Astonishing how this film, made 22 years ago, contains the most brilliant pieces of CGI I've ever seen in cinema. Yes, even in today's movies. It holds up flawlessly, because it's just so damn real. Well done.
@jakecroc8 жыл бұрын
+Agostini Couldn't agree more, that's why I think it's a mistake that they're not using mixtures anymore, no more motorized dinos, which used to be used to fool the naked eye. Now, all they use is CGI, It's getting the point where it can't catch it breath.
@SargonTheGrape8 жыл бұрын
+Agostini It's not the CGI that's better. In scenes where the dinosaurs are standing in broad daylight (such as the very end), the CGI looks really bad by today's standards. T. Rex was able to look good because most of its scenes were not well-lit, and obscured were by rain. These two things serve to hide the flaws in the CGI, and the scene was shot like it was for precisely this reason. They also hid the flaws by swapping in animatronics for many of the close-ups. Rexy looks like she's eating the goat because the animatronic is really doing that; Rexy looks like she's attacking the car because the animatronic's head is physically performing that action.
@jkrfan78 жыл бұрын
I still have trouble trying I figure out which is cgi and which is the robot
@SargonTheGrape8 жыл бұрын
It's pretty obvious. If you can see the whole dinosaur, it's CGI, and hidden by rain and darkness to hide the flaws. If it's an animatronic, it tends to be much better lit, and you only see small bits of the dinosaur.

Not just that. The whole filming process was 'real' as in the T-Rex model was a full sized version made out of steel frame and hardened plastic etc. If this thing failed and crashed on the actors at some point (when bashing through the roof window, for example), then the kids would have been dead. Also, the bite force of the 'puppet' must have been strong enough to kill a human by size alone. Filming these scenes must have been thrilling on another level. This scene was actually the first time I noticed the use of music in a movie. It is the best reveal of a movie monster ever, in my opinion. And no other depiction of a T-Rex seems right without that iconic roar. If a T-Rex roars, thenplease like the JP one ;).

Classic Spielberg. He knew how to create scary monster movies. Just watch Jaws again and you will still be scared of going in the water despite this being made 41 years ago. And guess what? The shark hardly appeared during that movie because it kept on malfunctioning, but Spielberg managed to create a masterpiece that stood the test of time. It's a lesson to all the other filmmakers out there that you can't rely on CGI crap to cover up a shitty story like we saw with Jurassic World. I saw Jurassic World once and will never watch it again. With Jurassic Park, I can watch it over and over and over and never get bored with it.

The CGI quality of the T-Rex breaking out when rain is falling and covering its skin makes it look even more real. That scene got so much detail and awe, so many movies today fail at conveying these emotions. The only time I was similarly caught up in a movie was the Balrog reveal in FoTR.

For all the praise it gets, I don't think Jurassic World had moments nearly as tense as this one. When I first saw this as a kid, I was legitimately freaked out; I had no idea what was going to happen next. Everything about this scene is just terrific. It's stretched out over a fair amount of time, so the tension just keeps building in you. The setting is great too; it's a dark and stormy night, so it's hard for us to see the terror. This, combined with the fact that cars can't move, makes the situation that much more precarious for the characters. Last, the fact that there's no music in this scene adds a sense of realism to it that just makes the fear we feel as an audience that much more palpable. Spielberg is a master of suspense. I didn't get as nearly as tense while watching Jurassic World. With Jurassic World, I knew exactly when the jump scares were going to happen, and there were very little scenes like this with no music. Furthermore, it was bright and sunny for about two-thirds of the movie, which took away any gravitas the scenes could have had. It was still an entertaining movie with interesting characters, but I don't think it had moments that were nearly as suspenseful as this one.

***** are you kidding? Can you even put both screens right next to each other and really give an honest opinion or are you just making this stuff up as you go along? They used the same exact techniques on JW as they did in JP. This film is just ingrained into your head as the better one because you grew up loving it. I believe this film is far superior not because of the effects, but because of the team that came together to make it. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, you had Phil Tippet, Stam Winston, Michael Crichton who wrote it, Steve Spielberg, and a cast assembled that didn't star big names to attract people, however the visuals (if you put each film next to eachother, and compare the CGI details) are far superior in JW. JP just was way ahead of it's time.

Hollywood forgets that the combination of CGI and actual effects (animatronics/puppetry/props) with proper usage of lighting allows scenes like this to feel very real. My brain automatically allows me to be convinced that this creature has weight and solidity when it interacts with the environment (mud/fence/trees). Then the CGI is used to give it natural movement as it leaves it's enclosure which is barely noticeable as both the animatronics and CGI blend together very well. Unfortunately Jurassic World doesn't seem to go into that sort of detail.

