jungle drumfunk on a small 90s mixer

this track is called "poison kiss". i have a handful of small 90s mixers... so i felt like making a "mini studio" and using it to make a drumfunk/jungle track. routing for anyone interested:
renoise patterns are output to mono 1-4 on the mixer. the mixer has two stereo RCA channel pairs, 1 is being fed the roland system 1 synth and the other is being used for the valhalla delay return. the midiverb is being used as the notepad's single mono send/stereo receive. this track was recorded out of the notepad and the only thing i did to it was push the gain up to near 0db. I also added a couple transitions from transit vst just for fun.
the spirit folio has a really nice saturation... maybe not as iconic as a mackie, but I still love it!

Excellent stuff mate! Love the workflow and the explanation you've given. If I was to listen blind, I would have said you're looking at 10-12 tracks. I've got a current day Notepad and still pretty nice being pushed into the red. Had a Folio F1 for years but was too big for my workspace. Lovely track too.

thanks so much for checking it out! i always keep my eyes peeled for old spirit/soundcraft mixers from the era and the F1 popped up a few times but I always missed them. i don't have a huge workspace though, the largest mixer i have is a soundtracs topaz 1402 (which is maybe my fave right now)... anything bigger than that is pretty much a no go.

Love this track. When you actually look into it, Mackie wasn't in such widespread use for this genre as many people believe. Techno and hardcore producers were all over the earlier models because of the distortion effect. There is an Airwindows plugin that is quite good at emulating it. If you can find a Studiomaster mixer of the right vintage, they have parametric low end and hilariously good distortion. Some very famous jungle tunes were mixed on them.

@@arcologies The Studiomaster name has been bought and sold several times and it is a job to pick out the good models. There are some very early models based on 741 op amps, which have amazing distortion but are perhaps less useful for mixing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpWoYYOCfsenqZY
