Of course! It was one of the biggest breakthroughs in visual effects history! Before then, dinosaurs were made by stop motion puppets like in King Kong. CGI had never been used in that fashion before. Great Mouse detective used it for the bIg ben gears and T2 used it for the liquid metal scenes, but it was never used for textured skin detail. When we first saw the brachiosaurus lumber across the screen, we were in just as much awe as Grant in seeing a real life dinosaur for the first time…

This movie is 30 years old and somehow still has the best animatronic special effects I’ve ever seen. It’s wild how far ahead of its time the movie was from a visual standpoint.
@midnightmalice4501

Practical effects don't age nearly as poorly as early CGI. Go back and watch Alien, which was almost 15 years before this, and still looked pretty good. The impressive part is the CGI, which was used for quite a few scenes. Even the T-Rex, the full body scenes are CGI and you can't immediately tell the difference. THAT is friggin impressive for 30 years ago. This movie could have been made yesterday, and the CGI would have been fairly impressive.

@@midnightmalice4501 They were also ingenious with the use of lighting to really sell the CGI in this movie, the problem with newer movies is the lighting. They are almost always too bright to really sell the CGI involved.

The fact that i cant tell sometimes which is CGI and which is not is still ridiculous to me. Thats how well made this movie is. All these years i thought when the T-rex was biting the tires it was animatronics or a real car. But no, everything on that scene is CG
@zedbee2736
@zedbee2736 Жыл бұрын
Not to mention that they were so limited by what they were using, which was an entirely new form of visual effects, that they were *incredibly* intelligent about how they worked around its limitations. Nowadays CGI is everywhere and nobody respects it, they always see it as the "paintjob" of a movie. Slap some on a bad-looking scene, boom, great movie. Except that's rarely how it actually works. Spielberg knows *exactly* how to mix CGI, lighting, and animatronics to make this movie look incredible

T-Rex escaping the fence and attacking the Car: No music. Just suspense. T-Rex returning to attack the gas jeep: No music at first, buildup with a very small amount of suspenseful music, and then the chase itself with the score going crazy. T-Rex attacks Gallimimus: No score. Just the actions speaking for itself. T-Rex attacks Raptors in Visitor Centre: Triumphant music as the Rex saves our heroes from the threat that was built up over the course of the whole movie. Every moment made perfect use of score. There either had to be a score to invoke emotion or none, to provoke a sense of awe.

One of the many, many, MANY things I love about this movie, is how much respect Ellie is given as a scientist. She's not a damsel in distress, and there are moments where her field is relevant and she takes action. Even when Ian is hitting on her, he still addresses her as 'Doctor Sattler,' acknowledging her for her brains and her expertise and not JUST her looks.
@Unethical.Dodgson

I liked her more in the book, still. She had more dialogue and some of it was just generally delivered at a better time. Not that the movie did her any injustice: She was still great in the movie.
@damotoneko1500

That's not all. That's just the respect she's given but lets acknowledge everything she gives and does. 1. She's supportive but realistic. 2. She's got a good sense of humor but also can be a voice of reason. 3. She's not shy of getting dirty as she reaches her arm into literalexcement to get to the bottom of a sick triceratops. 4. She never makes things worse, only time she causes harm the kid still survives and her actions still helped everyone in the story. 5. She's not a politicly driven sexist self insert who's got peta and women on her brain. Out of all of the jurassic movies, Sattler is the best female character period. Strong, smart, has a field of expertice, serves a purpose and is irreplacable.

I like how, if you pay attention, you can track the T-Rex's movement across the island from her first appearance until the end. It was a full-size animatronic, created by the masterful team at Stan Winston Studios, and it performed absolutely perfect on pretty much the first try. It’s crazy to think that’s it’s been over 30 years since this film came out in theaters and the visuals effects from Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and the Animatronic dinosaurs by Stan Winston still hold up 3 decades later and to think when this came out it remained one of the highest grossing films until James Cameron’s Titanic took that spot 4 years later. Here's a fun fact: When designing the sound effects of the T-Rex, they originally wanted to go with the classic lion but decided to add and mix more sounds into it to make it more fearsome and tyrannical. They use the sounds of falling redwood trees for the Rex's thundering footsteps. A bit of the aforementioned lion mixed with a crocodile bellow, a whale's blowhole for the breathing, and for its iconic roar, surprisingly, a revamp scream of a baby elephant.

What's even sadder is that in that scene he was confident he could pick himself up and regain control of the park, allowing his dream to continue, but Ellie gave him a strong reminder that he never had control in the first place and that there was no way anybody could recover from this...thus his final "Spared No Expense" is saddened because at that moment he knew definitively his dream was over.

The ‘meteor’ theory was widely accepted back then & had been since I was a kid in the early 70’s, though the ‘birds are dinosaurs’ theory was relatively new at the time & was just starting to get traction. Theories about certain species of dinosaurs traveling in herds & rearing their offspring were also pretty new at that time, at least to the general public.

