One of my cell mates was a schizophrenic black guy, in and out of jail and mental hospitals his whole life, homeless, came in high on meth, with the same charges he always gets, possession and trespassing, I was in with relatively little record because I tried following state law that had just changed allowing people on probation to get medical marijuana, my po didn’t even know about the new law, nor cared enough to even look, had me locked up. I was there longer for trying to follow the law while white than my black cell mate was for committing the same crimes over and over again. Just one example but I could give more. People who file false claims of hate crimes should serve the same sentence a person would get if there had actually been a hate crime. These hoaxes are damaging to the community and to the country that is already highly violative and partisan. Most importantly these hoaxes damage true victims of crimes either by making them hesitant to come forward or by making the community skeptical from the start. There needs to be a stand taken after far, far too many of these nonsense hoaxes have been allowed to go unpunished.
