I just start to learn Tarot, it is so interesting to hear that you put Anima/ Animus, projection, personality, shadows, etc psychology ‘jargon’ into a so vivid explanation. 😄👍 Interesting perspective, connection, and amazing explanation!

Psychology (ie Psyche Logic) in Jung's mind was the science of the soul. In his era we were graduating past occult schools being the keepers of this knowledge and inventing new scientific languages to make it more acceptable. This means that the idea of demon (possession), then became "Mental illness" or neurosis within the new Jargon. Nothing really changed. Good luck on your Tarot Journey! It's a wonderful and rewarding one and stay tuned to this channel for Tarot Tuesdays

Masculine and feminine are qualities and we all have both. It often gets projected in some situations outside ourselves and our concepts of the opposite gender, but it's also about energetic qualities. re: nature and nurture - while it can be argued that two children are born in the same family can be drastically different and we can call it nature (they were born that way), it could also be that the circumstances, energy, elements, emotional climate, etc., at the time of each birth were different and contributed to differences in the environment they first experienced, so IMO nature and nurture can be so deeply rooted and intertwined that they are hard to separate. This was a very interesting video (yes, I found it six years later!)---thank you. Very informative. Thank you.

Insightfully explained; thank you, Mr. Douglas! To me, the true value of Jungian psychology is that it assumes you to be an "integrated self" from the outset, as opposed to inviting you to identify perpetually with base consciousness. I think Jung understood that 'science' is "the fool's microscope", or, "the pubertal analysis of what Philosophy and Religion have known all along". "The present eye praises that which is new though it be only gilded dust, rather than praising the ancient gold that is only dusty" ...Irony too is kin to nature. (if I may paraphrase Shakespeare)

It's interesting that we can pair up the magician and the high priestess, and then the emperor and emperess and have the heirophant stand alone, OR we can have the magician stand alone, then pair up the high priestess and heirophant (pope and papess) and then the emperor and emperess. The two pairs, being four is important since in occult knowledge, 4 represents "worldly" things; 4 cardinal directions, 4 physical elements, etc. it's love and then the chariot that carries us to the upper levels of spirital expansion. It's this lower level, rulled by the soul of appetite, or Eros in Greek, that is concerned with worldly aquisition of power. The two main conduits of temporal power are government and organized religion, hence the 4 cards in the lower 7 card level.

I'm very much appreciative of this kind of thinking, to attach the spiritual to the psychological is - in my opinion - the right direction to go in. I was a little disappointed in your omission of the Black and White Sphinxes in connection to Major Arcana VII and the subsequent analysis of Egypto-Roman iconography that could have entered the dialogue. I'm sure that it was just an innocent oversight but it is these errors that are impede us from widening our viewership because of what seems to be a lack of inclusion and a historical consciousness that Jung and Campbell themselves may have frowned upon. Other than that keep up the great work my brother, I learned a lot from you today and I hope to see more of your contributions in the near future. Thanks Again!

I used to think that the Rider Wait take on the lovers was something ancient and deep. But then I realized that earlier tarot decks had no such symbolism. For instance the marseilles tarot deck, which is quite a bit older than the rider Waite, the man looks at the woman but the woman looks at the ground, while Cupid is above then pointing an arrow at her. I think unfortunately the Rider wait deck just made up their own version to fit their own Golden Dawn ideas. It’s not original. Tarot was pretty much just a rich persons card game until like the 1800’s when all of the occult orders started making their own magical orders that they claimed were ancient hermetic Atlantian Egyptian ideas, but the fact was they made all this shit up. I still have several decks of Tarot and love to give readings, but I’m under no illusion that this is some ancient occult knowledge. Once you start to do real research on Tarot history you find out that It’s all pretty modern.
@ShannonBoschy3 жыл бұрын
there's a funny line of distinction there. I agree with your historical analysis and that there was a lot of confabulation in the occult revival period. Like lots of cults, the secret societies of the 1800s claimed authority from ancient sources (real and imagined perhaps) and so it makes it hard to attribute the cosmological and psychic models. WRT the Lovers card and it's structure, I think the trinity structure can be seen in many traditions as the world above, the world in the middle and the world below. The Hermetic/Alchemical history (predating the renaissance) portrayed and conveyed this structure, giving Mercury/Hermes/Thoth the description as the only diety to be able to transit all three levels. Conscious/Unconscious/Superconscious. What I am getting at here is that I accept that the cards are not magic. In many cases though they act as memory keys and code information that is much older than the cards themselves. Quite True, older cards don't carry some of the nuance of the RWS, and to me this makes the whole history that much more interesting thanks for taking the time to comment and share your perspective!

