I Bought a $100,000 BMW for Only $725, Here's the Reality

Car restoration has always been my passion and in this video i show you the process of buying a used car which the owner thought had a bad head gasket. In this case, the car is an abandoned BMW e39 5 series. I then show you how to test a car for a bad head gasket including how to do a combustion gas leak test, how to do a compression test and how to do a cylinder leak down test only to find that the car doesnt have a bad head gasket. However the car does have a misfire so i then show you how to diagnose a car misfire step by step including testing the short term fuel trims and how to use smoke to find a hidden vacuum leak in a car, which is the cause of the misfire. After fixing the misfire, i then show you a few Satisfying Car Restoration sneak peeks of the upcoming restoration of the car.

This is something that almost no one from my close friends understand. When I tell them that I want to buy old car, such as 90s bmw, I get responses like "but do you know, that you will end up paying three times as much as you bought it for because it will sit in service every week?" or "do you know that you can use this money to buy something reliable". But that's not the way I see things, they all expect me to think that I buy an old cheap car and be surprised when it breaks down, but that's opposite I think of. I can't wait to spend my time under the car and learn how to work on it and spend time with people who share the same passion as me! This type of videos are really informative and I love that I learnt something new from them. Thank you!

​@@qmh355 I used to have in the past 25 Years several BMW E30, an E34, some older VW and so on for use in daily commuting. In fact they broke down each 1-2 Months for several reasons - Coolant / Oil / Fuel line / Tank / Brake line leaks, leaky head gasket, Clutch, Differential issues, flexible disc of the cardan shaft, Fuel pump issues, Air flow Meter issues, Sensor issues, broken rocker arm, broken handbrake cables, ignition issues (distributor or iginition coils), shock absorber, as well as the usual parts of the undercarriage like wishbone, tie rods, not to mention the axle mount rubber bearing and so on. Not counting Rust issues. In fact: If you buy an old car, you´ll have to exchange, at best immediately, all possible parts which can break down, in order to have at least peace for the next two/three years - and even that is not guaranteed. A car which is cheap and at the same time also in a good technical condition, is - very - seldom. An old, daily driven car is natually full of faults, they don´t get magically better by the time.

Well I'd really like to see the follow up to this, install of all the additional parts, and cleanup. With new and even used cars so unafforable, it's imperative to maintain your older car. I drive a 2002 Mercedes with 256K miles on it, and a head gasket leak on #4 out the side of the head. What else can I do? And yeah, I could do with a whole lot of the parts he mentions in restoration.

Brilliant. What a joy to see someone who can speak clearly, hold a camera in position, focus, edit and just really plan and deliver a classy and informative product. A little poignant for me as I had a lovely E39 528i - a couple of years older than this one but maybe cleaner. Started overheating. Had a bit of work done in one garage which cured it for a while. Overheated again and I left it at another place but he could never seem to get to it. Took it back home and went through some of the steps in the video. No oil in water, no combustion gas in water. Between first garage and home the radiator, water pump, thermostat etc. were replaced. Ultimately to no avail. Suspect some (many?) head studs were pulling from the block even though no detectable intermixing of gas/fluids. Diagnosis based on fact that it would run OK until warmed up then all hell would break loose. Now, the big problem was that I had sold the house and was working in a different city. So, the dear old thing went away on the back of a truck to who knows what fate. I can still smell the leather interior and hear that straight six twin-cam growl in my mind. Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have time, tools and space aplenty to keep her on the road.

I think the cooling system was not correctly bled in your car. Early E39 with M52 engines are quite difficult to bleed all the air out of the cooling system..

As a previous owner of a 525i (2001) I just loved this video. The greatest car I ever owned, but had to sell when I emigrated. Mine still had original battery, but perished hoses to the oil vapor recycling unit, crankcase oil seal was leaking and a pin hole leak in the radiator - not the metal part but the plastic-. Like seeing an old friend being revived.

I have a 2002 525i e39 and had a misfiring problem. I did everything you did. Replaced so many parts only to eventually find that the cause of the misfire was clogged catalytic converters. Replaced them and it's running like new now ! Wish I had seen your video before.

DIY Guy Retires from KZbin. 5 Years Later... 17M views on a DIY headlight restore video. Buys a $750 BMW and fixes it for 2 grand. Nice. Let this be a lesson boys. Never listen to the wife. If he had kept going at these videos for the last 5 years he'd have 5M subscribers and be able to quit his job and pay his mortgage f'in around in his driveway with old cars. Videos like this give me so much motivation to move to the next step. I have around 2k in an envelope from selling / flipping junk over the last year that my wife said I'm free to use to flip my first car after we move later this year. The way you explained the block contamination helped me tremendously. I do have a 2005 car that I'm at least going to start with the code reader like you did here and try to understand the interrelations between the items; maybe I'll get lucky and have a simple repair with which to start.

I'm experiencing some major 2nd hand satisfaction watching you expertly diagnose and restore one of the prettiest BMW sedans. Your animations and editing are really great too. If I were trying to show someone the ropes in fixing cars, I'd show them this video first. You cover an immense amount of automotive theory without being boring or long-winded. That DIY smoke tester blew my mind. I'll add that vapes can also be used to do a ghetto smoke test, just don't bother unless you're already addicted to it it like I was.

It is wonderful to watch someone so systematically and intelligently approach restoring this beautiful car to original condition, I am guessing that this is not the first BMW you have worked on. I was amazed to see how easy BMW designers made removing and replacing parts. I guess a quality car is expected to be maintained and kept running for a long time.

Ja servus! Bavarian resident here. When I was still an Apprentice in the early 2000s, we worked daily on several E39. It was a very, very common model. We noted days when only one model came in and E39 had the most markings on the list, followed by E46 and E36. Both latter you still can spot daily on the streets. But E39 are very rare. I see maybe one a week and I commute to work six days a week 65 km each (around 41 miles). Thank you for saving this one ☺☺
