Hi so when you Made your top upon her discussion in the video she did not mention her way of getting the number to bust and waist she did mention dividing the shoulder line in to 2 which gave her an answer of number 10 being her measurement came out to be 20 so do you divide the bust and waist aswell in to 2?
@amakerwitch
@amakerwitch 2 жыл бұрын
@@caramelrose7187 If I’m understanding the question correctly, then no - if you measure all the way around your waist and bust then you’ll divide that measurement by 4 to get the length of those lines on the pattern - since the pattern essentially represents 1/4 of the whole garment. Since the shoulder measurement is taken only across the back (and not all the way around the shoulders), you only divide that by 2 to get the length of the shoulder line.

You wanted to know what holds me back. To be brutally honest, I'm a curvy woman but all my curves seem to be in the wrong places and fitting seems to be impossible. For example, I love this shirt you make in this video but I know that when I make it, it won't fit me because I have a bulge right under the bust that makes everything look funny. I don't know how to work around it. I don't "just have a spare tire", I have two of them. I have another one below the waist. I usually wear a tunic length which is easy enough but I find that even with that, making things to fit all this odd shapes just doesn't work. I'd love to figure out how to fit around all the rounds!

My Grandmother used to sew clothes from patterns she made herself, for her children. I remember her telling me her process and that my Aunt, after going on to college would send pages from magazines and ask her to sew her a dress(es). This was in the 20s, 30s and 40s, I don't how easy or difficult that would have been for her. I just know how awesome I thought my Grandma was for being able to do that. So I really appreciate videos like this, that helps others learn to do the same thing. My Grandma had no one to teach her these things. She learned by trial and error. So again, a great big THANK YOU!!😊

I have always love simple summer patterns with the grown on sleeve, but never found one that, as a large busted girl, that fit me no matter how I adjusted (fba or otherwise.) Well, after watching your video yesterday, Alisa, I got out my drafting supplies and some cotton lawn I had in my stash and....voila! I ended up with a great summer top! I opted for the slit in the neckline but used a coordinating self-made bias tape. Uh oh...you might have started something here....I'm now on my third version!!!!

Just made this and it turned out so well!! Thank you!! To those that aren’t sure about how to do the sleeves and hem- For sleeves, fold under 1/4”, press fold again and press then topstich. Basically same for bottom hem except fold under more if you have allowed more seam allowance. For the neck: I made bias tape by cutting 1.5” strips, sewed the bias tape to neckline right sides together, fold back over incasing the rough edge and then topstich along the very edge of neckline from right side. Bias tape has natural give it it and shapes around curves nicely! Thanks again and hope my tips help someone out there! Next step for me is to figure out how to do the slit in front 😊

Your mini-series is the best beginner friendly introduction to pattern drafting that I have found. (It's partly due to your enthusiasm and bright smile.) I am ready to take the plunge and attempt my first self-drafted garment. What holds me back? Ending up with something that doesn't fit. I guess that can happen with a professional pattern so its just a matter of confidence in my own skills. Anyway, thank you for your videos and making the world a happier place.
@ThoughtfulCreativity

Jane, hello there! Thank you so much for a kind comment! To answer your question about the fit of the garment, and maybe a few tips here as well - 1) start with simple things (like this top), it will build your confidence and you ill start naturally understanding what goes where fit wise 2) your best tool is already in front of you - and that's your body, so measure, measure and measure. If not sure - measure. For example for this top, you have to make sure that your shoulder length of the final garment is couple of inches longer than hip/bust 1/2 measurement - that's because those couple of inches will account for the ease of the garment to make sure it fits and you can actually get into it 3) make a muslin. Now I can draft and cut right into the fabric, but at first - always a muslin, that will take away the fear of making mistakes and disappointment of not working out. Once you have your muslin, let's say need shorter sleeves - mark it with the sharpie in front of the mirror and then transfer it onto the pattern. Again, that will give you an understanding of what really fits you and what kind of fit/silhouette you want to achieve! 4) reuse the same pattern time and time again - it will build up the confidence and you will get better every time you make a variation of the same basic thing! I hope this helps! Whew.... a long one!

I used to be afraid that I would screw up and waste the fabric if I attempted to draft my own pattern. Then I was cutting out expensive fabric from an expensive trouser pattern when it hit me: because I'm tall and long-waisted, I was making so many adjustments to the pattern that it was easier to line up a pair of trousers that fit me well on top of that pattern. Deciding to simply draw up patterns on computer paper for pants and various lengths of shorts instead of wasting money on ill-fitting patterns was was from there. Now, I do take the time to make a muslin mock up first when I'm making something dramatically different for the first time snd/or I dig through my old patterns and refer to them when drafting a new pattern. So, long answer made short to your question about what held me back: the irrational fear that my own stupidity/incompetence would lead to wasted time and money (after all, huge companies like Vogue and Simplicity must employ "better" sewists than me!).

answering your question: what holds me back is my body! Our family is plagued by "the tube" body, more commonly known as a rectangle body. Almost all of the girls have these HUGE waists and no hips or butt. When I was young and slim, my measurements were just about all the same (bust, waist, hips). Now old and fat and wanting to wear more than t-shirts and sweats, I have tried to make my own clothes but they are a joke and makes me feel horrible about my REAL body. I would like more videos on how to fit my REAL body and what style different body shapes should target to feel their best. For example, like in this video and the hem where you have it a tad longer and curved in the back. The top is adorable on your body, but how will it fit on my "tube" body, lol. If you gave advice (using this video as an example), "Now if you are a "tube" or "pear" shape, you might want to make the hem line longer (or shorter). Or, the shape of the side straighter (or curvier), or the neckline wider if you're a pear..." etc.. Am I making any sense? lol. I just want to make my own clothes but my 40, 39, 39 body makes it a horrifying endeavor every time because buying a pattern and trying to adjust it is a ridiculous task. PS - I LOVE this video and that I found you and will be attempting this pattern today! So, thank you for making it....very clear and concise.

