These recordings were made for a radio transmission at the studios of the Dutch public broadcasting association AVRO (Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep or General Association of Radio Broadcasting) Hilversum, Holland on 8th June 1939 with the Hilversum Radio Orchestra conducted by Frieder Weissmann.
Jussi was then 28 years old and six months earlier had made a sensational debut at the Metropolitan and, just a month before, at Covent Garden when he was described in the press as "the second Caruso" and "one of the greatest singers of our time".
