In honor of one of my top 3 movies of all time, here's a tribute to John Williams on Jurassic Park's 30th anniversary.
I challenged myself to recreate this score using only guitars. The rules? No synthesizers - only hand-played instruments. No limit to number of tracks.
The results are as follows:
Horns: Nick's Custom Tele
Woodwinds: Epiphone ES-335
Strings: Gretsch Tennessee Rose
Cello: Hofner 500/1 "Mersey" / Gretsch Tennessee Rose
Piano: Epiphone ES-335 (Neck Pickup)
What I discovered is that by playing all these parts individuals, it can create an almost...vintage electronics feel? Sort of like video game music, for lack of better phrasing. Each "section" has at least 3 "chairs" played individually. I think the absurd number of guitar layers is what creates this almost "glassy" sound.
I should also add that I do not read sheet music, so this was arranged by ear. I listened to several versions of the orchestrated version along with some MIDI scores to figure it out and arrange the parts for guitar. Some octaves needed adjusting, but I tried my best to keep it faithful to Williams' original orchestral scoring.
Don't credit me for creativity, it's John Williams' absolutely genius arrangement. Tons of unresolved notes, adding lots of tension. Thumping low end (dino stomps?). A gut-wrenching modulation to Ab in emotional moments. Individual parts that sound entirely wrong when isolated somehow fit effortlessly within the overall structure. I have no idea how he does it! This song is literally almost just I-IV-V in Bb and somehow it sounds entirely unique, permanently etched into the brains of an entire generation.
