The Spellshop is also on my top list. The book design alone is delightful, but it's such a down to earth, quirky, delightful book. Perfect for summer.

I have had The Spellshop on preorder since announced. Why don’t more people talk about how awesome Sarah Beth Durst is?

In a way I agree, Little Thieves can and will stand on its own. But Painted Devils said “hey, we have some plot gaps, let’s fill them and make you cry”. You might have caught on to what Margaret Owen was doing with this one based on where you stopped (I certainly caught on soon) but it was worth the journey. I think it’s supposed to show how lost and confused Vanja is now and that she feels directionless.

When i read Assistant to the villian the fact it was a series wasnt announced so i was thoroughly peeved when i was finished. Plus i wanted another Hench but got that....

Ohhh! Yeah that would be a really annoying ending if you thought it was a standalone. And yeah, def not like Hench

That's super interesting what you said about the narration for The Last Murder at the End of the World because I (soft) DNF'D the audio very early because I thought the narration was making it impossible for me to connect to the book and found it super irritating. I struggle with fantasy/sci-fi on audio anyway because of all the nuance so I'm thinking of getting it physically.

Yeah, I felt the same at the beginning, but it does make sense once you realize who the narrator is!

Do you think the Stuart Turton would work for someone who enjoyed The Spare Man? I read that based on your review and enjoyed it, though maybe not as much as you. But I also did not like Stuart Turton's first book and did not read the second. I am wondering about the third based on your description, and was curious if you thought they had similar vibes to The Spare Man?
@BeautifullyBookishBethany

Good question! The Spare Man is more of a cozy mystery and I wouldn’t call this cozy. It’s more dystopian. In tone it actually reminds me more of The Future by Naomi Novik but less contemporary and more isolated. Hope that helps!

Oh my god i hate when male audiobook narrators do fake falsetto voices to indicate a woman is talking 😩😷😷