Thank you for this! I've been looking for a good video on Jung and the tarot for a long time. You put together a really well thought out and fascinating treatise. Personally, I like to be a little more open to interpretation when it comes to card symbolism- I'm working on a deck right now and have come to some interpretations that differ from yours but that doesn't mean that either is better, and I don't believe it's an indication that the artist hasn't studied their tarot :)
@ShannonBoschy6 жыл бұрын
kutesykate I’ve seen some fascinating interpretations in various versions and interpretations of decks and if I was creating my own there are a few things I would incorporate myself. What I know from my esoteric study of the deck is that while in divination there is definitely free-flowing interpretation and intuition that plays into a reading, there are definitely deeper truths that the cards contain from a self-development and Hermetic POV that were encoded deliberately in decks of the occult revival period that have been lost in artistic iterations of the deck. I have definitely seen many heartfelt and well-intended decks that demonstrate the level of understanding of the artist and creator. I can’t imagine the daunting task of creating a deck and catching all of the nuance and depth of the arcana like the RWS.

The hero's journey is built into the fool's journey. The hermit is the contemplating sage, the wheel of fortune is internal change and random chance, the hanging man is struggle, i.e. Odin hanging himself on the tree of Yggdrasil, or the tree of the nine worlds, sacrificing himself to himself to gain the secret knowledge of the runes (so he can (cast) "spells" with the runes), and practice the feminine magical discipline of seidr. He dies in the process (death card) or rather his old self dies away in the transformation, his soul realizes it's trappings and attachments (devil card), breaks the chains that bind him (tower card), emerges again, but confused (star card and moon card), starts to see clearly in his new paradigm (sun card), the sun and moon cards, being the marriage of opposites, give birth to new creation (judgement/resurection card) and then to enlightement/magnum opus/philosopher's stone, (world card) ("spirit of the world" or anima mundi).
@ShannonBoschy6 жыл бұрын
Everyone who reads tarot, reads it as a reflection of their own unconscious, that is, as reflection of their own beliefs and values and their depth of symbolic language and wisdom. Readers get to play ego games too if they want to about what "The correct" interpretations of Tarot are - there's a card for that. There are dozens of significant interpretations of Tarot since the RWS and several different schools of thought in Europe about Tarocchi prior to that, and all of those schools influence adepts today. I would never lay claim to "The Right" interpretation of Tarot. Facts, however, are not debatable. The Hero's Journey is not built on The Fools journey as you say. Joseph Campbell (who coined the phase Hero's Journey) uses the term to describe the global mono-myth - because the story he is describing is the same narrative arc in all cultures through all time on earth and it's about coming of age. Tarot did not come first. Tarot is an example of a story told in the framework of the global mono-myth.

The male (self consciousness) is veiled from the female (subconscious mind) by the clouds. The female (subconscious mind) has direct contact with the Angel (superconsciousness) while the male (self consciousness mind) does not have direct contact with Super Conscious but has to channel the Super Conscious mind through the subconscious mind.

Yes, you are right. The magician in the Marseille deck is a street hustler. The Magician, being the lowest in the progressing trump parade/triumphi, is a practitioner of low magic, or magic for worldly gain and power acquisition rather than for spiritual expansion. (We don't count the fool, who is a game piece, so to speak, not part of the triumphi itself).

If the fool had everything he needs to go over the cliff it would include a parachute no? Maybe it is his innocence and naivety that can save him and that is his parachute. Is the cliff actually representative of death which is inevitable for us all from the day we are conceived? If he steps off that cliff he IS going to crash unless there is a nice deep pond below him and he is a good swimmer and it is a warm day or their are some kind strangers or friends down there who will catch him in a nice soft net. Something like that. Let's hope for the best. Stuff like that does happen when we behave foolishly esp. when we are young. I can think of numerous things that might have caused me great injury and suffering due to stupid decisions I made but for the kindness of friends and strangers alike. Thanks for making me think about this. 💛
@ShannonBoschy4 жыл бұрын
Kate White if we only had a parachute stepping into the unknown. That’s the conundrum. The Fool represents birth as well as death. It’s about moving from one state of Being to the next. We can see some of this archetype in the story of Psyche and Cupid. Psyche as an innocent girl, is visited by Cupid (Eros) at night over and over. This is the experience of moving from childhood to adulthood (fertility and sexual awakening). These kinds of cliffs might have a pool of water at the bottom, or they just might be one-way gates which we travel through, leaving the old ways of being behind and experiencing new worlds as we evolve and grow.

