In 1992, EPMD and the Hit Squad were on top of the world. When they broke up, it knocked the wind out of Hip Hop. I was truly concerned for the future of the culture. In that same year Eric B.& Rakim broke up as well. After that Hip Hop’s Golden Era came to an abrupt end. But it wasn’t all bad. It just made room for the mighty Wu-Tang Clan to take over the world the following year.
@lucasm38792 ай бұрын
In ‘93 the raps got harder and more gangsta, but I would still class that year as Golden Age. Erik Sermon was still making very nice tracks when he went solo. Hittin’ Switches for example. Run DMC released Down With The King with Pete Rock, Tribe released Midnight Marauders… For me the Golden Age ended around ‘95 (coincidentally the same year as Yo MTV Raps)
@trueself2472 ай бұрын
@@lucasm3879 you made some good points. However, in 93’ the energy had changed. Hip Hop’s atmosphere was different. That year brought us not only “Enter The Wu-Tang” but also “Enter The Stage” from Black Moon, and “93 til Infinity” from Souls of Mischief. And as much as I hate to admit it, “Doggy Style” from Snoop. These albums spawned a whole new era in Hip Hop. The west coast had the g-funk( which I hated) and the east coast had it’s Renaissance Era.
@lucasm38792 ай бұрын
@@trueself247 Yeah but there was already some of the ‘harder energy’ rap around in the early 90’s like Cypress Hill, NWA, Geto Boys etc. The beats were still funky and hip hop was still very much a ‘street culture’ in ‘93, but that’s when gangsta lyrics really came to the fore. To me, like I already said, it was the emergence of the ‘mafioiso’ style in the mid 90’s, with Jay Z, Big, Tupac at Death Row, Fugees etc which was the real end of the golden age. When it became much more about image, slick big budget videos, rappers wearing suits (although Kane did do that in the early 90’s), and rapping about being rich kingpins. I read Q Tip in an interview say he noticed everything changing around ‘96. For me, the albums you mentioned, like Black Moon, Doggystyle/ The Chronic, Das EFX, even the likes of Onyx are still part of the golden era, but definitely towards the end of it. I would say the start of it was ‘87, so there’s obviously a big difference by ‘93/‘94. I’m picking up that you’re not a fan of West Coast G Funk as well? To me that early sound pioneered by Dre and Warren G was 🔥, but that also only lasted a few years and was also really over by around ‘96.
@trueself2472 ай бұрын
@@lucasm3879 no argument here. I think we are just looking at the same animal from two different angles. I will say this; The Golden era and G funk when compared are like night and day to me. They both have their significance but they have two entirely different energies. However, at the end of the day It’s all subjective. We’re just two guys talking Hip Hop over the internet. Peace
@lucasm38792 ай бұрын
@@trueself247 I get your point, but Cypress Hill and others were rapping about gangbanging and guns in ‘91 before G Funk. Dre dropping The Chronic is when it really came to the fore though. We definitely have common ground in that we agree hip hop was better in the early 90’s! 😁✌️
