Part 1. A re-imagining of the first automated test flight of the Jupiter 2 from the original 1965 TV show "Lost in Space."
Set in the year 2097 at the Alpha Control Shipyards on Jupiter's moon, Callisto. The ship's systems are tested during a shakedown flight before the spacecraft is sent to Earth to pick up the Robinson Family a week later. The Jupiter 2 is the first in a series of ships designed to take families from Earth to the new colony planet in orbit around Alpha Centauri.
This video shows the launch, attainment of escape velocity from Callisto, the deployment of the ship's sensors and engagement of the navigational systems. Part 2 will take a look at the ship's passenger compartment and feature the most famous crew member, Robot B9.
All models, animation, original texture mapping & editing by me. Sound FX are modified from the show. Royalty-free music from AudioMicro, since FOX hates any use of their own music, even if it's fair use.... All models created entirely with 3ds MAX. Compiled with AfterEffects & Audacity. EDIT: KZbin CLAIMS THE MUSIC IS "TEXTURE" BY HEXAGRAM. THAT IS NOT TRUE. The tracks are named "Taklamakan" and "Arctic Voices." IT IS ROYALTY-FREE MUSIC from AUDIO-MICRO.
Recognition must be given to Art Creber and Robert Kinoshita, the original designers of the Jupiter 2 and the Robot, and many of the props in the show. A sincere thank you for giving us a means by which our imaginations can run free.

I’ve always loved the series, even though my mother wouldn’t let me stay up to watch it. I had to wait until it was in syndication in the 70’s, and I was a bit older. It was always my guilty pleasure that I kept to myself since everyone I knew loved Star Trek. I always wanted to be Will Robinson and have all his adventures. Many years later when I was in my early 20’s, I was working at a high end restaurant in the mid west. My employer told me one day his brother in law was coming into town, and would be coming in for dinner that night. I asked what he was in town for, and was told “some kind of convention or something”. “He was an actor when he was a child, you might have heard of him. He was on “Lost in Space”. I thought I was going to pass out. I asked “do you mean Billy Mumy?”, “yes, but he goes by Bill now”. I couldn’t believe it. After years of wanting to be this character, I was going to meet him. I not only met him, but got to know him somewhat. He was always charming, polite, and from then on, whenever he was in town, would ask for me when visiting the restaurant. It was a thrill to know him for the few years I was working for his brother in law. He was always very thoughtful, and kind to me. It’s one of the funnier things that happened in my life, and I’ll always pinch myself over it.

@@Haselius00 , I will. You've done an enormous job with the whole thing. And yes, I will keep an eye open for more. Oh yeah, it always urked me when throughout the series they would always mention "Jupiter 2" without a frame of reference. So when you put the ship on one of the moons of Jupiter, you cleared it up. Spectacular job on the recreation. I've always loved the Jupiter 2 except for its propulsion location & center of gravity, it wouldn't move forward. So in my mind I've combined the Jupiter 2 & the Flying Sub from the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea to get a more realistic space traveling machine. I still love this clip as it is though - nice.

I reconstructed and expanded the size of the Jupiter 2 about 7 years ago to something that actually made physical sense. A diameter of 98 feet made everything work out. The lower deck would work perfectly in a ship that size. And as part of the reconstruction, there was room for gravity modulators that propelled the ship laterally as you suggest. They were able to shape the propulsion field depending upon if it was in a gravity well or in interstellar space. And in interstellar space, it would make the most sense that the ship moves in the direction of its vertical axis.
@PETERJOHN101
@PETERJOHN101 2 жыл бұрын
@@Haselius00 I didn't follow the OPs objection to the ship's propulsion system. No where in the series was the Jupiter 2 powered by kinetic energy, meaning thrust. A craft powered by means of anti-gravity would have the ability to move through space regardless of its aerodynamic configuration.

Dear Haselius00: I turn 64 in July, 2021. And, l first saw Irwin Allen's "Lost in Space," all three seasons, all those decades ago, as a young boy. However, this is the first time l have viewed and heard the actual takeoff noise, and engine? emissions of the Jupiter 2 in your presentation. Man, what a beautiful craft i.e., disc, in all its glory. Did Irwin Allen know what he created with Lost in Space? Personally, l feel the takeoff noise from its propulsion engine(s)? should have been markably louder. And this includes it's emissions, if any too. For example a gross loaded F-111 at takeoff power: max.mil.power, will give you an idea of "Loud noise." I expect the same from the Jupiter 2. No less. What a gal. Keep her flying. Lastly, about 11 yeàrs ( 2009/2010 ) ago, l bought my young nephew, Joshua, my brother's younger son, he was about 7, a DVD boxed set of all three seasons of "Lost in Space." Man. And, my parting words to Joshua were: this TV Space Show will send you to the stars. Enjoy. The music to the opening credits of Season 3, in my biased, humble opinion, blast the opening theme credits of Season 1 and 2 out of this galaxy! Further than Alpha Centauri could be. This begs the question:"Why was'nt a movie made of it. I refer only to the 1960's TV show ( Not this recent jump start, retread of a movie ). Thank you. End. .

Me too. :) I may revisit this modest video. I did this on a little Lenovo laptop with limited computing power, so I had to restrict it to 640 x 480. I now have a lot more power available, so we'll see!

I would just like to say thanks to everyone who has enjoyed this video. It has now reached over 400,000 views. It is a testament to the enduring charm of the original TV show and the passion of the fans. I hope I've captured just a little bit of the fantastic design sensibilities of Robert Kinoshita (the designer of the Jupiter 2 and the mighty c57D from Forbidden Planet) I haven't posted new work in a while but there is more to come! :)

Still incredible work. Might be interesting to use NASA images and update the colors of Jupiter and its moons. Hard to believe politics has kept this show from being rebooted until Netflix's recent announcement. Watch them screw it up like JJ did to Trek. The proposed fan web series would have been more interesting.

Hi Robert designed both robots from FB and LOS but I can't find any record that he designed the C57D although he did help redesign the J2 from a single to double deck. Do you have a link to any site which says he designed the C57D - Wiki has no details - thanks

NIIIIIIIIIICE... Just the sort of perfect launch it would've been, if Dr. Smith hadn't sabotaged the mission... Very groovy vibe when the Jupiter clears Earth's atmosphere... Great job, and a favorite now.

I believe the addition of the Dr Smith character was to provide viable interest in competition with shows like Mary Tyler Moore and the Jeffersons. Comedy was much easier to sell then was complicated sci-fi.

I liked that you took the nostalgia and blended it with dynamic CGI. If they should ever 'special edition' the Lost in Space series, you proved it could be done.