I think the thing that causes me anxiety about drafting my own patterns is that my measurements never really look like the examples. I am 6’ tall (23.5” nape to tailbone) with a 39.5” bust, 37” wast and a 44” high hip measurements. This makes my patterns look a little bit different.
@DebbieHQ
@DebbieHQ 3 жыл бұрын
It's OK to be different. Only the 'hourglass' pure shape of a figure will be like the cute girl on the video. Draw your pattern by your own measurements, cut it out, and hold it up against you. You'll see, it's the right pattern for you! There is no pattern that will fit you perfectly out of the package, as they're made to fit an 'average' of bust, waist, hip, height measures...and very few are truly average. We're usually above average women! :) If you hold it up, you can modify before cutting any fabric. If I'm unsure, I usually will make a muslin (super cheap fabric that really doesn't matter and will be either knit for knit top or a woven for a woven top). It's helpful, and you can adjust a portion if needed. Try it! You can do it!

Ive benn drafting from existing clothes. I get stuck on facings vs rolled hem vs binding. And adding enough fabric for darts and placates. I love the double sharpie trick...so much easier!

I love this tutorial! I have been looking in the stores for a pattern just like this (woven tee-shirt-type) for such a long time. The patterns are $19 to $20, and I usually only want to make 1 or 2 pieces. Add the price of the fabric, and sewing becomes an expensive hobby! I know the answer is drafting my own patterns, and I know I will want to learn variations on the basic pattern. What has been holding me back is the actual drafting. Let's just say geometry was a nightmare in high school. I also think some creators go way too fast, like they can do it so everyone else should be able to keep up. I'd like to know which tools are essential and which are optional. I'd also like easy patterns like this so I can feel a sense of accomplishment when I succeed. As basic as it is, I would like to know how to measure and draft both an A-line skirt and a basic rectangle skirt. I keep getting the length and width measurements mixed up. It seems every tutorial I have watched just says mark and cut but doesn't say how the fabric should be positioned before the cut and etc. Sorry this is so long! Thanks again for a great tutorial. I am going to give it a try! I would also like to know how to draft facings for the neckline and arms. I don't especially like using bias tape.

Lisa, until you are super sure of your skills - keep old bedsheets and use them to pack the first quick "try" garment, if something isn't right or needs to be adjusted - adjust the pattern and cut from the good fabric! Big name designers and tailors do it all the time!

Lisa, I used to feel just like you do and then I realized that there are a lot of differently sized people around me if something I sew is nicely made but does not fit me to well there is bound to be someone who will fit into it. Now people who have received simple items from me frequently give me fabric etc when they come across it because they know I will do something with it.

If you're still taking comments as requested in the vid... I'm rather large in the bust and keep getting the impression that I can't get away from dart-making and complicated measurements. So that's the major issue I have with attempting to draft my own patterns. Heh. Thanks for your tutorials, they have been pretty inspiring.
@DebbieHQ
@DebbieHQ 3 жыл бұрын
You certainly can, you just have to understand you will have some wrinkles under the arm pointing towards bust. And if without darts, your top is too short in front, you may need to add a little additional length to the front to account for the amount your bust will take up. Try it with a cheap fabric. You'll be able to see what I"m talking about. The dart just makes the back and front come out even. And not so protruding at the bottom as a larger bust may cause.

Again a very clear tutorial! I watch your channel a lot and learn so many things and patterns! For your question: I ruined the fabric a view time: I messure. Draw cut out and assemble the garment. Then it just doesn't fit as I thought it would. I make adjustments and ... Grrr. I undo the the adjustments or put some other ones in. And at the end I spend a whole day ending up looking for a purpose for the scraps I have left. But to say: that also happens with pdf patterns I buy . I have this strange body. LOL
@suzykeene9298
@suzykeene9298 4 жыл бұрын
Some people's bodies are more asymmetrical than others, and large busts, long torso, bigger bellies etc can affect the pattern. It's well worth making a customised dress form and creating a toile, ie version in poplin first which you can cut and add in pieces to create a new pattern

I'm going to try this! One question: how does this work without darts? Is it just the amount of added ease?
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity 4 жыл бұрын
Denise - that's exactly right! The couple of inches that I was talking about, that your shoulder length should be bigger than your largest measurement (hips or bust) will account for that ease so that you don't need darts. If you have a very large difference between hips and bust - to make it more fitted - take each true measurement, add 2", put in on a pattern and when you draw a line from the armpit to the bottom - curve it in to create a more fitted silhouette.

I think self drafting patterns works best when you're working with a very column like figure like you have, so no big differences between the high bust, bust and hips, no large stomach and buttocks. The more curvy you become the harder it gets to just whip something up, especially if you're a beginner. I am really curvy and I never just sew something up before doing at least one muslin first. If I make something for my sister who has the more ideal proportions, I know I can usually just go straight from block to sewing.
