The Junkers Ju 87 or Stuka (from Sturzkampfflugzeug, "dive bomber") was a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft. Designed by Hermann Pohlmann, it first flew in 1935. The Ju 87 made its combat debut in 1937 with the Luftwaffe's Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 and served Axis forces in World War II (1939-1945).
The aircraft is easily recognisable by its inverted gull wings and fixed spatted undercarriage. Upon the leading edges of its faired main gear legs were mounted ram-air sirens known as Jericho trumpets , which became a propaganda symbol of German air power and of the so-called Blitzkrieg victories of 1939-1942, as well as providing Stuka pilots with audible feedback as to speed. The Stuka's design included several innovations, including automatic pull-up dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the aircraft recovered from its attack dive even if the pilot blacked out from the high g-forces.
The Ju 87 operated with considerable success in close air support and anti-shipping roles at the outbreak of World War II. It led air assaults in the invasion of Poland in September 1939. Stukas proved critical to the rapid conquest of Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium and France in 1940. Though sturdy, accurate, and very effective against ground targets, the Stuka was, like many other dive bombers of the period, vulnerable to fighter aircraft. During the Battle of Britain of 1940-1941, its lack of manoeuvrability, speed and defensive armament meant that it required a heavy fighter escort to operate effectively.
After the Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe deployed Stuka units in the Balkans Campaign, the African and the Mediterranean theatres and in the early stages of the Eastern Front war, where it was used for general ground support, as an effective specialised anti-tank aircraft and in an anti-shipping role. Once the Luftwaffe lost air superiority, the Stuka became an easy target for enemy fighter-aircraft. It was produced until 1944 for lack of a better replacement. By 1945 ground-attack versions of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 had largely replaced the Ju 87, but it remained in service until the end of the war in 1945.
Germany built an estimated 6,000 Ju 87s of all versions between 1936 and August 1944.
Oberst Hans-Ulrich Rudel became the most successful Stuka pilot and the most highly decorated German serviceman of the Second World War.
The Ju 87's principal designer, Hermann Pohlmann, held the opinion that any dive-bomber design needed to be simple and robust. This led to many technical innovations, such as the retractable undercarriage being discarded in favour of one of the Stuka's distinctive features, its fixed and "spatted" undercarriage. Pohlmann continued to carry on developing and adding to his ideas and those of Dipl Ing Karl Plauth (Plauth was killed in a flying accident in November 1927), and produced the Ju A 48, which underwent testing on 29 September 1928. The military version of the Ju A 48 was designated the Ju K 47.

Despite initial competition from the Henschel Hs 123, the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM, the German aviation ministry) turned to the designs of Herman Pohlmann of Junkers and co-designer of the K 47, Karl Plauth. During the trials with the K 47 in 1932, the double vertical stabilisers were introduced to give the rear gunner a better field of fire. The main, and what was to be the most distinctive, feature of the Ju 87 was its double-spar inverted gull wings. After Plauth's death, Pohlmann continued the development of the Junkers dive bomber. The Ju A 48 registration D-ITOR, was originally fitted with a BMW 132 engine, producing 450 kW (600 hp).

The siren caused drag but had some initial success in discouraging defenders. Once that fear was overcome the trumpet wasn't worth it anymore. So useful for the initial months of the war, not so much after that.

In practice, Luftwaffe aircrews quickly got rid of the sirens (which were also never called Jericho Trumpets by the Germans) because they caused unnecessary drag. They made for a nice propaganda tool in news reels but getting every mph from their crates was a bit more important than sounding scary.

It wasn't capable of outrunning up to date fighter aircraft anyway. Might just as well sound scary. The unfortunate target who can't or isn't allowed to change position rather swiftly might have been slightly unnerved having to stick to positions. Those who could try to evade the attack were all that much more certain to do so instantly. I don't know how relevant it is in this case, but I guess there are other advantages from lesser drag as well as higher top speed. Clearly it did matter enough to forgo infamous psychological effect however.

Many years ag, i read in a BOOK that the Jericho trumpet was an impeller that drove a dive speed indicator, helping give the Stuka it's bombing accuracy. I've been unable to find the reference online or in print.

Jericho horns gave audible cue for altitude/bomb release. SPARS INSTRUMENTATION DIVE ANGLE INDICATOR a LOW FUEL INDICATOR LIGHT(idiot light in US) air speed maybe and a clock. There is a rear facing navigator I Imagine he had more instruments back there....maybe a forward facing mirror, cup holder perhaps? Out.

