A five storey house emerged from there on. They used concrete blocks piled to the ground. After that a foundation was laid on them.

Why there is so much smoke?

It's the same thing that happens when you clap your hands: they heat up because of the high pressure. Junttan is exerting a much higher pressure on the poles it's "clapping". That generates lots of heat and results in all flammable matter becoming smoke eventually. They also placed a small piece of wood in between at the end, which ends up smoking too. The wood is there to dampen the last thumps I'm guessing.

Sometimes they put a piece of wood on top of the pile to prevent it from cracking. Wood usually starts to burn :)
