A quick test animation of my T. rex model in a Jurassic Park environment, inspired by a shot from the 1993 movie.
Rendered in cycles, took about 2 1/2 days to render in total. Scene setup & animation took about a day. Was a fun experimenting with procedurals and particles in a way I don't usually to create the rain and foliage effects.

Hi all, The response to this video has been fantastic and I'm a bit overwhelmed by all your comments! Obviously there are a lot of issues with this (including the rex not looking wet enough), but it was a quick test more than anything that I knocked out in an evening and then left to render for a few days while I was at work - so I never expected it would get this amount of attention! I'm working on more videos like this and hopefully getting some more tutorial-like content out there. I have some issues with using screencapture while I'm working which I'm not sure how to resolve quite yet, but hopefully I can get something out at some point. So stay tuned as I'm really hoping to do more blender/VFX/film experiments in the near future! Thanks again, Ben

Dude, the video has 15K views. That's nothing. It deserves millions! I even think it deserves to be in the news. Because you're just 1 talented guy and by using an amazing and free software. You managed to create a Hollywood caliber sci-fi scene in one day from your bedroom. That's an amazing story if I have ever heard one! Sorry If I'm a bit too excited, but this is just amazing to me. And I just discovered you. I'm just thinking about all the possibilities. Subed!

Let's not get hyperbolic. Night time scenes are always forgiving with regards to CGI. Which is why the CGI in the '93 movie T-Rex attack looks super realistic and when you get up close with the Raptors in the kitchen the effects look very dated.

@Solid Snake When the Rex steps into the road, when it walks between the cars and then eats Gennaro were all CGI. Nigh time is extremely flattering for CGI.

I think what makes this work is that you nailed the lighting. So often bad cgi looks bad because people light it flatly. But you not only lit it in an interesting way, you lit it like Spielberg would’ve done it. Well done.

Amazing work, mate! It took ILM to create entire technologies and work with the CG and practical FX pioneers of the time, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to get a shot that was almost mirrored by one person in 2019 in a free software probably somewhere in a bedroom on a desktop PC, shows just how far we've come! I think the grade actually helped a ton in tying the scene up to look like the original! One criticism would be something the original actually exploited and that would be actually making the dinosaur look wet from all the rain!
@amitrana2756

@jeffh where did I say it comes close to ILM's work *these days* ? I'm not stupid to admit something like that, neither would be the actual artist who made this here. I said the result here came close to the look in the original movie that came out over *25 years ago* . You're essentially saying we're not in 1993 yet, which is an objectively ignorant thing to say and there was no reason to turn this into a "LoL acKtuAlLy lEt Me TeLl U Y u'Re WrOnG bLenDer KiDdIe" software war by ignoring what the entire intention of my comment was, which was to simply illustrate just how far we've come as an industry from ILM who started this revolution with Jurassic Park to CG being truly democratic today and how anyone could recreate the blockbuster hits of the era in their desktop PCs today which is true and being demonstrated everywhere. I thought the blender community was supposed to be this dense when it came to software acceptance, but no, it can come from everywhere apparently, even when unprovoked. :/

@BenJewer
@BenJewer 4 жыл бұрын
@@RW_CreativeMedia Crocodilians are a bit of an exception when it comes to teeth because they're so specialised and spend so much time underwater. Most animals have their teeth covered by lips to protect the enamel, including all large lizards alive today. There's arguments for and against dinosaurs having lips but I think it seems more likely that they did. Here is a good article about it: www.skeletaldrawing.com/home/the-lip-post1
@BenJewer
@BenJewer 4 жыл бұрын
@@RW_CreativeMedia Even at the time JP was made, scientists knew Velociraptor looked nothing like the movie. Maniraptorans (inc. Velociraptor) have been known to have had feathers since the late 70s, and the real Velociraptor was the size of a turkey. The dinosaurs in JP were already outdated at the time scientifically speaking, but they were still much further ahead than any other depictions in mainstream media. While a lot of things about dinosaurs will never be known, quite a few species (especially Tyrannosaurus) are known very well from almost complete remains, and a lot can be deduced (not guessed) about them from that.

Absolutely amazing. Now one critique that you should take into consideration to make this perfect. The rain. That t-rex should be glossy with rain. Not only was the dark rain used for the optimal believability in the old days of cgi but give tribute to the constant difficulties of shooting with the animatronic t-rex who had to be dried out between takes because he weighed the hydrolics down so badly he would shake. Also, the fact that the t-rex is dry looking, it removes him from the enviroment. However, it is incredible what you did.

The original Jurassic Park scene actually used both a practical full-sized animatronic T-Rex, as well as a 3D animated version. In at least one shot in the original movie scene, the T-Rex is practical at the beginning of the shot, and CG as it walks away by the end of the shot.

LOL I mean really pulled it off, many have tried, but not like this, I could've swore this was the original work. The very Best representation I've ever seen, and I loved the original. So This is what Ian Hubert meant when he said at his conference "this is what happens when you just keep going and it's never finished". Brilliant, Absolutely Brilliant. What would it take to get some water physics pouring off his big scary head? Stan Winston still made animatronics, right along side the VFX. That's how they got that big sucker to get the shot of water running off his back was using the actual model in that long shot after this one. I don't know, Id call I.L.M. if I were you Ben.