The Ju 88 transitioned from dive bombing to low level gun ship and ended the war as a very effective night raider against allied air fields and supply depots that had one of the lowest attrition rates of the war, about 0.6% the same as the Mosquito and Marauder at that time. -The Ju 88 was designed to provide support to the Army while escorted by fighters only over front lines until artillery had been brought forward. If Germany had of maintained air pairty it probably could have been used in that role very well. --The reality was that the Germans didn't need the StuKa dive bomber so much after 1942 because they had the Lotfe 7 computing bomb sight and the StuVi 5B computing slide bombing sight allowed Ju 88, Me 210/410 and other aircrafft to bomb accurately without dive brakes.. With the Lofte 7 the bomb aimer adjusted the speed of variable speed drives in the sight to track the target (the sight contained trigonometric cams to linearize). This gave speed over ground and wind drift as well as target speed and allowed the sight to calculated the aiming offset. It was very accurate and could hit a moving merchant ship from 3500m with a 50% chance of a hit. The StuVi 5B had a moving bar that told the pilot where the bombs would go. The Ju 88 typically entered a dive at 8000ft at 22 degrees, released and pulled up by 5000ft. The Ju 88 had both Lotfe 7 and StuVi 5B so the Lotfe 7 was used to provide wind data to the StuVi as well as line up the dive. -During Operation Northwind (Luftwaffe Support for the Battle of the Bulge) the Luftwaffe started using the TSA-2D toss bombing sight on KG51 Me 262. With this sight you did a shallow dive at the target, pulled up and the bombs were released automatically during the pull up. The sight was to be used on Fw 190D jabos as well. So there was no need.

After all, it has been 6 centuries, and Michelangelo is far more relevant to history than any less than a century old plane. Ju 87G that were used on the Eastern front had lower attrition rates than the Fw 190F mainly because they had escorts. The tactic was to fly low and enter a tight turn. The Soviet fighter would then be exposed to the rear gunner and would have difficulty getting his guns onto the Ju 87 due to the low altitude and tight turn. The gunner might damage or even shoot down the soviet or it might break off when an escort came.

During the dialogue you used, It said "the small-engined Stuka..." when you meant. "the SINGLE-engined..." The inverted Junkers Jumo V-12 --there was NOTHING 'small' about it, being one of Junkers largest piston engines, plus the Stuka was NOT a "small plane!" When you eretalking about the "Jerico's Trumpet" look @ the Ju-87A model with a "23" on the right wheel spat. "That was NOT manning a "Jericho-Trumpet," because the "A" models didn't use them, nor did the later Ju-87"D" (Dora) models. Most Ju-87"B"s, used them. but the "D"s were replacing them by '42, and I don't know WHY the Luftwaffe STOPPED using them on ALL Ju-87s, from the "B" through "D", but for some reason, they did STOP using the "Jericho."

Good question, but the japanese designed the val after seeing the stuka, so its almost an offshoot, but, the japanese made everything long range for the pacific, so the stuka may have not been as easy to burst into flames, but probably not had the range needed there ... I think the american . 50 cals would have easily taken care of them, either way.

The Ju 87 performed very well in the anti shipping role. The Ju 87 was very accurate due to its excellent controllabillity in the dive though the crews needed training to hit moving ships. The early Ju 87B versions of the StuKa had a relatively short range (to small for the Pacific) because the purpose was only to support the German army over front lines until 150mm artillery could be brought forward. They were supposed to fly back to a forward airfield and rearm and refuel so range of 595km/370 miles with a 500kg/1100 lb bomb was adequate. The anti shipping missions the Luftwaffe might need to conduct in 1938 would have been short ranged as well. -The need for longer range lead to the improvised Ju 88R which was a Ju 88B with increased oil capacity and plumbing for a pair of 300L/66 Imp Gallon drop tanks under the wings and rescue and survival equipment. Some took part in the German invasion of Norway in April 1940. The British Royal Navy (RN) was surprised by the appearance of the Ju 87R, and the type sank the RN destroyers HMS AFRIDI, BISON, and GROM, as well as the anti-aircraft ship BITTERN. BITTERN's sister ship, the BLACK SWAN, was hit by a Stuka, but the bomb was dropped too low and armed too late, passing through the ship before exploding; the BLACK SWAN survived. -The Ju 88C was a Ju 88R with power folding wings modified to fly of aircraft carriers, flotation gear and the ability to carry a torpedo. Some were built and used in combat but of course never of an aircraft carriers as the Graf Zeppelin was never built.. -Finally the standardized Ju 88D had 800L of extra fuel, a 60cm increase in wing span g and also drop tanks had plenty of range. range, internal fuel: 820 kilometers (510 MI / 445 NMI) range with tanks: 1,535 kilometers (955 MI / 830 NMI) with bomb load. -The reality was that the Germans didn't need the StuKa dive bomber so much after 1942 because they had the Lotfe 7 computing bomb sight and the StuVi 5B computing slide bombing sight allowed Ju 88, Me 210/410 and other aircrafft to bomb accurately without dive brakes.. Strange, I'm from Germany (where the plane comes from) and we pronounce it exactly how it is in the documentary, I guess the narrator decided to pronounce it how it is actually supposed to be!
