I had to pay attention that this was a 1948 movie. It felt like a moral builder from 1941,or 42. The squadron went from none killed to all wiped out. No happy ending. A very different type of a war movie. Held my attention from beginning to end. Thanks for posting.💚💙💜👍👍👍

Kristine lived next door from my home. I was 4 or 5. I looked over the cinder block wall, and I peeked over the top. There was a girl sitting on a wheelchair. I thought she was her daughter. We lived on Van Noord Avenue in North Hollywood. It was either 1954 or 1955 or 1956. There is a stamp of my right hand with pink paint. It's still there. My name is Cynthia Taylor. Our new home was a Cape Cod house built in 1954. I was 3. So I think I saw Kristen Miller in 1955 or 1956. There was another couple who lived on the other side from our home. They also worked at the movie studios. All true.

Very much enjoyed. As a veteran of Hollywood filmmaking this could almost be a stage play or radio play. They got quite a bit of story mileage out of a single stage of sets cleverly edited with actual war footage. Also interesting to note the length of the film. Implying it was likely a B Picture. They tended to run :70-:80 minutes

Funny how it doesn’t mention the RAAF Kittyhawks that were the first fighters to defend Port Moresby and the fact that there were RAAF fighters there when supposedly it was only US fighters. Not to disparage the US efforts but to ignore the RAAF efforts or claim that Guadalcanal was the first victory over the Japanese-both Kokoda and Milne Bay were Aussie victories completed before the Marine victory.

Under normal circumstances I would have complained as well, but as this is more about the men and of course lovely lady I thought I would let it slide, but you are 100% right, it always makes me wonder why the ANZACS never seem to get the recognition they deserve, their action in both WWI & WWII, not to mention Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam can’t be understated in my opinion, some of the finest fighting men and women (nowadays) in the world, thanks ANZACS. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇺🇳🇿🇺🇦

@@detdet3871 yes the classic being KOKODA. Not denigrating the Marines especially the First Division who recovered in Melbourne and who proudly wear the Southern Cross on their divisional patch. I agree with the OP, however this movie like many others were made to get the support of the American public at home. In all the theaters where people watched movies like this there was advertising for the sale of war bonds to help fund the war efforts. For the most part few in the US knew anything about the Aussies or New Zealanders accomplishments fighting the Germans or the Japanese.

I have watched this movie before and i really enjoyed it, however it is a much better copy and sound so I think I will enjoy it even more. Ok, I am confused about Jeans husband getting killed at Dunkirk, I can think of no reason other than her husband was British for him to be killed at Dunkirk, the Eagle Squadron wasn’t formed, and as far as I know there wasn’t any American/Canadian units there either, I hope it gets explained as it will bug me. I don’t remember the scene from the first time I watched this film so fingers crossed 🤞.

When Dunkirk occurred America was still neutral. It is possible Americans volunteered to fight in British units. The US Army may have had some observers in the area as well. In New Guinea in 1943 had the US 8th Army on the island which included 5th Air Force commanded by Lt. General George C. Kenny. Their main objective was attacking Japanese ships in the area.

"allandavis8201," It is certainly valid to question the historical accuracy by date of when and where the American forces were involved; from the Comments apparently NOT in Dunkirk. So the screenwriter and the fact checking department at 20th Century Fox Studios need a demerit; their wrists slapped. But from the perspective of the audience getting swept up in the story I think the more important point was that Jean lost her beloved spouse due to the international conflict in which his bravery and selfless participation could not overcome the inevitable: K.I.A., killed in action. The sadness that overwhelmed her may have contributed to her sharing her talent as a singer, a songstress extraordinaire, displaying her ultra-sweet femininity anywhere the American forces were stationed with minimal consideration to herself to the potential for danger.

Though Canadian troops joined the British Expeditionary Force in late 1939, there were not large numbers in France in May 1940. The Historic UK website notes some Canadians were evacuated from Dunkirk, along with French, Belgian and British troops.

Relax Oldfart, the movie is not a documentary. Just a story. Back in those days most of these movies are just about Americans and attempted only show things in a very favorable view of them. As time went by there was plenty of time to show the ugliness of war. But the last thing on there mind was showing all the people working to win that conflict. I don’t watch old movies like this to get the details of the conflict. The first words of the movie says this is a story of men.