If there's anything I love about the Jurassic Park franchise, it has to be how realistic the dinosaurs sounded as well as how real they looked, the T-Rex was no exception. In the other older dinosaur films that came before JP they seem to rip off Godzilla roars, but hearing the blend of the growl of an Alligator, the trumpet of a baby Elephant and roar of a Tiger mixed together makes you really believe that you are listening to the roar of the King of the Tyrant lizards that lived 65 million years ago

This scene is the equivalent to in Jaws when Brody says, "you're gonna need a bigger boat" and the shark is shown in all its glory for the first time. It's amazing how 20 year old cgi can age so well. JP still looks better than several cg movies around today. And I don't just say this as some kind of ultra fan, I mean it. I mean look at this and then compare it to, say, the crappy transformers movies. This looks more real. Sure, some shots here and there look dated (the brachiosaurus early in the movie definitely shows its age, probably because it's in daylight rather than darkness like this scene), but overall it's aged ridiculously well.

I am an ultra fan it was the first film i seen in the cinema. i was scared shitless.... My earliest memory is of this film. Anyway back to the topic the 2 best cgi films were IMO JP and Terminator 2, they were a nice mix of cgi and actual stunts. Somewhere in and around the time of the matrix films became not worth watching, may as well stay at home and play the cpu. Like the new planet of the apes and transformers films, the stars are cpu effects

I loved the detail that was put in to Jurassic Park. Spielberg was smart to have incorporated animatronics for his close-up shots and sparingly used CGI when we needed to see the dinosaurs at wide shots. Spielberg knew the technological limitations it would bring because CGI wouldn't have been convincing if he simply did all CGI with this movie. I remember being a kid watching this and thinking the dinosaurs were so convincing that I was convinced there were still dinosaurs. While I am an adult now and let go of all childish things, I watched this a few days ago and still can't help but to think how the visuals still stand up.

I saw on the extended DVD how it took weeks for a guy to figure out how to do the cup O water scene.....Spielberg got the idea from listening to a rock band in a car loudly...and seeing the water react to the vibrations. On the day before this scene....the finally got an idea. When a stage hand put a glass of water on a guitar and plucked a sting....they got the perfect vibration. So they put a thick piano wire taunt on the bottom of the car......plunked it.....and the rest is history!

@Xainfinen9 жыл бұрын
+TheColonelAngel What you need to know is that most CGI always look better with the cover of rain, fog and darkness that's why most monster movie have scene filmed in these condition. If you find an old movie with better CGI than actual movies its certainly because of a combination of animatronics, stop motion, lighting & weather effect. Todays CGI are good enough to let the monster be seen in daylight but its still had flaws, the production time is also a factor, the less time the production team have to do the CGI the less realistic it will be.

If this scene was made today I'm afraid that they would have tried to make it look as visual stunning as possible in terms of explosions a la Michael Bay. That's what I loved about the new Godzilla film which used the same techniques as in this film. To build suspense and to create an atmosphere by waiting a long time before revealing the monster, never show the monster too much just as at 0:57. And only to use action/destruction sequences where the characters we care about are involved in the scene. It's a shame that too many people didn't like the new Godzilla film. It's the best "monster" film since Jurassic Park (1993).

Travis Webb The new Jurassic park movie will have a genetically modified super dinosaur, which technically can be described as a monster. This in order to attract more people to the theme park. This sounded ridiculous to me at first, but it's something that was in the original novel Jurassic Park.

Most of the dinosaurs have been genetically modified in order to complete their genomes, which could explain the movie's small, venomous Dilophosaurs and the oversized velociraptors.

The scene where the T-Rex breaks out of its paddock never gets old. The snapping wires, sounds of bending metal, the movements and sounds of the T-Rex, along with the rain and darkness are just the pinnacle of movie making. It ties the scene together perfectly. I also like how they didn't make the T-Rex act non realistic like attacking the cars first, or going after Donald Gennaro after he ran into the restroom (of which it saw from inside the paddock). It was only until it was attracted by movement and the flashlight that it began to go after the children.

For the record this is not all CGI, they used some impressive animitronic work here too. Infact the combo made the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park look far more real than most CGI constructs in movies today, such as the Hobbit movies, where the Orcs were made mostly by Computer, they stick out and look almost cartoony beside the Actors or even the environment sometimes. Everyone probably also remembers the Original Lord of the Rings Trillogy where the Orcs were actually actors in makeup and suits, with only a small helping hand from the computer to make them look even more realistic.

It's not the CGi artists. There's a bigger pool of them than ever that know physics and physiology inside out. They don't get to make the choices that made the difference. (Limiting the number of effects shots to only using it when absolutely required, choices of lighting, space, to hide flaws and maximise the illusion, knowing when to use animatronics, maximising location & set shooting over green screens, having the eye for composition, movement and editing of Steven Spielberg etc)
