To me, Junji Ito's story has always felt like it conceals some deeper meaning that i'll never be able to comprehend. Yet, much like his characters, I'm always drawn to whatever eldritch horrors unfolding before my eyes. Before I knew it, I've already flipped through the last page and I was left wanting for more. I've watched tons of analysis and some of them did make a lot of sense. But I've always wondered if it's really what Ito-sensei intended. I expected your video to be one of those deep-dive, philosophical analysis but you offer a simple and fresh take. Perhaps there really is no deeper meaning behind it, especially considering just how nonchalant and laid-back Ito-sensei is. Ultimately, his works are a reflection of his experience and culture, intended or not. Same goes for people who analyze his works. This means that any interpretations are valid, and that's a pretty cool conclusion to make.
@Jesselaj3 ай бұрын
Part of what is great about his works is they they raise intriguing questions and then implicitly promise us that they won't answer them
@user-ow1bc4sx2r3 ай бұрын
There is always kernels of meaning to them but imo much of his work is less about representing some specific trauma or fear metaphorically (an example of that is something like babadook and hereditary) and more about using a perversion of familiar things and imagery to instill a huge feeling of “wrongness”. Like, I don’t find most of his work to be overly interesting from a literal analysis standpoint of “here the spirals mean schizophrenia and obsession and etc”, because while those themes are prevalent and worth commenting on, the horror in his work is way more often coming from the idea of being a “normal” person confronted with this horrific and incomprehensible reality. So the “true” interpretation is kind of moot. We are engaged with the person who can’t quite grasp that interpretation and it’s their reaction to this discord that’s so engrossing
@gelinrefira3 ай бұрын
I think you got it right. Junji Ito is great at identifying these intrusive thoughts we all have. There is literally a subreddit dedicated to popping things like pimples or digging out stuff from the skin. It's gross and fascinating. Paired that with trypophobia, the fear and uneasy sensation of seeing clusters of small bumps, like severe acne or the back of a Surinam toad carrying eggs. You have both the fear/aversions and irresistible urge towards that fear/aversion. You have thasslophobia, the fear of deep waters and diving deep. There are all kinds of these pairings in the human psyche and Junji Ito is a master of taking these and push it to the limits, almost cosmic level.

You have a very good read on how Junji Ito takes the mundane and takes it to its extreme. Uzumaki is one of my favorite manga of all time and if anything, the one story most find silly in the series is the one that scared me the most. It was the "Spring Boy" story. I too had a guy who liked me and thought the best way to get my attention was to scare me at random intervals by jumping out of random places. As a result I spent most of the school day on edge (I asked him to stop, he did not. Needless to say his affections were never returned). So when I read that, it took me right back to my high school days and I was actually on edge for a bit, thinking that someone, something was going to jump out and scare me. There lies the strength of that sort of horror: a small yet relatable situation taken to its horror branded extreme.
@CHOCOLATIONZ2 ай бұрын
You hit the right spot! Most Junji Ito’s protagonists are the one who have some psychological fear in their minds and then put in that position. Like the girl who hates the invasion of privacy but had to go to the town with no privacy. Or that boy who wanted to be alone but faced with the phenomenon of mass suicide if the crowd gathered.

Ive always seen Ito's m.o. as being very similar to Stephen King's, where he often doesnt think if himself as writing ""horror"" but as an anxious guy writing about what makes him anxious, and when he can communicate that anxiety well enough to communicate/inflict it on his readers then it ends up as horror. I think Ito also fixates on things he knows it doesnt make sense to be nervous about and just follows the thread of, "okay but what if there WAS a reason it made me so anxious?" No matter how absurd that justification ends up being.

