What does “human dignity” mean to siren eun young jung?
Taking the politics of gender as her primary motif, siren eun young jung creates video performance works based on her own intensive research. In the Dongducheon Project, she revealed the lives of female sex workers living near an American military base in Korea, whose taboo stories have never been told or documented. The artist has also dealt with “yeoseong gukgeuk,” a unique type of Korean theater featuring only women performers, which became quite popular in the 1950s before disappearing from memory starting in the late 1960s. Relying on the truth and authenticity associated with archiving, she presents her own deferred and unstipulated archives, which raise compelling questions about who writes history. Through the language of art, siren eun young jung forces us to confront those who have been forgotten by a society defined by political and gender ideology.
