There's that, but there's also millions of years of instinct to hunt and kill let loose by man's hubris. Like, give an adorable little kitten a fake mouse to play with. The sound department knocked it out of the park when they created the calls of the dinosaurs. Blending known animals together to create something entirely new. I can hear at least two of the animals for the T-Rex clearly. One is a lion, the other, an elephant. Dilophosaurus's chittering noise was apparently a goose or swan call. Speaking of those, props to the design team for including the neck frills on the little guy. You didn't know what it was going to do, but when it opened the frill and let out that constant, angry cry, you knew Nedry was going to die. Even the worst quality scene in that movie, where Grant and the kids get caught in a CGI stampede, it's still amazing to watch.

New movies throw in music and sound effects all over the place to frighten and force a reaction. The silence makes you feel as if it could have been filmed by someone being right there. The Indominus is just an animated clusterf**k of roaring, eating people left and right with constant hero armor which just makes it a little silly. The Rex from Jurassic Park is genuinely scary because it feels like an actual unpredictable animal which have been set lose. Love it.

Spielberg is such a master storyteller. The Jurassic World directors would have added tons of music and comic relief to the scene, and in doing so breaking most of the tension. Spielberg instead chose for sounddesign (rain, the Rex footsteps, the squeaking fence etc.). The fear and impact is so much more intense. Great directors know when to use music and when not to.

@@kanahbis3236 The whole point is taking a shot at the new movies, because thats all they do. The new movies are garbage compared to the old ones, even if the dinos are nice to look at and they can roar all day long. They won't ever be able to make a movie as good as Spielberg until they remove the friendly dino nonsense and bring the fear in these dinos that people once had of them. They're not big cuddly Rexys or Raptors, they're wild beasts that would eat your face off the second they caught wind of you.

There's tons of comic relief in this scene alone, with Gennaro's comment about the power, him running away and hiding in the bathroom, and Malcolm wiping the condensation from the windshield while the kids are getting attacked. The true craftsmanship is the fact that all these comedic beats don't break the tension of the scene. I also think it's unfair to compare any of the sequels to the original. The original is lighting in a bottle, one of the greatest movies ever made. Comparing any movie to that is unfair and an unrealistic standard for any movie to have put on it.

Everything about this scene is perfect, from the sound design to the practical effects to the logic of how the T-Rex is behaving as an animal---curiously bumping the jeep and then attacking once it identifies prey. Even the lack of music is a win, making the scene so much more suspenseful. 10/10

The fact that they don't close the car door immediately after the driver leaves is very unrealistic though. It feels too staged to set up the tension. Also initial calmness/ lack of concern from the other guys while watching the kids getting attacked is a bit odd. I'd have more fear in my eyes even when frozen. They looked like men watching a tense rugby match. Then the scene where Jeff runs with the flare awkwardly transitions to the trex going for the dude in the loo, making it seem like Jeff led him there? Which would not make sense. Would have made sense to throw the flare. Great scene but not perfect

Yeah, that's something I don't like about the direction the newer movies have taken. In Jurassic Park 1 - 3 the dinosaurs were treated as though they were ancient wild animals brought to the present day through the magic of science. The newer movies try to paint them as genetic freak show monsters unlike anything that would have actually lived 65 million years ago. I mean, I get why they did it, we have learned so much more about what dinosaurs were in the past nearly 30 years since this movie came out and the best way to justify it was to say that these weren't actually dinosaurs but Frankenstein esque monsters with genetic anomalies. Still though, I miss the dinosaurs being handled like they were actual animals with real animal behavior and instinct and not psychopathic blood thirsty monsters.

One of the greatest scenes in film history. The fact that the T-Rex still looks far more real & convincing than the CGI sh!t in the latest release in the franchise is truly astonishing. @@ASDAPOI there is still quite a lot of cgi in this scene, most notably whenever the t-rex is shown walking, because the insane animatronic t-rex they built could not walk. in my opinion there are two reasons the jurassic park cgi looks so much more realistic than the cgi in most other movies. first, the events portrayed using cgi are not particularly unrealistic or over the top, so it doesn't take much to convince you they are real. the t-rex pushes the car over (which takes multiple pushes) and bites off a tire. if this movie came out today the t-rex would pick up the entire car in it's mouth as one piece and throw it 1000 feet into the air, where it would fly in slow motion for 30 seconds before hitting a tree and exploding into a giant fireball. no matter how good the effects are, action like that is going to look unrealistic because the events themselves are unrealistic! this scene contains much more suspense and waiting than blatant chaotic action for the sake of it. the second reason the cgi in this feels so realistic is that every other aspect of the movie works to sell the idea that the cgi events are real. the acting, sound design, and integration between cgi and real elements are all extremely well done and all work together to convince you that the cgi elements are real. most newer movies that have action for the sake of it do not effectively use these other elements to convince you of the effects.

Growing up in the 90s, I watched all sorts of horror movies. We had Freddy, Jason, chucky, etc. none of those scared me as a kid, I thought they were stupid to be honest. What DID scare me… this scene. I remember having such vivid nightmares that dinosaurs are still out there and they want to eat me. I also had nightmares that I was on the titanic 😅😅😅😅

I can imagine... it unnerved me but it didn't exactly scare me much. The attitude I take toward most of the dinosaurs in these films is they're not monsters in the fullest sense of the word, just animals doing what they think they need to do to survive. The only ones that are truly monsters are the ones humans engineered to be that way.

30 years later and this scene still sends chills up my spine. I'm convinced this may be in the top 10 movie scenes of all time. The tension is creates is almost miraculous, the special effects hold up today, and creates the sense of pure terror of an giant predator bearing down on you. Absolute lightening in a bottle.

it literally took me years to realize that when Lex shines the light into the Rex's eyes, the pupil shrinks. Such amazing attention to detail.

Also it's basically come out since then that Rexes probably had one of the best eyesights for an animal maybe ever. The part of their brain that did vision was huge compared to many animals. Many paleontologists have watched this and said a Rex would have no issue seeing any of them even with no movement. Still a great scene though.
