The June sucker is endemic to only Utah Lake. Great work has been done for decades to help this important fish recover. After many years on the Endangered species list, the June sucker was recently downlisted to Threatened status in 2021, one of only five fish species in the US to ever make that recovery. Helping the June sucker helps all the other fish in the lake by improving water quantity, restored and improved habitat and many more benefits.
The June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program isn’t stopping there, though; they are committed to providing restored habitat (think the Provo River Delta Restoration Project) and continuing the recovery efforts until the June sucker is removed completely off the ESA list and more. Russ Franklin shares about the history of the June sucker, recovery efforts and some exciting projects.