For me, Junji Ito's stories appeal because they exceptionally blend a few different things. Arguably the most important is familiarity vs. an *inability* to be familiar. For example, a school club is something we have likely all experienced - if not as a member, then in passing. Flowers with human eyes and a waterfall that brings people back "wrong"? That is beyond our ability to truly understand. It makes the known world feel like a paper-thin stage play and, like the characters in a play, we are blissfully unaware of the reality we actually exist within; the audience members, directors, and very foundations of our world wholly beyond our comprehension - for, to comprehend them, every paradigm upon which we understand reality would... shatter. If I wanted to reduce that to point of losing out on many of the important details, I might try to describe it as "Junji Ito's horror makes me feel like a very small cog in a machine that doesn't even know of my existence."

I'm a relatively new Junji Ito fan, though I got so obsessed (lol) I consumed just about every one of his works available, then turned to every video analysis out there. I think you may be the first to share my belief that he doesn't write his works with any themes in mind, just an idea that he found interesting (though we can still derive meaning from the final work), as well as the only one to point out the theme(s) of love. Personally, while the various quirky ideas do a fantastic job of drawing me in, it's the themes about love that had kept me a fan of Junji's work and where I feel his storytelling truly shines through, so I'm ecstatic that you mentioned it! Also an afterthought on my part, but I'm also really excited to learn about the 'contemporary kaidan' genre! Labelling Junji's work as 'cosmic horror' never sat right with me for whatever reason, and describing it as more like 'modern urban legends' is so perfect, particularly as I'm also a fan of cryptids and SCPs, which I think are sort of the Western equivalent!

Great essay exploring the themes that we can derive from Ito's work. He has said himself in interviews that a lot of his stories come from an idea, followed by a question "wouldn't that be scary?" and then running with it as you point out. "Fish with legs, wouldn't that be scary?" "Humans growing in layers like a tree, wouldn't that be scary?" "Spirals, wouldn't that be scary?" I don't think he intentionally or consciously sets out to explore the themes mentioned in the video, but that the stories themselves can be used to explore those themes by reading them is what makes his work really stand out and memorable

I've always thought that the theme in Ito's horror was about the disparity between the supposed composure of a rational mind and the impulses of the irrational mind, as both coexist in everyone and there is no quantifiable way to predict and determine nor to restrain them. It just always exists as a struggle and a contradiction within us. The horror doesn't come from the weird occurrences in itself but the responses from the people who are involved in the events by succumbing to it or by avoiding it in a way that is never predictable. Conformity in society release us from this struggle in some way, but it also engenders it from deep within, and the more our societies try to uphold the rational aspects, the irrationality that is also in our nature grows as well. It had to be a Japanese guy who turned such a phenomena into a successful recipe for horror. But such themes are also within existential horror and southern gothic. In Ito all of these coalesce. And I do agree that Ito himself might not do it consciously, but it's present even in the balloons one.

I've collected Junji Ito's mangas, and while his body horror illustrations are undeniably stunning, I find the stories far from terrifying. His works' ghosts, ghouls, demons, and cosmic entities are unique, but they often feel somewhat dull and nonsensical-for instance, the story about humans turning into floating balloons. Ironically, the most frightening story in Junji Ito's collection, in my opinion, has no supernatural elements, and it's found in The Bully. In this story, Kuriko, as a child, relentlessly bullied a boy named Nao despite his loyalty and affection toward her. Years later, Nao reappears in her life as an adult and confesses that he never stopped loving her. Relieved by his forgiveness, Kuriko leaves her boyfriend, Yutaro, for Nao, believing this absolves her guilt. They marry and have a child, but after their child is born, Nao mysteriously vanishes, leaving Kuriko abandoned. This triggers a downward spiral, where Kuriko starts projecting her unresolved guilt and anger onto their son, Hiroshi, treating him as a substitute for Nao and reliving the cruelty she inflicted on Nao during her childhood. The most terrifying Junji Ito manga is No Longer Human, his adaptation of Osamu Dazai's novel, which some say is an autobiography. It follows Yozo Oba, a young man profoundly disconnected from society and struggling to comprehend human emotions. Hiding behind a cheerful facade, Yozo's life spirals into destructive behaviors like alcoholism, drug abuse, and failed suicide attempts. His toxic relationships with women lead to even more tragedy. The story profoundly explores themes of alienation, depression, and existential despair. Ito's adaptation heightens the psychological horror with grotesque, haunting artwork, turning the narrative into a visceral journey. Told through Yozo's personal notebooks, it offers a raw, introspective look at his descent into hopelessness.

