I think one thing with Thorin is that he really insists on people sticking to the rules and if they don't then it irritates him greatly. So in his mind Monte didn't stick to the rule of picking a great movie that everyone (i.e. adults) can enjoy. Also, since he has Aspergers I think his way of talking and addressing someone when he is a bit heated can come off as more aggressive and blunt than what you'd normally expect in that social setting. The girl being able to bring the park back online at the end of the movie was foreshadowed when her brother was making fun of her for being a computer nerd / hacker during the scene when they are walking together with Grant just before he discovers the eggs. The real problem with the computer scene is that Hammond who doesn't know much about computers says "shutting down the system" will erase everything that Dennis did. It doesn't make sense that Arnold who knows computers would agree with this because a complete reset of the system wouldn't support the scene of finding a file at the end that can magically reboot the entire system. If it was a true reset then everything down to its last byte would have been completely wiped including all systems both good and bad. On the other hand if it works the way the movie showed, then the bad stuff Dennis did should also come back as it was directly part of the system they are trying to restore. The supporting evidence is when the system was rebooted it even brought back his useless wallpaper for crying out loud. Dennis being underpaid was a problem, but the movie only shows that he is underpaid from his perspective. The real issue is that Hammond implied that Dennis had caused a costly mistake and wants him to pay for it. This is shown when they have their "financial debate", but no numbers are stated nor do they discuss what mistake he caused. The only thing we get from this is he made a mistake and now he owes Hammond a lot of money for it because he expects people to "pay for their mistakes". Thorin and Richard are right about the kids. Can't defend kids doing dumb stuff in movies because that's just going to happen. Mentioning the "Lysine Contingency Plan" and not immediately putting it into effect knowing peoples lives are at risk has got to be the worst thing ever in this movie. Even if it takes time to work or doesn't work as expected, Hammond should have done it considering the severity of the situation. I don't care if he has been there for the birth of every dinosaur on the island, his own grand kids are in mortal danger and he won't even pull the trigger to give them a fighting chance. Also his grand kids tackle him when they first meet and he falls down and doesn't sustain any injuries as an old man. 🤣

Awesome episode guys. I think one important theme that Monte tried to hit but I feel Richard and Thorin undervalued was the contrast between Ian and Hammond. Thorin and Richard suggested Hammond was inadequately vilified since he was portrayed as the jovial grandfather, while Ian was the eccentric, kinda gross sleazy scientist. I believe this was actually one of the better motifs in the film. John was the unrealistic, Icarus, corporate entrepreneur who looked great on the outside, checked all the boxes, literally wore white, but who actually ended up causing numerous deaths and tanked a groundbreaking scientific discovery due to his own hubris and greed. While Ian, dressed in black, gross, nerdy, obnoxious, doesn’t say the right things and is outwardly unlikeable, is the one who actually is accurate/right about the dangers of the project. The movie made me think of Billy Budd some in terms of placing the actual good guy as the objectionable appearing one to contrast the actual bad guy who looks like the angel, and making the audience mistrust their own intuitive views of morality. Their contrast also reminded me of some of the literature on corporate deception like on PT Barnum, into corporate advertising starting post-World War II. Appearances can fool you. That’s what a good capitalist entrepreneur does-they know what sells and they put themselves squarely in that mold. But Ian, the rogue scientist, is not concerned with the surface, with appearances, but only with the truth. So he’s seen poorly, condemned, like Socrates, because he’s objectionable, albeit right, in favor of the salesman. But in the end, the truth prevails over the facade. It’s a strong trope that has a foundation in critical theory literature on consumer/corporate capitalist society. Granted the delivery wasn’t great, and there wasn’t depth that explored the concepts to any great length, but the mere fact that a blockbuster movie introduced these concepts to a mass audience is impressive alone. It’s no masterpiece, but I agree with Monte that there’s more to this movie than meets the eye.

Ripping hearts out, freaking out from all the insects and traps, flayed flesh, human torture, voodoo (in India).. it goes on and on. But at the end, the hero still defeats the bad guys, saves the child slaves, gets the artifact back to the people it belongs to, and doesn't quite kiss the girl at the end. Sure, you have to fast forward the raft scene. After that the movie is fire.