Wait.. was the Jungian archetype never associated with the tarot since it's inception? I thought the tarrot was explicitly designed to express archetypal ideas to begin with?
@ShannonBoschy3 жыл бұрын
A couple things: Tarot originated in the early 1300s. Carl Jung coined the word Archetype and developed his ideas around the study of them in the early 20th century. But this is a semantic distinction. Also in the early part of the 20th century, Tarot was Re-imagined via the Order of the Golden Dawn and the work of A.E. Waite. It consolidated influences of the major western occult traditions into what we know as the modern Tarot. Furthermore, what we call Archetypes are universal. They are found in all religions and cultures and in what we call myths, so creating any work, including modern movies movies with universal themes and character types, Star Wars being a specific Example, involves the use of Archetypes; explicit in the case of Star Wars, implicit in most others. This is a great question, thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!

@ShannonBoschy5 жыл бұрын
That’s a weak semantic argument. One neither informed by a knowledge of Tarot apparently nor a knowledge of Jung. Jung borrowed substantially from other attempts at explaining archetypes. It’s well documented that he coined the term Archetypes in its sense of being a collective or universal pattern based on his studies of Platonic Forms. He borrowed his work on personality types from the classical four elements and the medieval four humours and he did absolutely borrow his structure for the book Aion from the structure of Tarot - which he studied and lectured on in the early 1930s. Tarot, if we’re speaking of archetypes and making weak semantic arguments, well predates the modern definition of Archetypes, and demonstrably existed before the word archetype was ever invented so it is senseless to say Tarot is based on Archetypes. I’m happy to debate further if you want to spar, and thanks for caring enough to share your comment.

Oh Shannon, you have little knowledge of the hero's journey in regards to Tarot. The Magician is traditionaly representitive of consciousness and the high priestess as what is unknown, the unconscious. . And the Empress is mother, the emperor the masculine energy. This is as far as I could get with your video. Look deeper if you are really interested in this subject. Also the Waite deck is late to the party and Junge would not have been looking at this deck.. Want to get the a better symbolic understanding , you should be looking a the Marsielle deck and doing some research. I am a Jungian and have studied the Tarot for years and I find it unfortunate when people speak on a subject that they have only skimmed the surface.
@ShannonBoschy4 жыл бұрын
Dear Pinnacle, thank you for caring enough to share your opinion. Just to be clear, I drew symbolic and structural parallels between the archetypes of tarot and Jung’s explanation of “The Self” in his book “Aion”. I may have used “Hero’s Journey” at some point in the ad hoc exploration of an idea but this is specifically about the parallels between tarot and Aion which I believe to be true. If there is anything I have learned about Archetypes, including the ones in tarot, is that they are living things in the sense that our relationship to them organically evolved along with our maturity and our understanding and how those archetypes play out in our lives. Our interpretations will always evolve over time as opposed to being set in stone and so I really am not interested in playing “I’m right” games with people who don’t see this. I do not make any claims set-in-stone or suggest that my interpretations are right and someone else’s are wrong. I also do not claim that Jung based his book or his models of Self on Tarot. We know he was a student of alchemy, astrology, mediumship and various other schools of esoteric thought. Where we are talking about Archetype we can always expect that when we get to higher orders and levels of analysis that we will find parallels. Having been a student of many of the schools of esoteric that Jung was, I also know that I learn as much from things that trigger a negative response in me or that I disagree with as I do from things that enchant me. In that respect, Thank you, and you’re welcome.

The path off the Arcana that I've laid out in this analysis correlating to Jung's model of The Self, as described in Aion , is perfectly consistent. Of course, you're free to criticize me or Yoong if you like. I find your isolation of the magician interesting; and your integration of the Heirophant into the parings of The Arcana prior to 6 make me curious. I'm concerned with your pairings about knock-on effect in the next turn of the wheel. It could make complete sense in another context - but not This One - not as it related to Jung's model of "The Self." The beauty of tarot is I can read the Majors on a completely different layer three times a week than the one I did in this video, and each would still be valuable as a perspective. Interpretation, as you are most surely aware also depends on who you're reading/teaching. Each deck and every artist has a different tone.... So I appreciate your firm stand but I disagree with your interpretation in this case. Jung devotes an entire chapter in Aion to The Syzygy; which correspond directly to the identity of and relationship between the Emperor and the Empress. Next time I open to my Tarot I'll think about how you suggest to interpret the cards in question, I give it some thought.