Fun Fact- The full-size animatronic T-Rex had a rather amusing issue. It's "skin" soaked up water like a sponge, so in the rainy scene after a few minutes the extra weight of the water threw off balance of the mechanisms inside it's body and it would stop working. The rex was pretty clearly convinced it was not an animal, it was just investigating and figuring out what the SUV was. Its behavior is drastically different when interacting with animals. The entire main road scene is an exhibition in an animal displaying complex behavior beyond simple hunting or eating. It was exploring, creating a territory and perhaps even playing. Once it goes into attack mode it is much different. It is a credit to the movie for making the dinosaur more than a mindless killer, something later movies forgot.

The last major dinosaur movie was The Land Before Time, and there were almost no spoilers in trailers, etc. People honestly thought it was probably a kids’ movie…and brought their toddlers and elementary-aged kids to this. There was definitely screaming and crying in the theater. When Grant saw the dinosaurs for the first time, we ALL had the exact same reaction. Watching the raptors jump up on the kitchen counters at the end was horrifying. Both the novel AND the movie are excellent. The novel is actually much darker and the characters on the whole are less likeable (also, more of them die) than in the movie. The adapters of the screenplay did an EXCELLENT job removing a lot of the cynicism, lightening up some of the characters and turning it into a (still-scary) summer thrill ride of an action film! A more "true to the novel" movie, I believe, would have turned off kids and not done nearly as well. Side note: I saw this movie in the theater in my early teens and had a huge crush on Ariana Richards, who plays Lex here and is also in the film "Angus".

Also the Lysine Contingency makes no sense because L-Lysine is an amino acid that's found in meat, so carnivorous dinosaurs would easily get it by eating dinosaurs and other animals. It's only the herbavores that would have an issue and need vitamin supplements. The sick triceratops was something completely unrelated. It was eating the poisonous Lilac berries because it thought they were stones. The triceratops ate stones every 6 weeks to fill its gizzard to help it digest food. That's why they couldn't find Lilac berries in the poop, because they were sitting in the gizzard.

Girl on the left was correct, electric fences send a small shock to animals to teach them not to approach or touch, they're not meant to incapacitate like a taser is. Also, voltage does have a bearing on the effectiveness of electric items, but it's the amperage that really matters. You can have a million volts running through that fence, but if the amperage is low or not existent, wouldn't even matter... Also, as for Nedry shutting down the security systems on the island, it was meant to cover his tracks. He would leave last minute on the boat for the mainland, those still on the island would be left with no means of comms and with his hope, to be killed off by the dinosaurs.
@pedropassamani
@pedropassamani 6 ай бұрын
Nedry planned on coming back, actually. His plan was to shut down the security systems so he could get to the embryos (and cover his tracks, yes), deliver them to his contact (the guy he speaks with on that Vidnet phone) at the East Dock and then come back to the Visitors Center. He would then turn everything back on and play dumb. The 18 minute window was the amount of time he calculated as needed to deliver the embryos and come back before anyone noticed he was gone. If his plan was to just kill everyone he would've turned off the Raptor fences as well.
@thomasrodgers2291
@thomasrodgers2291 6 ай бұрын
@@pedropassamani - He did turn off the raptor fences, this was mentioned by Muldoon when they realized the raptors had escaped. His 18 min was the time it would take him to just get to the east dock, which is why he says that if he pushes it he could be there in 15. He had no intent on coming back, Nedry was not a dumb man, he would not turn the fences off with the idea of hopefully getting back before the dinos escaped, thus putting his own life in danger. If he merely wanted to deceive, and it would take him only 18 min to get to the dock and back, he could have done that all in the time he would claim a lunch break. No, Nedry definitely intended for the dinos to kill the remaining people on the island and the cover up was to protect him when InGen investigated after the fact. Nedry was selfish, cowardly, but very intelligent...
@pedropassamani
@pedropassamani 6 ай бұрын
@@thomasrodgers2291 It's not as fleshed out in the movie, I'll give you that, but it's clearly stated in the novel, by Nedry himself, that the plan was always to come back. 18 to 20 minutes (15, at minimum) to turn off the security systems, steal the embryos, get them to his contact at the East Dock and then drive back to the Control Room to turn everything back on before anyone noticed he had been gone. He was very confident his plan was going to succeed, as he had planned everything to the last detail. What he didn't know was that a tropical storm was going to ruin everything. As for the raptor fences, no, he didn't turn them off. After the "fences are failling all over the park" scene, Muldoon asks Mr. Arnold if the raptor fences are out, to which he replies "No, they're still on". Hammond even asks "Why the hell would he turn the others off?". It wasn't until they shut down the whole system, later in the movie, that the raptor fences actually went out. Nedry never planned to kill anyone, and leaving on the boat would make no sense to his plan as that would've raised a lot of suspicion on him when the staff eventually found out some embryos were missing (Nedry was part of park's skeleton crew, after all, so he wasn't supposed to leave that day). By coming back and fixing everything, he could defer the blame to any other employee who left on the boat that day, as InGen wouldn't have had any means (CCTV footage, keycard access logs, motion tracking data and so on) to hold him accountable for.
@thomasrodgers2291
@thomasrodgers2291 6 ай бұрын
@@pedropassamani - Ya, I get that the novel had this intended, but the movie script differed quite a bit and I personally don't believe it was his intent to come back in the movie. The 18 min was nowhere near enough time to make the trek to the docks and back, especially with the storm which was already in full effect by the time he began making his way to the ship. As for Muldoon, he clearly states when seeing the raptors had escaped their paddock that the system must have shut down all of the fences. I believe that early in the event, when Arnold checked the raptor fences status, it was most likely a delay, either in the system readings or a delay with the fences shutting off, but they definitely were shut off in the film. As for Nedry being discovered, there is a good chance it might not have happened. All non essential personnel were evacuated from the island and while he would be essential, it's easy to come up with a story about why he had to leave and was on the boat. As for the missing embryos, it would be a while, if ever, that they would have discovered them to be gone. Remember, the island would be filled with lose dinosaurs after this incident, it would be hard to conduct a full investigation quickly under the circumstances.

