When you remember that a lot of the technology involved was still vacuum-tube based, you really have to hand it to the sound effects crew to be so innovative. To this day, the sound effect conveys a sense of _enormous_ power barely restrained. Still gives me chills when I hear it, and I saw the series first as a child in the 1960's.

I like your explaination, it does convey a sense of power. The bass and the thrum of the engines are just awesome. The fact that this sound was developed with 60's technology is a tribute to their creative genius.

@@tonyscates1884 I agree that it was one of the best sound effects ever. I remember I loved all the episodes with the ship where the engines were used as the best episodes just because the special effects were so cool. Star Trek engines sounds were also good, although not quite as cool, especially when they started up the Constellation in the Doomsday episode.

My favorite LIS scene will always be the first lift off of the Jupiter 2 in the first episode. That sound was awesome. The glow around the ship was neat as well. And the ship sped straight up into the sky.( Ruined by the scream of stow away spy, Dr. Smith.)

Absolutely. In this day of people (foolishly) thinking only 'digital' is good, the engines were made using a vacuum cleaner's motor, and the incredible shots of the Jupiter 2 conjoint in for a pending were done by simply rubbing the model in wires in Red Rock canyon. To this day - more them half a century later, these 'simple' effects are STILL assume of THE best

I knew I had heard this sound effect before... I was also a huge Lost in space fan. In the very first season of the Batman TV series which aired in 1966, it is in episode 2 called "Smack in the middle"... In the plot, Robin has been captured by The Riddler and the Riddler's female counterpart named Molly has been disguised as Robin... After the Riddler plans a fake car accident in which Robin... In this case Molly in disguise gets rescued by Batman, they return to the batcave. Batman reveals that he knew Molly was faking Robins appearance all the time. Molly tries to escape and goes up the ladder to the batmobiles nuclear generator... Sadly she falls to her death. The sound that the nuclear generator makes while she is on the platform is the same sound as the Jupiter 2 engines. If you watch the episode it starts at 10 minutes and 57 seconds into the video.

just a guess , but may be the sound from a diesel electric locomotive generators powering up from idle to charge the batteries. have been around a number of these type of trains and when they start throttling up and down they have almost the same sound the way it it will have that echo-ey (that's a word) noise. just the pitch is somewhat lower. gives the feeling of massive power in there. a good sound man / woman / person could probably do the edit easily. as before, just a guess...

The Porsche 917's in Steven McQueen's 1971 movie "Le Mans" have a strange, almost UFO-like quality when they're running flat out. I get the same sort of chill listening to the Jupiter 2's "atomic engine." I'm still trying to find out how this sound effect was crafted, but if I had to guess, I'd say it was a police siren and a Moog tonality mixed together and then processed using reverb, vari-speed recording, and analog mixing board EQ

Checking around, no one has of yet thoroughly nailed down _exactly_ how the sound was created. Some years back, though, I did come across a comment on fark.com. Someone had "read somewhere" that the sound originated with recording of an electric power turbine being started up, brought up to speed, then powered down. If that's what was used as a source, then the rest _could_ have involved creating more than one channel, running them through an echo-plate, mixing them in certain ways, and who knows what else.

The flying sound is pretty cool too but this is really has a kick ass feeling of power to it especially for a takeoff sequence... my question is, what did they use to make these original sounds?
