Music by Mitch Leigh
Lyrics by Joe Darion
Performed by Simon Gilbert (dubbing Peter O'Toole) and Men's Chorus
Lyrics:
I have dreamed thee too long
Never seen thee or touched thee
But known thee with all of my heart
Half a prayer, half a song
Thou hast always been with me
Though we have been always apart
Dulcinea... Dulcinea...
I see heaven when I see thee, Dulcinea
And thy name is like a prayer
An angel whispers... Dulcinea... Dulcinea
If I reach out to thee
Do not tremble and shrink
From the touch of my hand on thy hair
Let my fingers but see
Thou art warm and alive
And no phantom to fade in the air
Dulcinea... Dulcinea...
I have sought thee, sung thee
Dreamed thee, Dulcinea
Now I've found thee
And the world shall know thy glory
Dulcinea... Dulcinea

Many people say Don Quixote was insane... if all of mankind were as just, honest, loving, and chivalrous as he was, the world would be a better place. The only reason he was seen as crazy was because no one can ever relate to those ideals

Later in the play Cervantes says that perhaps real madness is living life as it is instead of how it ought to be.

An individual delusion of chivalry, romance and idealism is better than the collective insanity of cruelty, evil, and meaninglessness.

No. He is bonkers. He sees things from a unique vantage, very rose colored glasses vibe. But life isn’t math. Magic exists. Miracles happen, and sometimes if you are the right kinda nuts, the world turns a few degrees your way, hopefully for the better.

Done Quixote is the most sane person ever. He has the courage to understand that life is what you alone make of it. As far as Ducinea, ugh, I am overwhelmed by her beauty and the story told by her eyes.

I can't hear this song without tearing up! It's so beautiful ... Sad and beautiful! To me its not that he sees only good in people, its that when he tells her how beautiful and virtuous she is, she transforms into exactly that! His dream becomes reality... That is beautiful. In life we often see ourselves as others do, good or bad.

he actually saw her, not used as the men in the village had used her and her dreams had died. To them, she was something to use and she had believed them. She eventually saw her value again through his eyes and that not all men just wanted her for one thing.

I stumbled upon this tale, of Don Quixote and Dulcinea and the impossible dream from my bed of pain this morning. God wants us all to be hopelessly romantic and pure in heart like the man of La Mancha. He sees us, each one of us in the same way as Don Quixote seeks his Dulcinea. God has that same passion for you.

The man who wrote Don Quixote was enslaved for 5 years until a friend bought his freedom. I find it astounding how he could maintain the ideals of love and courage after such an experience. Amazing that he could write such a masterpiece after such a past.

in the play the padre later sings the following "To each his Dulcinea, that he alone can name. To each a secret hiding place where he can find the haunting face to light his secret flame. For with his Dulcinea beside him, so to stand.. a man can do quite anything, outfly the bird upon the wing, hold moonlight in his hand. YET if you build your life on dreams its prudent to recall, the man with moonlight in his hand has nothing there at all. There is no Dulcinea. Shes made of flame and air. And yet how lovely life could seem if every man could weave a dream to keep him from despair. To Each His Dulcinea... thought shes nought but flame and air........"

I believe his "insanity" is the only thing keeping him happy and grounded in a world where the establishment i.e. the Inquisition tries to dominate the human spirit into its accepted perception of complicity and obedience. He is the sanest of them all; he is is own lifeline. And his heart is full of the purity and clarity of love...

he says so himself in the movie- he is an idealist - he sees her at her best and she becomes it - it is not fantasy - it is built upon reality but goes to the mountaintops - the swineherds see her as her worst -Aldonza , the whore, like she believed herself to be before she had Don Quixote to believe in her. Have you ever heard of the late bloomer experiment ? Believing in someone can help them be a better version of themselves - not a fantasy. He is in love with her - deeply.

@mrfuzzer1 7 жыл бұрын
No he isn't. He doesn't even know her at that point. He created her before they met and just picked some random woman to project it on. Btw attacking my age and not my point is a an ad hominem and not a valid argument. But I'm I'm 27 if it matters to you.
@rudolftrost3534
@rudolftrost3534 7 жыл бұрын
My apologies, Mikhael, but I think you too much of a realist to truly get what this story stands for - despite your age and learned head (ad hominen, really, using Latin?). By the way, I did not intend to 'attack your perceived age,' only your lack of understanding (MLOTI). I myself am 58 and have seen my share of life. The fact that he is a dreamer and 'just picked some random woman' is NOT the point here. It is an idea given form. Just watch the "Impossible Dream" sequence for more clarity. Turn down the sense of realism and enjoy the story for its universal message.

Just saw this whole thing for the first time in years (plug for Amazon Prime!) and confirmed that (along with Barnum & maybe 1776) it’s simply one of the most underrated shows. It has such good variety of song styles complete with dashes of Spanish flair (not here so much, but in the song “Don Quixote, for example). And I realized that had this been made either sooner or later… like when musicals had sort of a revival around when Chicago came out… it may have been somehow more effective overall. BUT then we may never have had O’Toole’s terrific performance. Even though the ‘70’s had two or three great ones like Fiddler, I think realism was in and overall it was just an iffy decade for the movie musical. But both their performances were perfect and shall always love this music. Curious whether anyone agrees that another decade or director would’ve made a difference, or whether there are a few that simply don’t translate quite as well from stage to screen. 🎭

Yes. That is why he believes a SHAVING BASIN is the mystical Golden Helmet of Mambrino. Oh, yes, and he truly believes Aldonza to be his lady Dulcinea. Tell me, he fought a windmill, but called it a giant, to prove how there are virtues in the world? He was insane, at least slightly. It is a good kind of madness, but madness all the same.

How Don Quixote sees her in this song... that is how God sees us! No matter what we have done... we are His precious children, and this is how He sees us! And this is how He wants us to see each other!

The musical (and movie) "Man of La Mancha" is a fictionalized account about how Miguel de Cervantes wrote "Don Quixote." In real life, Cervantes wrote the book while in prison, and the musical takes it from there. In the musical, Cervantes is thrown in prison and entertains the other prisoners (male and female) with the tales of Don Quixote. Cervantes assigns roles to the other prisoners, with himself taking Don Quixote, and they re-enact the story as he tells it.