The movie is definitely catered to a more wide audience, and the books are just straight-up horrifying; the dinosaurs aren't animals, they're monsters XD (For example, you're in Nedry's perspective as he dies; you feel the fear he has as he's blinded, and the feeling of teeth crushing his head before he dies; and that's not even the most graphic thing that happens at that part 😅 Let's just say that when Grant is telling that kid what would happen to him, it's a callback to the book :])

This movie was the 1st experience I had and finding out that a script does not need to match the source material. There are people that make it in the movie that don't in the book there are people that die in the book that are alive in the movie. Those changes ended up having this movie scare the pants off me on that 1st watch. Still an excellent cinematic experience! I will add that there was information that came out on dinosaurs after the movie discounted some of the things that they said about the T. Rex but a movie is going to movie. On the positive side the movie dealt with the scale and scope of what the T. Rex should be better than the book there's action beats in the book that wouldn't make sense unless the T. Rex was significantly larger.

The special and physical effects still hold up (with some exceptions), and no movie has ever been able to replicate this film since its release, not even the sequels. And it just dawned on me that Jurassic Park released just 30 years ago. This was the first film where I got interested in the "behind the scenes" material when I bought the 'Jurassic Park - Adventure Pack' on DVD back in 2005, which contained some really cool stuff to learn about in the making of the trilogy (back when it was just 3 films). Watching the "Making of Jurassic Park" really opened my eyes to the process of what it took to make these films and the dedication and got me interested in seeing what it took to make all of this happen.

one of my favorite bits of trivia is that, much like in The Goonies with the pirate ship, the actors weren't shown the Triceratops so that when the cameras rolled, the reactions would be genuine. Also, the real Velociraptor was only about two feet tall, so it really was about the size of a turkey. While filming, scientists discovered a raptor called Utahraptor, which was much closer to the size of the Velociraptors in the film. Also, the Alan Grant in the novel was a barrel-chested man with a beard. He was modeled after paleontologist Robert Bakker. He also liked kids in the book. In the novel, Tim was like 12 and Lex was about 5 or so, and she carried around a baseball glove and ball.

Watching you guys react to this was amazing - I was 9 when Jurassic Park came out and it was HUGE - absolutely ground breaking animation, technology, special effects; everything about it was incredibly special. The raptors in the kitchen scene is one of the most terrifying scenes ever made. Seeing it in the cinema was something I'll never forget - it was packed and everyone was enthralled. Promotional material was everywhere - I remember there being newspaper pullouts of the story in the week of the release and there were dinosaur toys and everything you can imagine everywhere. It was something like I'll never experience again. Lex made such an impression on my 9 year old self that I wanted to be just like her - I thought she was the coolest thing. Now, I am also a huge fan of the books (and of Michael Crichton in general) but I didn't read the originals until I was in my teens and I was shocked at how different they are. I HIGHLY recommend reading the books - a couple of key differences in the characters are that Hammond was entirely motivated by money, a ruthless capitalist. Grant loved kids. Lex was the younger of the two kids, and Timmy was into both computers and dinosaurs. There's a lot more of the books in The Lost World, although strangely a lot of the first book and the second mashed up, and there's some really cool references to the books in the new JW trilogy as well. The Lost World book was the only sequel Crichton ever wrote, and he wrote it after the first film had been bought and planned. I really hope you go on to do all 6 films - I'm still a huge fan to this day, but nothing will ever beat the books or the first two films. And the fourth actually - as the fandom we had waited YEARS for a rumoured and oft-cancelled fourth film after the flop that was JP3, so it was such a huge moment when it came out, and seeing the park as it was meant to be in film Hammond's vision was so magical. I'm proud to say I've seen all six films in the cinema when they've been released, and if they ever did do more, I would again. Glad you guys loved it :)
