How to make a junk journal from start to finish. In this series, I'm sharing all the details on creating my first junk journal and in this video I'm back for Part 2 of my Junk Journal Journey. In this episode I'm sharing about creating the cover for my junk journal and sewing in the signatures. This part of the journey was a bit challenging and at times a little frustrating, but I learned SO much that will help me when it comes time to make my next journal. In this video I share all that I learned with the hope that it will help you avoid these same frustrations. From how to cut thick chipboard, to the easiest way to poke holes, I've got loads of tips to share.

Great video, Juliana! I've been making these journals for years and it only gets better in time, I promise! I found that hair pins are the best for holding the papers in each signature while sewing (not my idea, Johanna Clough had a video about it years ago and I've changed my method from big metal clips to these hair bobby pins and they do hold the papers better). I've never used paper for covering the cover, only fabric, but the collage paper from Tim Holtz looks so so beautiful! I highly recommend you to give Tim Holtz's Retractable Craft Pick, I've been using this tool since 2012 (when I started bookbinding) and it makes the perfect holes that goes through even the thickest chipboards. About cutting the corners of the covers, Sea Lemon has the best bookbinding videos about this topic and she cuts it in a way that will make the corner so so pretty. I've used to do it like that for years and it really looked more polished that way. Nowadays, I use a metal tool I've got from a local craft store in my hometown. And PVA glue is the best, I love using it for bookbinding. That's it, hope you continue making more and more and more journals, it is such a lovely way to use our scrapbooking supply and I love Tim Holtz products so much, it was amazing seeing you incorporate them in your project and everything turned out so so lovely! Thanks for sharing your process and it is such a great thing, to see your journey into this craft. I hope you enjoyed the process as well, I loved seeing every step. Such a great video, thank you for sharing!

@@JulianaMichaels sorry for replying so late! You're so welcome! I love seeing your journey (JJJ, so cool and catchy!) and I hope you'll make many journals along the way! For me, it's the perfect gift for friends and family! Nothing is more precious than gifting someone you love a beautiful handmade journal. But most important- Enjoy the process! It can be really relaxing to create a journal when you let go of perfectionism. I've learnt so much about myself through the making of these journals :)

You’re already one of my favourite “Tim” makers so it’s great to watch you expand into junk journals. I’ve learned how to make them by watching Luise Heinzl, Barbara at 49dragonflies and other talentedKZbin JJ artists. I’ve only made a couple at this point but I’m excited to try more. Your method is so clear and precise and easy to follow. I can’t wait to see how you decorate it in your own amazing style. Amazing work Juliana. ❤️🇨🇦❤️

This was super interesting to watch! I really love that you also shared your struggles! To glue things like ribbon or fabric I like to use bookbinder's glue, perhaps that's an option for you too.

This is such a lovely cover! Yes, the tape is a problem to glue to. E6000 will glue anything, I think. The new one, E6000 plus, I believe, has no smell. (as advertised, anyway. I haven't tried it) I'm so happy to have found your channel! Hugs, Peggy

I am so sorry you experienced bodily injury from the awl! Good for you for still continuing to finish the journal after the injury and then the antique paper cracking and the other signature. I use the crop dile now too-and it makes that part faster. I even am brave enough that I use eyelets on the holes in the spine and I feel like it is a more finished look. I use fabri-tac but the fabric isn't going anywhere. Also, I learned from Pam at the Paper Outpost to transfer the fabri-tac into a sugar bell bottle and it's easier to squeeze and give a finer line. In the end-the coolest part of junk journals is everyone can do it their own way. You already have great style :)

Hi Juliana, I am enjoying this series--I watched your flip through first and just had to come back and watch all the other videos. I use an old fashioned clothes pin to hold the end of binding thread, just gives me peace of mind. I sometimes use an ice pick to make my holes. I use an old phone book (but any old book will work) to punch into. I may have to try the crop-o-dile method, I don't always have the best luck with mine. I use art glitter glue for my ribbons and also my fabric. I believe the PVA glue will also work. I am not a fan of the 3in1--you are right so stinky. All of this gets easier over time with practice. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us I am really enjoying it.

Great video! I’ve watched so many and it seems there are as many ways to make a JJ as there are artists! The “3 in 1” glue is similar to Fabritac (solvent/acetone based which is why it stinks so much!) and I really hate getting it on my hands but using gloves makes it 10 times worse! What I do is after it dries, I rub my fingers on the back of my iPad cover (it is a rubbery plastic) and the glue boogers just roll right off! Looking forward to seeing the next video! TYFS ❤️🦋💜

I am so enjoying your journey with junk journaling. I too am new to this as I'm a card maker and mini album folio maker using scrapbook paper. My first journal was made from a bubble mailer folded in half so it did not have a spine like yours. I had 3 signatures and did not know how to attach them! There are so many videos out there and after spending hours watching them, I still made a ton of mistakes as I am very impatient! I can recommend using Fabri-tac for gluing on fabric. That's what I used and I love it. Looking forward to part 3!

enjoying your process videos! im about to make my first junk journal and i decided to use my cinch to bind the pages together. i love the sturdiness and clean line it gives but you have to commit to the number of pages at the beginning which can be a challenge. curious what the brown netting material you have at the top of the screen. is it like a trim? i bet it would be great for texture.

I thought about a Cinch as well and may try that in the future! That brown netting is what I used on the spine of the journal. I found it at Hobby Lobby.
