For some reason I feel like string beans is a bit more popular in America, the main place I hear them called that is on videos, tv, etc. Also apparently most beans these days don't have strings any more... And I almost never hear French beans, I wonder if that's also semi regional. I'm sure the french don't call them french beans, hehe.

How can _tempura_ be a sin, it's literally got heaven in it? If you don't get it: In Japanese, _tempura_ starts with the character 天 _ten_ (meaning "heaven"). Extra fun fact, apps like Google Lens are bad at blending _katakana_ with _kanji_ so you get a menu that says チーズ天 (_chīzu ten_ / cheese tempura) translated as "cheese heaven". And if you're making tempura at home following Jun's instructions, save all the little fried batter bits you scoop out! Those are called _tenkasu_ ("tempura nothing") and they're used as extra topping for tempura soba and udon, or on their own as _tanuki_ udon/soba. Why _tanuki?_ Well, they're trickster spirits, and they've become associated with slacking off at work or business owners who cut corners. Tom Nook might be one of the most famous _tanuki_ in media outside Japan - just imagine him in his little shop, selling "tempura udon" with only _tenkasu_ and you've basically got the idea!

Why is the tofu udon called kitsune udon?
@xane3767
@xane3767 8 ай бұрын
@@Orion-ih5xl The fried tofu skins in _kitsune udon_ are the same ones used as wrappings for _inari_ sushi (those tofu pouches stuffed with sushi rice). The sushi is named after the harvest deity Inari, who has foxes (the Japanese word is _kitsune_ ) as messengers! That association led to the idea that foxes love tofu, and specifically fried tofu skins, so now dishes topped with tofu skins are often called the _kitsune_ version.

Our southern tradition, as a first meal of the new year, Collard greens, which is supposed to be money, black-eyed peas which represents common sense, Pork or ham, which is considered a sign of prosperity in some cultures because pigs root forward. Cornbread, which might symbolize gold and is essential with black-eyed peas and greens. Prosperity and health to you and Rachel in the coming years.

Those beans are called green beans or string beans! I used to eat them fresh off the vine in my mom's garden when I was little. ❤ She complained that none of them ever made it inside because I'd eat them all! Sorry to be a nerd, but you said the priests ring the bells 108 times to represent sins and desires - I went "whoa, like Spiritomb!" The Pokémon Spiritomb is supposedly made from 108 souls. Nori tempura sounds AMAZING, I want to try that!

In the UK we call those French beans. I've only ever seen the green ones in the shops, however you can also get varieties with purple, yellow, or white pods, which are better for growing at home because they're easier to spot amid the leaves. They're very easy to grow.

The nori snacks will be less greasy if you fry them at a hotter temperature. They will cook faster giving them less time to absorb the oil. If you want to add vinegar, I would put it right in the batter. I would also call you wise to simply buy them, but when there's left over batter... and nori... why not?