I watched the movie and its sequel a few months back and I really do not understand why this movie is still well regarded by people who have rewatched it as adults. Although the premise of the movie is intriguing and the cinematography and world building are great, the characters in this movie act consistently illogically and stupidly up to a point that it becomes frustrating to watch. In combination with the fact that most tense situations are predominantly caused or exacerbated by either the characters themselves or random dinosaurs that pop up in locations which make no sense at all, it made it impossible for me to suspend my disbelief. I absolutely despised the way the women and especially the girl acted in scary scenes, especially with the girl (and sometimes Laura Durn, or Ellie) screaming all the time at the top of her lungs, often in situations that didn't really make any sense. I don't think I've ever seen a movie before where there's this much excessively loud screaming. I also thought the woman was badly written in general, from how they acted to the things they said. The way the female characters were written annoyed my girlfriend as well. The scene where the girl is hiding in a jeep from a t rex with her brother and she grabs a torch light and starts waving it around while screaming, after being told that a t rex can't see you if you remain still (and quiet), was the especially frustrating to watch. The sequel is a much worse movie, so I recommend not checking that out if you didn't enjoy this one. Its even an even more nonsensical movie, but then without all the elements of part 1 that were good: the island, varying dinosaurs and world building.

@@ziggle5000 Yes, as a matter of fact it is. 2023 Gröna Lund, fatality and nine injured in by partially derailed train. 2003 Disneyland, one fatality and 10 injuries at Disneyland after cars separated and derailed. 2004 Disneyland, three injuries after lazy safety procedures and trains collided. 2021 Top Thrill, several bolts were dislodged and a flag plate hit someone in the head, causing traumatic brain injury. 2023 Fury 325, a guest spotted a steel support pillar completely cracked and shifting around as the train went by, luckily preventing an accident. 2003 Steel Dragon 2000, a wheel came loose, causing someone to suffer a heavy back injury and another guest was hit by the wheel. 2021 El Toro, a train partially derailed but all riders could exit safely. 2022 it malfunctioned again, causing 14 injuries and an operator claimed that the cause was the previous issue that was repeatedly reported but never fixed. All of them some major, fixed roller coasters and huge attractions that I came across. Nothing but the tip of the iceberg. Many, many more fatalities. Note that many accidents that occurred during operation with guests but didn't result in injuries or deaths could very well have. And most injuries could've been fatalities. It was just random luck. Just logically speaking, it's completely impossible for something like a roller coaster to be 100% safe. There is always a margin of error and a risk the operators/parks are willing to take. It would be ridiculous to assume that they don't calculate how much they can make with a roller coaster compared to the potential damages they have to make up for because of accidents. You don't spend millions to build one of those things without doing that kind of math. Hell, even essentials like traffic lights are subject to cost-benefit analysis that assign a monetary value to human life and then calculate if more value in life is saved by a precaution or action than those cost. This is just fundamentally how these investments work.

Richard, The Fabelmans is an incredibly good film. Spielberg's best in ages.

Tintin was a pretty great movie too.

Don't think I've ever heard Thorin get into Monte before as he did in this. Fully with Monte though. The lads are overreaching a lot for their takes on it.

lets be real WE ARE ALL HERE FOR THE THORIN RAGE - why complain about it. The PASSION, regardless of how it may resonate with us, it is mega compelling and thought provoking. Take that over milk toast takes forever and always.

I agree with all 3 of you but lean more on Thorin's (And Richard) side as someone first time. the argument that its made for kids is one I've heard made for live action Disney remake is contradictory since Monte as an adult enjoyed the movie even though it can't explore its themes since its black and white, it wasn't even a science error but fat one so there was a theme and plot mismatch. I should've just ended the movie at the Triceratops which I didn't get to see again, I thought it would come to save them. I finally know why what looks to be a pile of dirt meme is called shit now XD. as a " defense" xD - The T-rex showing up is cool factor and is a cycle- he was trying to eat them and now he saves them. At first he was supporting Malcolm now its supporting Hammond.
