Laws are intended to maintain order and promote justice, but what happens when those laws promote and spread discrimination and bigotry? Today Danielle analyzes the discriminatory history US law, tracing its origins in colonialism and chattel slavery up through the Jim Crow era and today's mass incarceration.

Origin of Everything is a show about the undertold histories and cultural dialogues that make up our collective story. From the food we eat, to the trivia and fun facts we can’t seem to get out of our heads, to the social issues we can’t stop debating, everything around us has a history. Origin of Everything is here to explore it all. We like to think that no topic is too small or too challenging to get started.

There's a great book related to this subject called "Native America: Discovered and Conquered" by Elizabeth Furse and Robert Miller. It dives deep into how racial discrimination was "cooked into" the government from the very beginning, and how those laws are still on the books and still animate government's actions today.

This is the kind of stuff that should be taught in schools. Also I wonder how much better we would be today if after slavery ended had we continued down the path of reconstruction. Had Jim Crow never happened I believe our country would be in a better place without those policies I think the wealth gaps between black and white would be less. M Soda I’m happy for anyone who has put in the work and earned themselves a fortune, regardless of color. I grew up in rural Appalachia, and while I was very fortunate to not have to worry about my next meal, I went to school with a lot of kids who did. I witnessed a lot of families living in extreme poverty, and they were all white. I’m not trying to take away from any of the discrimination or trials that black people have and still do experience, but I am saying that I witnessed firsthand that being white does not guarantee you anything.

7:55 - You neglected to mention that the percentage of imprisoned Black people skyrocketed from 2% to 74% immediately when the new system of 'convict leasing' was signed into law. Also many of the prisoners died while imprisoned, so much so that it exceeded the rate of deaths during legalized human slavery. Others were permanently disfigured by the shackles and chains that were intentionally tied to them in a way so they could not walk normally. They were kept bound by them day in and day out, and the metal cut into their skin and flesh, causing infections and permanent disfigurement.

I hope your day improves from here, I’m not particularly open to getting into an argument with a stranger on the Internet first thing in my morning who appears to have led with telling me that there’s no point in me trying to convince anyone I know how deeply rooted structural racism is in the US, because they won’t listen. I debate with and attempt to convince who I can, and I tend to not remain friends with people who adamantly refuse to believe it is a thing because I’m not comfortable maintaining friendships with people who have such fundamentally different moral frameworks and ethics as I do

I've spent years educating myself on the two original sins that made this country possible: theft of "uninhabited" land from the people who were living here and centuries of free labor from enslaved Africans. Of couse, foundational social structures built in the 1600s did not disappear; they grew into our social structures today. You said so much in less than 15 minutes. Your tone was perfect. A penal colony or exile colony is a settlement used to exile prisoners and separate them from the general population by placing them in a remote location, often an island or distant colonial territory. Although the term can be used to refer to a correctional facility located in a remote location it is more commonly used to refer to communities of prisoners overseen by wardens or governors having absolute authority.

Kkk is led by Democrat party
@matthewbittenbender9191
@matthewbittenbender9191 3 жыл бұрын
@@williamhendrix2053you should probably watch less FOX and read more. KKK was founded by ex-confederate officers. Many were Southern Democrats. But the parties today are not the same as they were 160 years ago. After the 1948 election when Truman was elected the Dems started to embrace civil rights and re-integrate the armed forces and government. They were segregated by Wilson in 1914 who was also a Southern Democrat. But those politicians left for the GOP in the 50s because they were wealthy and the party catered to businesses. The GOP has grown more conservative ever since. The Democrats then embraced the working class and minorities. The parties then were nothing like they were today and neither could be considered considered entirely conservative or liberal. And liberal originally was an economic term from Britain used to describe liberal laws for businesses which centrist Dems (neo-liberals) still adhere to. Thinking Democrats today are the same slave owning secessionists today is like thinking Antifa stormed the Capitol.

Biden is old enough to where he voted against blacks and whites going to school together and that was way after the time you're talking and I remember in the 70s and 80s kkk walking down downtown in white grabs with Democrat signs saying sponsored by the Democrat party ... you need to wake up only they bring up race and it's to attack not defend that's why I left the party to independent like most eventually do

Thank you so much for this video, and other relating race history/issues. I'm from middle-eastern Europe and here we never learned ANYTHING about racism or that slavery was even a thing. Most people here don't care about the n-word meaning and just say it because it's in their fav rap songs.. Although, with the internet and videos like these, it's so easy to educate ourselves, there is no longer an excuse. Well, maybe there's a language barrier, but nowadays everyone is being taught English in school! But I wish all of your videos would be captioned, not only because of people with hearing impairment, but also to people who aren't as fluid in the language and can't keep up with speaking speed/accents. :)
