Wondering what varieties of lavender will over winter for you? I’m in western Kansas theoretically a zone six but we have extreme temperature swings throughout the year and dry windy conditions year round, so far no luck finding a variety that will work here.

Do the bees ever bother you when you are harvesting your flowers? I love to grow flowers but I have this irrational fear of bees. I harvest at 6 am when they are still tucked away and when I hear them start buzzing I call it a day. Any tips on how to harvest when the bees are out and about?

I’m a backyard beekeeper, and I think that harvesting when the bees are home and not foraging is prudent. Bees aren’t aggressive, and many native bees don’t sting. But we do have to be careful not to accidentally grab a bee. If you do get stung by a honeybee, it’s worth washing the area, because honeybees emit an alarm pheromone that their sisters can smell. This is why you may have heard stories about someone receiving multiple stings.
