I remember seeing so many of these 70’s jet boats on the lake every summer when I was a little boy in the 80’s. I always thought they were the epitome of cool especially with the big chrome Bassett headers sticking out the back. Then slowly the ugly ski boats took over as these nostalgic jet boats faded away. Summer’s were never the same again. Thank you for reviving one of these sexy boats from yesteryear.

Not sure if you ever come back and read comments on these older videos you have put out, but this video reminds me of a story I would like to share. About 30 years ago when I lived in Dallas, my neighbor across the street was kind of a strange character. I came home one day to find him out in front of his house looking at a jet boat just like the one in this video that he bought and drug back home. Had the exact same set up with a 455 in it. Same exact problem. Milk shake oil. He bought the boat for like $500 and hoped I could help him put a new engine in it. Luckily for him I had a good mechanical background and agreed to help. So he goes out and buys a long block crate engine for it. I think he paid about $900 for it. Again, this was about 30 years ago. So we remove and replace the engine, and one of the things I remember was having problems with initial start up. I recheck the firing order 3 or 4 times and kept scratching my head. Then I pull the distributor cap off and have him tap the key. DANG it I forgot these engines turn their rotors backwards as compared to Chevy's which is what I am more used to work on. So I fix the wires and bam it fires right up. So off to the lake we go. As soon as we back the boat into the water, I am getting worried. The wind is blowing like crazy (like it always does in TX) and waves start to crash over the stern which is only about 4 inches out of the water. Of course they don't have reverse and they are always in gear when the motor is running, so we finally get it turned around with a paddle, fire it up, and off we go. That thing ran great!!! We had fun playing with the trim and shooting a rooster tail 50 feet in the air. Ran it for about 30-40 minutes and then headed back to the dock. Got it back on the trailer and pulled it out. Checked the oil. Milkshake again!!! We were like DAMN that SUCKS!!! At that point, I figured it had a cracked intake manifold since that was the only thing we reused off of the other motor, but my neighbor was done with it. We got it back home and it sat for about 4 or 5 months and then he sold it. He showed the guy who bought it the water in the oil and told him the whole story. I think he still got about $1,500 out of it so he didn't lose any money just our time and lots of aggravation. I am hoping the guy that bought it was able to fix whatever was leaking (might have just been the intake gasket I don't know). This video brought back a lot of memories. Not all of them good but not all of them bad either. LOL!!!!!

The transmission in that camper was a TH-425. It's a TH-400 with a 180 degree chain drive to make it point forward and then the center section of a rearend bolted to the output. The front suspension that goes with those transmissions is very similar to old GM 4x4 front torsion bar suspension. Those transmissions were used from '66 to '78 in the Toronado and the Eldorado.

The GM Truck and Bus division made a GMC Motorhome from 1973 - 1977 using 455 (73-76) and 403 (77) Olds Toronado Drivetrain packages. They were FWD and came in 23 ft and 26 ft versions. They were much easier to drive than a standard Class A motorhome because the FWD architecture allowed for a lower overall vehicle and a low center of gravity. The most famous one is the EMD-50 from the movie Stripes.

The part you are referring to as a windage tray is actually a valley pan, you'll find a windage tray in the base of the engine under the crankshaft if so equipped.

And for people asking what for it stops oil from cavitation and producing air in oil.
@MaxGiganteum
@MaxGiganteum 2 жыл бұрын
What a windage tray does is keep oil away from the crankshaft... anytime the crank splashes through oil, the engine encounters a reduction in power. Cavitation? The crankshaft shouldn't ever experience cavitation - if it does then you've got way too much oil in the crankcase! Peace & good vibes! ✌🏻🤘🏻👍🏻🇺🇸 - Max Giganteum

And on a Buick with the pcv valve in the intake you WILL suck up oil through the valve without the valley pan gasket. Either use it, use fiber gaskets and a lifter baffle TA performance sells, or delete the pcv which isn't really recommended.

Wet exhausts on boats is pretty much a must. You're spending most of your time over 3500 RPM, so the exhaust would get red hot and catch the fiberglass on fire - that would be a bad time. It's less important for this open engine compartment 180 header setup, but still, fires on boats are a bad time.
@JasperFromMS

@Cyberdeamon

@compzac
@compzac 2 жыл бұрын
@@KameraShy Generally the water in the engine is pumped through the manifold on its way out, boats engines tend not to recirculate because... well the reason they dont need to is kinda obvious, and the best way to make the water leave is to just pump it through the exhaust, those tubes might be adding some cool water that skips the engine, but in all liklihood those tubes are essential because that is how the water is getting from the engine into the exhaust, as far as i know the olds 455 doesnt allow coolant to flow to the exhaust normally so those tubes are probably the output, since they are coming from where the water pump would have been.

Oldsmobile engines are actually pretty scarce these days, a few months ago a buddy of mine needed a "small block" or "short deck" olds engine, we really wanted a 403 or atleast a 350. For weeks the only engine he could find that was in running condition was a 455 but I said no way, it would have been too much to swap into the car because the car was set up for a short deck engine because it had a 350 olds in it ( the accessory brackets and the exhaust was the main reason why we needed a low deck engine) so he kept calling around and after we gave up for a bit the junkyard got in a wrecked car that had a low mileage roller cam 307 engine, I was not thrilled about it but it was very clean and after we put it in, it actually ran way better than I ever thought, it was super quiet and smooth and felt just as strong as the wore out 350 we took out. So in my opinion if you ever need an olds engine that is reliable and will get you down the road, try to find an 86-90 roller cam 307.

