Great video.. Your Hobo stove is similar to the way I made mine, except I left the bottom on my hobo stove.Now save that tin from that soup, wash it and smooth the inner lip made from the pop top and now you have a soup bowl to cook ramen with, cut the bottom off another coffee can or use a cookie tin lid and you can fry eggs on the stove. The beginnings of a Concrete Jungle Mess kit.. Splendid video.. I love Hobo Stoves

That was great. Took me back to my cub scout days where we made these. We kept the feed hole lid in tact, bending it up where it held a piece of bread that toasted as you cooked. We also kept one end on to cook eggs 🥚 and meat 🍖 like a frying pan. It worked but had a tendency to cook too hot and fast, but, it worked. Fun stuff. Thank you James.

Instead of leaving the bottom off, put it back in after, and it will sit on the tin opener cuts, and you don't have to make the fire on the concrete, and will leave less mess to clean up after.

James!!! Well done!!! One thing you might try is using the can opener to just open around the edge about a third of the way with the cut out in the center. Then fold the cut part of the bottom into the stove pressing it down with the pliers. That makes the stove more sturdy, while still getting the reflective heat you talked about. Also, I have a good, old fashioned "church key" as part of my EDC. It makes much cleaner vents and i used my Dremel to make a 90 degree edge on one side for striking a ferro rod. Again, great video. I always find something really useful whenever I go dumpster diving.

those cans are sealed with a epoxy type sealant to keep inside can from rusting and leaking over time, when you cook the food in a can that epoxy is leaching into the food, need a large tin coffee mug or tin soup cup , or find another can start a fire inside can to burn off the sealant then clean it out and use it to cook in

Hello James,, I've noticed in more than one video that you have cooked food right out of the canned it was packed in. There are some that wood say cooking in aluminum is not a good idea bro. great video man, would this stove work good with esbit fuel cubes also?
@myopiniondoesntmatter89588 жыл бұрын
it makes a lot of smoke because your air fuel mixture is wrong. A hotter fire will produce less smoke. to get a hotter fire give it more air. maybe suspend the lid part that you cut out about an inch up from the bottom of the can with air holes cut in it. the fuel will burn faster but less smoke.

@jelkel258 жыл бұрын
The thinking on your feet of how to achieve your end result without throwing money at the situation was fantastic. You are not cooking in aluminium, you're cooking in tin. Aluminium is only a danger if it's so hot it melts (the gasses are dangerous). The problem is many modern tin cans are lined with plastics thinly coated on the inside of the tin. As any self respecting Hill Billy will tell you, you have to burn out the plastics on the inside of the tin can before using them to cook in. If you'd just put the soup in another receptacle, then burnt out the can, job done. I don't see why people are so precious about aluminium, the main carcinogens and general toxins you would have got would have been from exhaust fumes in that alleyway, Thanks for the vid!
