just started watching your videos, I got addicted after one recommended video. I'm really impressed and happy to find new information you provide us with. As a native in New Mexico,watching the uses of cattails made me think of home. I played outside on the lake and I used to put the gel or slim from them to keep mosquito away and to stop the itching. Again thanks for the information and I'll go outside and make my boots dirty.

I had NO idea the cattails were edible! Where do you learn all of this? THis is information that is solid, needed, and so heavily ignored by modern society. Cheers to this video!

+Christina Gurrola thanks! there are so many things that cattails are used for, im going to make another video on them next Spring. well i went to the Pathfinder School in Ohio, plus i read and study the subjects of bushcraft and camping, plus im always outdoors practicing one skill or another.

This is the type of info we need to learn. I seen a video like this a couple of years ago, it may have been this one. I liked the fact that you can use the fluff to keep warm. I made a stuffed owl out of it using fabric from my son's old jeans and gave it to him.

I always wonder about eating it raw without boiling it since I would never drink the water it came from without boiling first. Thoughts? You can make descent cordage from it, too. It does shrink by about 50% after it dries though if you use fresh leaves, so better to let it dry a day or so, then soak it before you make the cordage. Last year I also made some small "mats" with it. More like hot pads..haha.

+DannyH i dont mind eatin the young shoots raw as long as i peel a few outer layers first, like an onion, tastes pretty good. good info, im gonna make a new cattail video pretty soon with some new uses pretty soon.
@luvhambo3 жыл бұрын
I know you ran out of time on this one, so here is some more to try. Earlier in the spring, you can harvest the pollen (very top of the stalk) to add to flour, etc., and the lower part (that becomes the tinder) can be boiled if you get it while green (a bit like corn). Also, try boiling the rhizome for about 30 minutes, until soft, then slice it open and scrfape out the white starch. Better than mashed potatoes. Esp. if you have salt and butter handy :). I show that on my old channel (luvhambo) if you want a demo. I love your vids.

It seems like cattails are getting choked out by an invasive species that looks like maybe sugar cane or some plant like that originally used in people's landscaping. Maybe that's just here in Colorado, but I've seen that around San Antonio as well.

I'm trying to find someone who is spouting the seeds and simply eating the sprouts, rather than cooking most of the life out of the plant. I suspect that nutritionally, seed sprouts are the best part of the plant, yet apparently they are overlooked and mostly wasted. Rumor has it that the "manna" from heaven that Moses's people received, was the knowledge to sprout their seeds, rather than make flour from them.
