The last 10 minutes or so were so joyful. Just listen to the fans... And Barry Davies' commentary is beautiful - like Clive Tyldesley in 1999 I think he had a few words prepared for if it was a victory for the English side. "The scoreboard puts up one simple word..You find it on the Mersey.. and the name.. is Liverpool"

Watched it on a black and white TV in a hotel as a 10 year old in full Liverpool kit in Spain on holiday in a room full of Germans. I’d been to Wembley 4 days earlier to see them lose the cup final. I will never forget that night and the Germans sent our table a bottle of champagne after the final whistle. Very happy memories 😊

It was 40 years ago today Bob Paisley got his team to play and in such a marvelous way I remember watching the 1977 FA Cup Final four days earlier and seeing United celebrate their goals wildly and with passion so I was delighted we won this marvelous trophy but gutted that Italian tv banned goal celebrations and cut away straightaway to replays of the goal

@Ruda-n4h7 ай бұрын
For me they were the best club side in Europe throughout the 70’s and Hennes Weisweiler the best manager. He made them into a great side without ever buying a star player and having to sell a few and left Udo Lattek to carry on the good work. The ball was played into feet which demands a lot of skill in screening the ball; accuracy of passing; judging when and where to lay a pass so that it would not be intercepted and so that it could be easily received by a colleague. On top of that because opponents tried to stop them playing, there were times when a player received a ball and was immediately put in trouble by quick tackling opponents, but like all great football sides when that happened, Borussia always had men in support in space, available to receive easy balls laid off early. These are the hallmarks of good football, and through a lot of hard work with the ball in training, Borussia not only produced top drawer football but made it pay. But for the infamous 'Coke can' incident against Inter Milan in 1971, they probably would have reached the European Cup final the next year.

I think the game was very close to even. Certainly the fact that both Vogts, Heynckes and Witkamp were not in the best of form was a key factor to Liverpool's success. Both teams had chances but Liverpool, luckier or more determined , finally made it to achieve gold!
@Ruda-n4h4 жыл бұрын
A tragedy the great Moenchengladbach didn't win the European Cup here. Wimmer, Heynkes and one or two others a bit over the top by this point. However if Uli Stielike had buried that chance just before Smith's goal, it would have been flagons of Lowenbrau back at the Bokelberg.
@lyndoncmp57512 жыл бұрын
Nah, Liverpool would have come back. It was their destiny after the St Etienne game. They won it already then. Just like in 2019 when they beat Barcelona in the semi final. But yes Monchengladbach were the best team never to win it. For sure. Them and Leeds.

Assiepato con i tifosi inglesi al centro della Curva Nord; visto partire il "corner" di Heighway, presentii il colpo di testa vincente di Smith! Peccato che non conoscessi le parole del coro "You'll never walk alone"..... Ma una mano, su un lato della sciarpa tenuta tesa da un tifoso "red", ce la aggrappai....

This was not really classic that it is sometimes known as. The hard, bumpy pitch precluded that. However, it should have been taken more notice of by football authorities in Britain, particularly the FA. Liverpool showed how British football could succeed at the highest level with what were, by European / World standards, ordinary players. If only the England team could have found a way of using the Liverpool possession, pass, and move game...

It’s a shame that Moenchengladbach met Liverpool in 1977 when they were getting slightly passed their peak. For me they were the best club side in Europe throughout the 70’s and Hennes Weisweiler the best manager and without ever buying a star player and having to sell a few of their own, as they couldn’t complete financially with other clubs. Through a lot of hard work with the ball in training, Borussia not only produced top drawer football but made it pay. Unfortunately they had problems dealing with the aerial play of English clubs and never really had a top class striker to play up with Jupp Heynkes in the early 70’s.
