Wow I loved this video! I loved how you explained how the game worked/how it is played (bc I’m a beginner player myself and it was really helpful) and also explaining the metaphor that their mahjong game had to their real life story it was super interesting that it all tied up which I thought was so smart like omg I was surprised! When I watched crazy rich Asians I never realised this, it was so cool and interesting to see the story behind their gameplay!! Such a good video!!!!

How could the adult actors and most importantly, child actors, film these scenes without throwing up a little inside…kudos for the directing making it believable, but in reality these adults (acting or not) were still touching these kids in inappropriate ways….its a weird dichotomy.

Not even Dynasty Warriors games’s fan like the Netflix adaptation. But speaking of Dynasty Warrior, the Strike Force spin off where everyone gets a transformation is cool. The transformation represents the character very well, for example Dong Zhou’s form is a demonic boar monster. Maybe Netflix could have leaned into pure absurdity instead of trying to make sense of the over the top tone of DW.
While this is excusable to actors who were just happy to land a role and did not want their objections or lack of proficiency to ruin an opportunity, to a celebrity actor who can comfortably afford a dialect coach and language lessons, and especially who has a years-long contract with a TV show playing an ostensibly non-native anglophone character, there's no excuse whatsoever. They have security, they have money, and in some cases that ethnic character was responsible for all their fame and fortune. The least they could've done was to own up to the truth of that character, and the opportunity, by learning the language. And yet some never do. Daniel Dae Kim in Lost is a prime example. He had 8 years on LOST playing a character who ostensibly could not speak english, and could speak only Korean. And yet his Korean on the show was legendary for its badness in Korea. 8 years on one of the most famous TV shows ever should guarantee all the resources he needs - and in the 8 years he's never made a good effort to improve, and he remained, to the end content, to just phone it in. And I cannot wrap my head around that kind of lack of self-respect as an actor. You're not an actor if you do this, you're a pretender selling a yellow face.

A film editor friend recommended *Black Dog* to me (winner of Cannes Un Certain Regard award). I'm aware films that appeal to Western eyes may not be seen in the same way as native viewers, so I'm really curious about how Chinese viewed the film and all the contextual details I've missed. Nonetheless, it's a beautifully told story, despite the harsh conditions there is a real gentleness about the way things are conveyed. If you enjoy social history and unique out of the way places, I'd highly recommend it.

I think the education we receive from childhood should be based on learning how to be "human" instead of deliberately prioritizing the country or nation, especially the extreme national sentiments in mainland China.

This statement is really unconvincing. The Communist Party of China has a certain control over academic research and cultural opinions, which certainly includes the definition of Chinese mythological values (such as atheism).

Sergio Leone is big influence on Woo. There's a great documentary on here about him somewhere, which goes into how he'd mess with real time and slow-mo by cutting back and forth between the two. But yeh, it's funny how Hollywood took "gun-fu" way literally, whereas with Woo it was understood to be deeply rooted into the ethos of Hong Kong Cinema going back to the Peking Opera etc. ...and manifests without announcing itself if that makes any sense.

Although there are limitations on technical costs, it is undeniable that we can see the playfulness of the producers at that time. This movie alone is a very good example. Many vulgar jokes that were obviously very tasteless were not tabooed by many people at that time, but instead All of them are classics. At that time, Hong Kong could only say that no matter what you filmed, you didn’t have to worry about the evil SJWs and communist bandits. You just wanted to film whatever you wanted to be your truest self. In fact, it was indeed a beautiful era for Hong Kong people. What was even more terrifying was these classics. Most of Hong Kong films are produced under the supervision of gangsters, just like Taiwanese films of the same era. On the other hand, Hong Kong films in recent years have lost the vitality they once had in order to cater to the mainland.
