I originally bought a Sony HR-MP5 multi-effect processor when it came out in the '90s. It broke irreparably in the early 2000s, and I've missed it since. Recently I had the opportunity to buy an HR-MP5 and HR-GP5 (the version for guitar) together as a combo deal, and was taken back in time by listening to the mesmerizing sound of the HR-MP5. Here are a few examples of the great FX of this small but cool machine.

Honestly, yeah. It's something so small and seemingly useless to add oscillator modulation, but it can do so much.

Brilliant, tired of all these dry demos which don't really show what can be achieved with keyboards. This shows how you can bring the best out in them with the use of effects.

it was analog warmth before it went through the 20 bit digital converters in the Sony...but the warble is real analog warble....I don't understand why that isn't mimicked better by the analog modelling hardware synths, it is one of the key ingredients to that sound. Maybe the softsynths are better in this respect.

I finally found a Juno 60! it was within driving distance and very affordable (as far as Juno 60's go these days at least). It was a unicorn! One owner, great shape, within driving distance to check out (posted in the local Marketplace!) and great price. The best part is he didn't sell it out from under me to a last minute higher offer! Drove to meet the guy and check out the Juno. It fired right up and made gorgeous sounds. I gave the guy my money - "Take my money now!" - and came home with a beautiful synth!

very nice, back in the day I had the choice to buy this keyboard or the Yamaha dx27, the dx was hooked up to an effects unit "microverb" I didn't know at the time until I got it home and just didn't sound the same I was gutted even phoned them back saying just sounds flat, " oh that's cos it going through an effects unit"! if only I know now and take that back to then, as it brought all the sounds to life, do now wish I got the juno60 and would be worth more than my dx27 :)

Question, I got the Sony HR-MP5 only because of this beautiful demo and I'm loving it. I recently purchased the HR-GP5 and I thought the only difference would be the mono input. I was disappointed to find out that most of the presets are totally different and most of them lean towards distortion. Do you know by any chance if it is possible to dump the presets that are on the HR-MP5 to the HR-GP5?

it was an 80s synth, the era of big studios, big budgets and big effects. this synth was made for being processed through refrigerator sized rack systems! fortunately, the expensive reverbs, delays and choruses can be done very well in software these days. juno vst's however? i'll stick with the original

Oh yea what was wrong with your original HR-MP5? When the backup battery dies the box goes crazy to the point of it not powering up, all it needs is a fresh battery and a factory re-set. Power it on while holding the BYPASS and EXIT buttons pressed at the same time.
@SynthManiaDotCom
@SynthManiaDotCom 10 жыл бұрын
Yup, I know about the battery and reset procedure, but my old unit had one of the channels on the audio converter go out and other serious circuit problems on the board, enough that the repair store said it would cost more to repair than buy another one (at least back at the time it broke several years ago).

Would you recommend this unit over current-production effects pedals? I require external effects for my DX7 and 106 live. It's difficult to tell from KZbin as harsh high-end is rolled off, but even still, this Sony doesn't seem to have the audible digital delay artifacts that I hear in virtually every Strymon Big Sky patch. The HR-MP5 sounds absolutely stunning here.

If you require deep programmability, I'd go with the Sony - if you can do with solid, good sounding effects and basic tweaks, I'd go with modern pedals

Same for me, I have firmware 1.11J and the preset are a bit different. Like the Space Phase is #55 not #58, mine is based on Serial EQ1(on)-Phase(on)-EQ2(off)-Plate(on) and if you look at Paulo's preset it's different : EQ1(on)Phase(on)-EQ2(ON)HALL(on). A dump of those presets from this older firmware version would be nice but I cannot find them anywhere.