Episode 1 is crueler in a way, because like a world of normalcy only to slowly be taken over by soul-sucking spirals...it gave fans a false sense of hope. Hope that a studio could take manga adaptation to a whole new level. Hope that even Junji Ito's absurdly-difficult artstyle and premise could work and actually BE scary. Atlast......it was too good to be true. I'm not sure about the timeline, but I'm assuming based on the animation quality, the original studio spent 4 years working on episode 1 alone, only to then (understandably) have the funders say "Yo this is taking too long. You got a year and a new budget." So they turned to some porn company to finish the last three episodes asap, and now we got what we got. What's even worse: There's tiny little moments in the animation of the newer episodes where you can see brief moments of actual DECENT ANIMATION. Like, it's a few seconds, but it's there. As cruel as someone with Dementia having sudden clarity and saying to their husband "I remember you, and I love you." only to then go back to oblivion. I am just so disappointed. If I had millions of dollars, I'd just pay for the last 3 episodes to be perfect, and give them another 3 years to finish it, one year per episode. Well....atleast we got a cool vinyl album collectible.

Hard pass on this anime. I enjoyed the manga for what it is. It should have been at least 24 eps to fully adapt the source material.

They poured their entire heart, soul, and money into the first episode. Show fell off, lol. Ito and Miura's works will always be unadaptable in a capitalist economy, where the main goal is to make huge profits for a short time. This is why true art and capitalism never mix well.

Anyone want to bet this will be taken down soon by copyright bots designed to be abused by Japanese companies like ShoPro and Toei?

I beg your pardon, but Tomie represents men's guilty conscience over the fact that they are responsible for the overwhelming majority of the rapes and murders while women and girls are their main targets. What if their victims were to come back from the dead to exact revenge? That's what Tomie as well as a great many other horror stories are about. It's disgusting that your interpretation puts the burden of the blame on the shoulders of the victims, but perhaps not surprising coming from a man after all.

You may not be familiar with the Tomie series, because Tomie loves vanity and pride. Her relationships with other girls (including her own clones) are also bad

Your interpretation isn't THE interpretation. Get over yourself.

Let me begin by stating that I absolutely agree with your view on the Tomie series. It is without a doubt about sexism and the objectification of women. I just want to clarify that what you stated is a theme, or the moral of the story. Whereas in this video, we only discussed Tomie is terms of what tickles the subconscious, without going into the textual aspect of it. The differences between that and the theme, using Layers of Fear as an example, is the grossness of peeling skin (the sting) vs the horror of a mother obsessed with youth (the theme). There already is a video called Tomie Did Nothing Wrong, which dives into this topic with amazing detail. That's why I didn't feel like including Tomie in the later social commentary part of the video.

The first time I watch movie INCEPTION it reminds me of LONG DREAM. I wish there are more filmmakers take ideas from Juni Ito's works and produce great movies.

You phrased it as if Inception took from Ito which is hilariously ridiculous. More implies that there were already some.

Bruh. I really really don't think Tomie is about "cuteness aggression." Tomie is murdered because she threatens to reveal she is being statutorily raped by her teacher, who then rallies the boys of the class into taking off their clothes and mutilating her body while she's still alive. Almost all her attackers throughout the whole book are men, and the trigger point is usually when she refuses to give them love and affection and they punish her for it. It is very VERY much about misogyny and rape culture. The true horror of Tomie is that she is denied her humanity due to her beauty, and she is denied her bodily autonomy because of how other people (again, almost all of them men) feel they have a right to it. The women of the story either victim-blame her or attempt to use her beauty as something to live vicariously through. One girl even destroys herself trying to be as beautiful as Tomie in a commentary on strict beauty standards. I don't see how it could be any more clearly about sexism.