Great video and really fun to watch now with all the sand in that motor and being as old as it is you will probably need a new impeller that will probably give you a lot more speed.

Was thinking the same thing all that sand in motor and oil has to be eating up those crank bearings n piston tubes.maybe itll flush out,but it would take complety pulling up motor to totally clean out.good thing they have a spare.guesse they dont care.snooky💥👍💥

@@allensnook7760 the sand is in the cooling passages and that engine would probably run with zero oil in it for about 30 or so minutes before it gave up

Thanks for the off beat different "revival". It reminded me of a little adventure. Ages ago, when I was about 18, I was interested in a girl who's dad had similar type Berkley Jet boat with a 454 dual quad engine with muffled exhaust into the water. He let me take for a spin on an early August morning when Okanagan Lake was glass. He told me to open her up (the boat silly) as I'd been running boats since I was 5. Anyway I had it running (with the Girl as copilot) at 74 MPH according to the speedo. The owner said no one had ever got it going that fast before. Somehow he never asked me if I wanted to take it for a spin again. Thanks for the memories. 😉

I think you guys trying to help put old vehicles back on the road or water is great! My family has so many cars that need to be restored to run again but my parents are elderly and I have nerve damage making it hard to get it all done plus i am inexperienced. Some day I will eventually get all of the cars back on the road but it will take me years. Keep up the good work guys!

First of all big fan of you guys! Second this is probably my favorite setup for a jetboat other than it being a flat bottom. A few things. Most 455 olds jetboats came with marine holleys. That's probably a conversion from a 350 olds which is fun in it's own way. If it's a J berkeley Pump it's a big block originally (from memory). I see a couple issues with this boat still. You NEED a skeg on the back for a couple reasons. One is low speed handling but the second is really key. When he opened the secondaries it sounded and looked lean. Non marine holleys lack a surge plate which mainly works when you let off the gas going from wot to idle. A lot of times it's because you hit chop. Without a surge plate stalling becomes an issue at times. A skeg will help if you lose power. Without power your steering is awful. Think of how it wanders at idle and is easy to oversteer even then. A skeg helps if it stalls regardless of the issue. Not a lot but it can save your life tbh. It might be fuel pump causing what seemed to be a leanness when he got on it or just the camera shaking. Regardless DUMP that velocity stack. That was a common attempt to fix stalls from running non marine carbs and it didnt work anyways. Olds 455 motors and this one appears out of a passenger car maybe mid 70's are torque monsters. Wrapping 5200 stock should be easy for any of them and even the pre smog motors were still torque monsters. The velocity stack is kind of a chevy thing imo. The other big difference with a marine carb is the fuel overflows dump down the throat. Not straight up. Most states the police that know their crap will ticket you for a non marine carb. A cheap fix is a spark arrestor intake. One of those old wire mesh things. A lot of states those are ok instead of the marine carb or USED to be. They sound bad ass also. IF you have the small jet pump it' wont be any slower as the pump is holding the boat back.anyways. You lose maybe 5 horse or none. It's a marine boat so dust/dirt is a non issue anyways. If you punch it from idle in deep water and hit max rpm you most probably have the small pump. Just an old hill billy who ran lots of these. Water in the oil is a chronic for 455 olds driven boats for some reason. The heads run a lot hotter than they should imo even running lake water and people run the dog crap out of them because they stay together forever at 5200-5500 or so rpm. 10 minutes flat out? Yeah they will do it without complaining although you might need to deck the heads after a season. Hope this helps and throw that dang velo stack out and steal a surge plate and the overflow tubes from a junked out marine carb and enjoy!

I know this comment is a year old but anyone running a 455 in a boat at 5000+ rpm for 10 minutes straight will learn a expensive lesson and a lot about the 455's inherent oiling issues.

I had a 17ft wrighdt stinger with a 455 Olds. It has an AA impeller in the berkeley. 80mph was 5200rpm. That engine made a hair over 500hp, was first run in my 442 street/strip car. It went 11.80s @113 at 3740lbs. About 520ish hp. That AA impeller would easily support 700+ hp and go well over 100mph

I had a business rebuilding inboard engines. The front cover on the original engine was probably removed to rebuild the pump, which comes with the ski boat manifold kit. and that SHOULD happen frequently. But the big problems ive run into with inboards, are Overheating. which means warping and cracking of heads and blocks, AND ROT! ive seen a 7.4 chevy head with a hole in the combustion chamber that you stick your pinky into. ALSO the bores rot from the outside and will break through into the cylinder. giving you the symptom you've got there. without cleaning. and derusting all the cast iron and aluminium components and pressure testing them while hot. Its almost impossible to know where the leak/leaks are..

Awesome boat! My dad has a beautiful 19 foot DayCruiser of a similar vintage (1980 model) he bought new in early 1980. 350 Chevy with a mild cam and an edelbrock carb that allows it to run on 87 octane (with the factory carb it would only tun good on premium), mercury outdrive. Its a lot of fun. I was talking to my pops about this boat and he had a suggestion: bigger oil pan with a HD oil pump and modified pickup. These Olds 455s were infamous back in the day for being oil starved in marine applications because being in a boat theyre always on an angle and these Olds big blocks HATE that and will blow up in short order if the oiling system is unmodified.
