Car restoration has always been my passion and in this video i show you the process of buying a used car which the owner thought had a bad head gasket. In this case, the car is an abandoned BMW e39 5 series. I then show you how to test a car for a bad head gasket including how to do a combustion gas leak test, how to do a compression test and how to do a cylinder leak down test only to find that the car doesnt have a bad head gasket. However the car does have a misfire so i then show you how to diagnose a car misfire step by step including testing the short term fuel trims and how to use smoke to find a hidden vacuum leak in car, which is the cause of the misfire. After fixing the misfire, i then show you a few Satisfying Car Restoration sneak peeks of the upcoming restoration of the car.
Here are the tools I used.

I couldn't figure out what you meant till I went to the video's page too see some more of his vids, and whoa! 1st video in 5 years? What the heck? Well I'd really like to see the follow up to this, install of all the additional parts, and cleanup. With new and even used cars so unafforable, it's imperative to maintain your older car. I drive a 2002 Mercedes with 256K miles on it, and a head gasket leak on #4 out the side of the head. What else can I do? And yeah, I could do with a whole lot of the parts he mentions in restoration.

This is something that almost no one from my close friends understand. When I tell them that I want to buy old car, such as 90s bmw, I get responses like "but do you know, that you will end up paying three times as much as you bought it for because it will sit in service every week?" or "do you know that you can use this money to buy something reliable". But that's not the way I see things, they all expect me to think that I buy an old cheap car and be surprised when it breaks down, but that's opposite I think of. I can't wait to spend my time under the car and learn how to work on it and spend time with people who share the same passion as me! This type of videos are really informative and I love that I learnt something new from them. Thank you!

Very well edited, with tons of insights and tips like the smoke test, leak tests, calculating air flow, pulling the fuel pump fuse, etc. Really appreciated the extra mile of including the pulled engine to show the head gasket, and the editing to speed up certain portions while still keeping them to make sure you show every step is appreciated (removing & replacing all 6 ignition coils). As a previous owner of a 525i (2001) I just loved this video. The greatest car I ever owned, but had to sell when I emigrated. Brilliant. What a joy to see someone who can speak clearly, hold a camera in position, focus, edit and just really plan and deliver a classy and informative product. A little poignant for me as I had a lovely E39 528i - a couple of years older than this one but maybe cleaner. Started overheating. Had a bit of work done in one garage which cured it for a while. Overheated again and I left it at another place but he could never seem to get to it. Took it back home and went through some of the steps in the video. No oil in water, no combustion gas in water. Between first garage and home the radiator, water pump, thermostat etc. were replaced. Ultimately to no avail. Suspect some (many?) head studs were pulling from the block even though no detectable intermixing of gas/fluids. Diagnosis based on fact that it would run OK until warmed up then all hell would break loose. Now, the big problem was that I had sold the house and was working in a different city. So, the dear old thing went away on the back of a truck to who knows what fate. I can still smell the leather interior and hear that straight six twin-cam growl in my mind. Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have time, tools and space aplenty to keep her on the road.

As a bimmer enthusiast (as an owner at various times an E36, E46, E90, G20 sorry about the last one), I was attracted to your channel by the "$100k-$725" caption, simply to see what you found, for the next 30:40, I never blinked. I agree with my fellow viewers that this is simply the most informative, most technically-brilliant and well-presented car restoration channel I've come across, nevermind the bs they have on network channels which disguise/rip off car "beautification" with "restoration". I know you don't even need to advertise it, but I'll defo CLS your channel. Oh, only one tiny suggestion, if you add "E39 530i" to your caption, you might increase your viewing figures substantially. I've watched many, many, many, car repair video channels, but this is by far the most impressive one that I've visited---absolutely outstanding!! Also I cannot fathom how much a dealership would have charged for all that, can you say second mortgage!!

But how many hours of work did you put in? How do you account for tools, utility cost etc? 2000$ sounds nice, but it's not a lot if you want to make a living of it.

I'll tell you what man, I had a 2000 E39 540i and I loved that thing, but the cost to repair it was so expensive! Honestly this video totally inspired me to get some tools and start working on cars. I've always found it intimidating to get started, but you break it down so easy! I might have to buy me a cheap 540 again and start to tinker with it.

Well first of all , I loved the whole video , the amount of details explained , the numbers , the tools and the knowledge hidden behind the camera ! That BMW 530 finally got the owner it deserved, or at least the attention it deserved ! Such a cool car and it was rotting away ... The way your presentation flows shows a guy that could be working in the BMW factory . I wish we were having such a car mechanic for BMW's in Cyprus:)

Wow! I really enjoy watching your video! Very informative and the way you explain things as your checking and replacing parts is so understandable. You actually educate the viewer as your explaining. Not every DIY mechanic is aware of some of the things you you've mentioned. It would have been nice to see a little more on the before and after pictures with the interior and exterior. I look forward to viewing more of your videos. 👍😎
