Happy Juneteenth! In this episode we explain the origin of Juneteenth and ask the question: are Black people truly free?
PBS Member Stations rely on viewers like you. To support your local station, go to to.pbs.org/DonateSayItLoud
In this episode we explain the origin of Juneteenth and look at the parallels of Black liberation work around Reconstruction and Black liberation work, today. We will focus on 3 areas of “Fine Print”: Voter Suppression, Mass Incarceration, and Policing with a special highlight on the work of leaders pushing for change in these areas.

I got two things to say: 1) WHOO!! Say It Loud is BACK!! I'm so happy for Season 2! 🥳 2) From a Twitter post: "The humor of America making Juneteenth a national holiday when they're banning people from teaching about it in schools is not lost on me" ~ @MajorPhilebrity
@candacen7779

I mean, but that's on brand for us though. Our nation brags about fighting for freedom for all men, but compromised with the South to maintain slavery during the lead up to the Revolutionary War because they knew they couldn't win the war without them. So it goes, 245 years later, the federal government makes Juneteenth a national holiday, and individual states (mostly in the South) are fighting to keep the truth about it dead and buried.
@permafrost0979
@permafrost0979 3 жыл бұрын
Well "America" is not banning the teaching of history. a Democrat congress made Juneteenth a federal holiday, but it's a few Republican states which have passed anti- "crititical race theory" laws. So, it's not ironic at all, it's unsurprising.

Actually, the enslaved in Galveston knew that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation went into affect in January 1863 but their enslavers ignored the order which granted freedom to those enslaved in the states that were in rebellion or the confederate states. Granger went to Galveston with federal troops and on June 19, 1865 ordered the enslavers to obey the proclamation. The federal government didn't send Granger because of a great concern for Black lives on their part, they went to avoid complicating a difficult political situation between Texas, which at one point was its own republic separate from the US, Mexico and the Confederacy. Juneteenth marks the day that the last of those enslaved in a confederate state/rebellious state were freed. Maryland and Delaware who never joined the confederacy held Black people in bondage until the passage of the 13th amendment in December 1865. In South Carolina Freedom Day is celebrated to commemorate the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth has become a celebration all of those occasions. Say it Loud! Happy Juneteenth!

From a Texan who has always celebrated Juneteeth you have stated facts, the only thing I am scared of is other people who are uniformed about our holiday & who don't respect it because they don't have the full education, although people have celebrated outside of the state I have found the true history they don't know. We have celebrated by ourselves for a long time so to see people disrespect it is hurtful especially to all our elders who have fought for years for it to finally happen. If you live outside of Texas please research JUNETEETH so y'all can see why it's so important to Texans. Does any other state have any important info y'all can teach me about emancipation in your state, we need to know all of this to realize the importance. This goes with unity.

@@ebonywinters7658 Yes Ebony! I have Texas family and South Carolina family. In the South Carolina we celebrated Freedom Day also called Watch Night which marked the Emancipation Proclamation going into effect on January 1, 1863, freeing the enslaved in SC and other states that were in rebellion (the Confederate traitors to the U.S.) The enslaved gathered in churches and Praise Houses throughout the Carolina low country to witness the coming of the new year - 1863 - and their freedom from enslavement. They ate Hoppin' John, cornbread and greens. The peas in the Hoppin' John symbolic of coins, the cornbread gold and the greens paper money.

Then why can’t they make it a holiday in December instead of June? It doesn’t make sense to celebrate Juneteenth when over 200,000 slaves still existed after June until December of the same year. Juneteenth is for Texan black folks- not for ADOS at all. Like I said, it makes more sense to make it a national holiday in December.
@theblackestbeauty
@theblackestbeauty 3 жыл бұрын
@@k.d3983 I agree. I am Texan. I’ve celebrated Juneteenth my entire life. It’s always been a Texas thing. We need a holiday that celebrates the end of all slavery in America, not a symbolic gesture. If reconstruction ended slavery in the territories, then the end of reconstruction should be the day we all celebrate. Matter of fact, we don’t need a federal holiday. Run us our reparations.
