A playthrough of Ocean's 1993 action-adventure/first-person shooter for the Super Nintendo, Jurassic Park.
When the game came out, I remember looking at reviews and photos thinking it looked sweet. It was probably in part because the movie was like the most hyped thing ever, and it was amazing (at least so I thought as a kid - those special effects back then were pretty revolutionary), but it still looked good as a game. Doom+Zelda+dinosaurs? I mean duh, that's an obvious win.
When we rented it, I was amazed. It looks choppy and lame now, but the 3D levels were kind of terrifying back then, and just the fact that they were 3D really made them a big deal. I never made it very far in the few times playing it: I got so lost in those indoor levels! But, I had a good time with it anyway. It was an incredibly difficult game, and it still makes me grind my teeth in unhealthy ways.
It's kind of neat to reflect on now, but as an adult playing it again almost 25 years later, I'm thoroughly unimpressed with it. Maybe I should've just not gone back to Jurassic Park..
Haha, it's not that it's bad. The mechanics are solid enough, and the 2D graphics still look reasonably good. The soundtrack is as good as I had remembered, though I never understood why it so randomly shifted to just ambient noise or another song as I'm getting into the jungle music :)
The place that the game suffers the most is in the 3D levels. They impressed at the time, but today they border on unplayable. I spent hours mapping out these stages before doing a final recorded run of it, and I still had a hard time with it. The frame rate seems to always be in the single digits, so turning feels like driving a Mack truck, and since so many rooms look identical, it takes about two seconds to get lost. And these levels get massive - the biggest has five floors. No wonder I never got anywhere as a kid. I suppose I have much more patience now.
It was a great game for its time, but for how modern it was, it has aged less gracefully than even Donatella Versace. If you don't know her, look her up. A picture really is worth a thousand words.
Looking at it now is fun through nostalgic eyes, but if you have fond memories of it, don't go back and play it again. I assure you, disillusionment won't be far behind. It's better than many of Ocean's style-over-substance titles at the time, but this one had a lot of potential to become a classic. So many of the elements were there. But they never came together properly, I'm guessing because the thought of flashy money-maker shots on the box won over the guys in charge.
The other huge disappointment is the ending. I mean, seriously?! You made a game this hard, and the ending is just about identical to the intro? Mode 7 isn't that cool, guys - what a kick in the teeth after making it through the gauntlet.
Jurassic Park was just soooo cool when I was 11, but in hindsight it tripped over its feet for how it soooo wanted to do things that it could never properly hope to do. The SNES wasn't a Ferrari. Hell, it wasn't even a Corolla. It was a Skoda with a nice paint job. The devs set their sights a bit too high, for sure.
I did get a kick out of the random Kenner logo on the Visitor Center, though. I'd totally forgotten about that one. It was also shown in the ending of the NES Jurassic Park, which is a significantly better game than this one, despite everyone's belief (mine included) at the time that the SNES was unquestionably the version to get.

As a kid I put literal YEARS into beating this game. It was my childhood nemisis. Considering the scope of this game, and how much effort went into it and everything, I was convinced that the end was going to be EPIC. So, for years I toiled away at this game. Exploring absolutely everything. Finding all the keycards, the eggs, all the secrets. Nights only illuminated by the glow of my CRT. My child brain trying to stay brave in the 3D sections. Imagine my fucking disappointment when the end sequence was just the intro in reverse followed by "Congrats". I think that night I literally vomited with rage. I'm pretty sure I shit my pants in protest.

Given how much this game takes its inspiration more from the book and not the movie it could've been a lot worse. The movie ends after the survivors escape in the helicopter, but in the book the survivors (Alan, Ellie, Tim, Alex, Robert, Donald, and Dr. Harding,) are all detained by the Costa Rican government and informed that they're not going home any time soon, the Costa Rican Air Force completely destroyed the island with napalm to eliminate the dinos, and that an unknown pack of animals have been moving around in the Costa Rican jungles eating farmers' crops and chickens which hints that some dinos had successfully escaped and reached the mainland.

I would play this over and over and over every single time I went to my grandpa’s house. I could never beat it because the game was never able to save somehow even though it DID have a save function. So at the end of everyday I would get closer and closer to beating the game but my mom would come pick me up and the second it was turned off all the progress was lost. Every. Single. Time. 😂 I still never beat it to this day yet it will always be one of my favorite games

You missed out on nothing. You just waste half an hour running around looking for eggs. Seriously, what were they thinking? You don't even get to fight the T-rex. One of the worst games ever released on Super NES because it was mind numbingly boring. I frequently shut the game off after an hour because it bored me so much. Even a plain racing game on Super NES was more fun than this.

Back in 1995, my parents got me this game for Christmas. They knew how much I loved Jurassic Park and dinosaurs, and I was so excited when I opened this up Christmas morning. The game started off fun enough - until I had to go inside one of the buildings and got lost and found out you couldn't complete missions out of order and had no idea what to do. I thought maybe it was just my dumb kid brain, but after watching this walkthrough, I'm still lost. All those rooms in all those buildings (and the boat, apparently) look the same and there's no map to help guide you and no way of knowing where you've been. Thank you for uploading this walkthrough. It was still really cool to see the game played to completion and finally get closure seeing that incredibly anti-climatic ending. I still have this SNES game, and I'd say I might play it again someday, but knowing there's no way to save my progress means I'd have to be in it for the long haul, and I just don't have the time. Still, nostalgia overload right here.

I have to say, I don't know how I beat the game originally, unless I sat with a guide pulled up on my computer or something, a lot of this seems really random; how is anyone to guess WHERE to gain security level 1 or 2, OR to be near the bottom of the ship to call for the helicopter, especially when the last task is to plant the nerve gas in the raptor nest..... only to THEN high-tail it back to the ship? There's some logic to it if you remember that the dinosaurs cost a completely CRAZY amount of money to create. Trying to catch the adults running loose is a fools errand, obviously. But if you were absolutely desperate not to lose your entire investment you could still try running off with any eggs. Of course what the game doesn't implement is angry parents/packs guarding said eggs. Which you absolutely would have to get past IRL.

How awesome would a properly done open world Jurassic Park game be? And I mean an open world least the size of The Witcher 3 and its expansions. Either set between Jurassic Park 3 and Jurassic World on Isla Nublar or sometime after Lost World: JUrassic Park on Isla Sorna.

This brings back a good memory. I got this as a present and on that day my mom, dad and I played it literally for over 10 hours straight. We still didn't beat it and I'm shocked it can be neat In 2 hours. I loved the music even though it's some of the creepiest music ever.

I, too, was excited for this game. Screw nes and the Genesis versions, this is THE Jurassic Park game. And when I first played it, I loved it! Then..... Something happened. You can't save your progress. No passwords. I've been playing for three hours and I can't even stop. Ugh. I did beat the game in like five hours. It wasn't easy. The ending sucked.

There was an infinite ammo exploit in this game that I discovered. All you need to do is find a floor where ammo can be found, ride the elevator either up or down and go back to the floor where the ammo is. The ammo will always respawn and you can hoard as much as you want.

I used to play this game a long time ago back in the late 90's and early 2000's when I was very little. Being so young, I had no idea what to do to win the game. I just wandered around just to see the dinosaurs. I used to think the Velociraptors were T-Rexes. Speaking of which, I never found the T-Rex until recently I found out that you have to go to the area where there's a white letter "E" on the grass. I don't know what the "E" stands for, but that's where you go to see the T-Rex.
