can. But also, for the 1962-1963 season, someone decided that the Fractured Fairy Tales were the weakest part of the show and unfortunately they replaced this feature with Aesop and Son. The producers were deluged with mail, that year, indicating that the viewers missed the Fractured Fairy Tales. So they brought them back for the last season. Unfortunately, they merely recycled the tales that had already been done. So for 1963-1964, the fairy tales were repeats.

She WAS, very talented. As a kid, these were fun, but not to be taken as facts, in fairytales (it'll mess you up). She kinda reminds me, of a female Mel Blanc 😉!!!

Chuck Jones the director of the Warner Bros said June Foray is not the female male Blanc. Mel Blanc is the male June Foray. 😅 Chuck Jones did a lot for her. He lobbied Hollywood to give her her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame when she was in her early 80s.

And in answer to your question----looks like you edited and deleted part of it, no she only did the female voices. Although sometimes in the Rocky and Bullwinkle show she'd do a male voice: Rocky or a newspaper boy.
