It's ironic: The T Rex's iconic reveal was large thundering footsteps, but the common criticism about the climax is how it was able to sneak up on the raptors in spite of this. In reality, a t rex no doubt was stealthy and could ambush prey. The supposed "Dues Ex Machina" of the movie is actually the most realistic.

ILM took one whole year to make 6 minutes of CGI dinosaurs for Jurassic Park. The scene where the T-Rex hunts the Jeep alone took 3 months to animate and render. Steve 'Spaz' Williams, the animator who animated most of the T-Rex shots, said it took 12 hours to render a single frame. And by the way, these people were using 30 - 60 thousand dollar Silicon Graphics workstations and expensive, high-end software, some of which specifically designed for use in Jurassic Park. ILM had excellent artists and innovators (the same people who worked on JP previously worked on Star Wars, The Abyss and Terminator 2), and it was a time when movie makers really had to impress people in order to make money.

It's crazy that some parts of the movie, I could swear it wasn't CGI, even tho it was! For example, when Rexy flips the jeep over. The tyrannosaur was obviously CGI, but the jeep also was (in the specific shot I'm talking about, of course, most of the time it was an actual jeep). Or when Lex falls off the vent thingy on the control room with the raptor, the stunt double of Ariana Richards messed the whole scene by looking up, which was quickly solved by replacing the double's face with the actress's! I admire how they used visual effects only when needed and often used practical effects instead.

I don't care that the humans and raptors somehow didn't see or hear the T-Rex coming, this scene is one of the greatest scenes in movie history: the music, the animatronics, and for a movie from the 90s, it looks a lot better than many modern day CGI fests. No ending to any other dinosaur movie can top this ending considering that it shows the T-Rex roaring in victory after killing the two raptors that were about to attack the humans. Add to the fact that the When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth banner falls down when the T-Rex roars after finishing off that second raptor makes this scene even more iconic and unforgettable.

I always use to think this ending was stupid.... but now as an adult it makes sense in a number of ways. First off, Speilberg had the ending changed to make the Rex have one final scene. He was right to do that. Second, the first raptor that died was the shed raptor which of course came in from under the plastic tarp covering the big hole from outside. The Rex probably followed it in there. Simple as that. Of course, the last raptor is "the big one," to bad the script didn't call for her raptor model to have some distinct markings but naratively it makes sense that she was the one that gave the kids the stink eye when her packmate was locked in the freezer. I guess the only thing that doesn't make as much sense is why they couldn't hear the Rex coming. But, ah well, movie magic.

The original scene involved something about a giant bone falling and crushing one of the raptors, and another being killed by Hammond, who was going to show up and shoot him. As for Tyrannosaurus, there is a deleted scene of him attacking the survivors' helicopter as they were about to escape Isla Nublar, and this scene was used in Camp Cretaceous.
