The gm alternator on the Ford right there is the problem!:D That and the fuel leaking all over the place. They needed the blocks in the springs because they swapped in the Lincoln 460 and added the plow. That transfercase is a full time 4wd NP203. The NP203 has the range box in front of the case. So either someone converted the hubs to lock out style or they swapped the whole front axle assembly out for one from a part time 4x4 D44. Feel free to send the 300 my way! They are my favorite engine and I've got a small hoard of the 240/300's.

50:39 The local guy I took my 1979 F259 with a 460 to in order to get it running (after sitting for 11 years) said he put a 1969 timing chain in it so it made better fuel mileage and more power. I can say, as a kid fresh outta high school, that truck made plenty of power for me to have plenty of fun. He also plugged the emissions stuff on the engine, as it was a California model and had a Catalytic converter on it (apparently the first year those were put on the old Ford truck, but ONLY for the California model in 1979 from what I’ve heard). As it say for over a decade, I just cut the catalytic converters and muffler off, right behind the cab, and ran it like that. Outrageously loud and fun for an 18 year old. Still have the ol’ girl, just need the money to rebuild the engine a couple other minor things.

Yes starters and gears need to match tooth count because of spacing between the ridge and valley of the tooth pattern. The main reason there are so many is for diferent gear reductions to turn the motor easier depending on what it is, compression ratio over square under square targeted cranking amps and size of the starter that you can fit are a few things to be considered.

"one guys having a seizure, the other guys having a stroke. Ford" after working on fords recently i agree *edit : quick note - the early 460s (70-74) had nylon cam gear teeth that people swapped out to prevent them to break. they started out at like 10:1 compression ratio but then slowly dropped over the years and got smaller carbs and more emissions tubing becuz smog. check the heads on that motor behind the exhaust manifold for D0VE/D3VE/D1VE stamps

That's exactly what Ford did on the Essex V6 in the UK, used in Capris, Zephyrs, Zodiacs, Consuls and Granadas, as well as Transits, if you were mad enough or an emergency service. The nylon cam gears were a nightmare as, once they got to a certain age, the heat cycles would make them go hard and brittle and they'd lose the teeth of them, which would often ruin the engine as pistons would meet valves and all sorts of carnage would occur. Steel gears were a bit noisier, but didn't break, and you can now get replacement cam gears that are made to be quiet and last a long time. Back then, however, material technology wasn't up to the job...
