Jupiter 846R Fluglehorn (JFH 846R)

A really nice playing flugel here. The 'R' stands for 'rose brass bell', I believe (shame on Jupiter for removing online records of this model). I've been assured (by owners of this horn) that it's a .413 bore; but others, and some large online sellers, list it at .433. At any rate, either way - it's a very nice playing flugel! Enjoy! :)

I have a love/hate affair with flugels. :) This one is a surprisingly nice player, and they're affordable - when one can be found.

I just picked up a Yamaha Bobby Shew flugel mouthpiece. It plays almost like a trumpet mouthpiece. It is easy to bend notes. A very open upper register. It gives me the lighter 1970s flugel sound. Round rim. Long backbore/shank. Very comfortable.

I've had one - it was a bit big for me. Frankly though, if Bobby uses it, it's got to be good. He's a great player.

The sound is really warm…have you tried the 1100R model, I am evaluating on getting one. Nice sound though.

Jose, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. No; I've never tried the 1100R. This model was really impressive though, and can occasionally be found at ridiculously good prices. I've seen them priced well at Reverb.com a few times. I haven't tried the newest model of Jupiter's flugel either. But some day I will. :)

Nice flugel, Jonathan! Maybe you could measure the 2nd slide to find out the bore size? BTW, are all of those Adams horns new are used? I haven't seen many used for sale. Fine instruments!

They're all used, Jon. I paid too much for used, but I almost never buy new; the loss is awful. As I travel a lot, I look across most of the nation for good used instruments - particularly where I'm going to overnight with my crew. Many people will meet at my crew Hotel, and we have a nice chat in the lobby, then switch funds and horns. It can be incredibly touching. One trumpet I bought in PA was from a deceased sister; really quite touching hearing how she'd babied the trumpet and used it to teach lessons for many years (it was in very nice condition). Anyway, I enjoy it very much; more as I get older, I think. I don't have calipers though... Maybe one more thing I know to check bore size.... :)
