Stravinsky was our master. This work is perfect from start to finish. You can hear shades of Tchaikovsky if you listen carefully.

Interesting performance. I have noticed before (Agon, Mariinsky Orch) that Russian orchestras have a real hard time getting into the idiom of Stravinsky's post-thirties, American works. They keep trying to bend it back to its Russian roots, whereas I.S. wanted it dry and clipped. You can hear the way the horns want to go Swan Lake.

Все ругают так называемые неоклассические произведения Стравинского. По моему этот балет прекрасен. Его мог написать почти кто угодно. Это было бы по силам Прокофьеву или Равелю( музыка мелодичная и красивая) . Местами ощущается экономия оркестра , но он всё равно не звучит бедно из за достаточного тембрального разнообразия. Недооценненная работа.

The harp is supposed to sound like a lute. It does not.

what makes you think so? Stravinsky composed Orpheus almost measure for measure to suit Balanchine's requirements. The ballet features a huge lyre prop. The harp is as it were making the sounds Orpheus is making on the lyre.

Stravinsky was a pretty good orchestrator so......I think he probably knew what he was doing....but thanks though.

@@johnrandolph6121 Stravinsky was a great orchestrator. In the score, at the beginning and end, the harpist is asked to play 'prez de la table' - close to the sounding board - imitating the sound of a lute. It's close, but still does not sound like a lute.
